The vote to table Schumer's amendment was 53-47 party line. What if Collins, Romney and Murkowski bucked party line? That would leave Schumer's amendment 50-50. While today they held, I could easily see these 3 bucking the party line on a vote sometime during this circus.

Who breaks the tie? The VP normally does but impeachment trial is unique and the VP is not the presiding officer. The constitution names the Chief Justice the presiding officer but doesn't explicitly give him a tiebreaking vote power.

If I were McConnell I'd have Pence on standby if this becomes an issue as if Pence is not there, the Chief Justice is the only other logical person to break the tie

By the way, Romney decided to stop being a dumb*** because polls showed he dropped 18 points in support since coming out in favor of witnesses.
