Would Boise join the WAC?
I'm sure most have seen the Boise and MWC thing from yesterday, so if they were to go Indy, would they join the WAC? I don't see them doing it, since they wanted the Big West over the WAC years ago. The WAC would take them, but I don't see them leaving the MWC no matter what

RE: Would Boise join the WAC?
While I’m not sure the WAC is in any position to be picky, BSU is NOT a good conference mate. That said, what if they were to open up the coffers for BSU and maybe BYU to come into the conference. Not sure what BYU is making for their oly sports, but I would look at what the WAC could do. Not sure we even have a television deal, so renegotiating a deal may not be a show stopper.

No way BYU joins the WAC. That ship has sailed.

RE: Would Boise join the WAC?
Maybe, but things can change over time. Look at what BYU has been able to do with their football tv deal. IF, and again, this may be far fetched I get it, but IF the WAC were willing and able to facilitate a mass exodus (BSU, SDSU, AFA, CSU, etc) for teams to go Indy in football and have a landing spot for OLY sports we may be able to change the equation a bit. IF those teams believe they can do better negotiating deals on their own, if could work. Not all of them would do it, but what if two did?

Again, it saying it will happen just thinking outside the box. It’s up to the WAC schools to decide if they are willing (or able) to swim in that pool.

Yep, this thread is pretty stupid. Boise State would never return to the WAC.

Well, BYU going Indy in football and going to the WCC was out of left field and predicted by exactly no one. Stranger things have happened.

BYU was trying to make a deal with Benson to move its Olympic sports to the WAC before the MWC Commissioner Thompson was alerted of the backroom deal between BYU and the WAC. The Fresno State, Nevada, and Hawaii Administrations worked against Benson to barter their own deal to join the MWC; all but nixing any interest by BYU to join the WAC. Refusing to stay in the MWC and given no other choice but the WCC, BYU went to them looking for a new home. All this was because of Utah's move to the PAC-12. BYU also felt it was necessary to leave the MWC to prosper. The MWC was strapped with a bad TV deal. So, BYU wanted the ability to market its' own football program to generate more revenue and keep pace with Utah.

RE: Would Boise join the WAC?
Agree with Pistol. At the time Benson almost pulled it off. IF Boise wanted to go the Indy route, how is it any different than when BYU did it? I’m not sure the WCC has any intention of expanding their footprint at all (much less with a.
non-faith based school) and the Big West isn’t any better than the WAC competition wise.

Boise coming back to the WAC is a long shot, I agree. That said, assuming the WCC doesn’t want to expand its footprint, what other options are there? If the WCC is willing to expand outside their footprint or religious affiliations, then I agree that all bets are off.

It’s different in at least 2 ways. One, the WAC was just about on par with the MW at the time. Two, the WCC is actually a good fit for BYU with their academics and faith based leanings. The WAC stinks now and BS is not a fit for the WCC. This is a silly thread.

It's silly to think Boise State would ever consider moving its' Olympic sports to the WAC. "IF" Boise State was serious about leaving the MWC to go independent in football, they would be looking eastward for a new home; to house their Olympic sports... possibly the Summit League but that would even be a stretch in thinking.

What if it were more than just Boise leaving the MWC?

Just stirring up conversation, so let’s not go too overboard on the silly thread thing. I would put Boise coming to the WAC at 1% at best. I just don’t believe in settling for status quo.

I will say, this is where settling for D2 moveups hurt any chance of growing with actual D1 teams.

RE: Would Boise join the WAC?
In the hypothetical scenario where Boise State left the MWC for a football only membership in the AAC, yes the logical conference would be the WAC. The Big West does not want Boise State. Back in 2012, to join the Big West, Boise State was going to have to pay a $2.5 million entry fee and a $750,000 travel subsidy annually.

The WAC will be less expensive and has baseball. Boise State is bringing back baseball this year and they will need a home for that, meaning the Big Sky is out. The WCC is not going to happen. I doubt Boise State leaves the MWC, but if they did it could be good for the WAC.

I continue to be amazed that people think NMSU and the WAC haven’t talked to D1 schools about a possible move to the WAC. Only folks on this board have had that idea? It’s even sillier to think that everyone wants out of the WAC, it’s completely unstable and yet we can somehow convince D1 schools to leave a stable conference to come to an unstable one of no names. It can all be true. The WAC is always looking for new members, D1 or D2. WAC members would leave in a minute for a better, more stable league. If one is available. But in some ways, the WAC has become more stable. CBU, Dixie State, Tarleton State are not going anywhere. Same with GCU, UVU, UTRGV and Seattle. Chicago State continues to survive. Where is NMSU going? The conference has achieved some stability by the fact that their teams just don’t have anywhere else to go.

I would agree that the WAC is not going to attract a Boise St. What is attracting Boise St. is an AAC football only invite. They would, in turn, have to park their OLY sports somewhere since the AAC is on record as saying they aren’t interested in a full sports membership from BSU. The WAC idea is only IF they were to try to move their football to the AAC.

Hasn't the AAC already came out in the past and said BSU would only ever be a football only option for them? Also the Big Sky isn't and option b/c BSU has baseball again. So their options like we all know are WCC/BW/WAC. BSU doesn't really fit any of these leagues.

Unless I read it wrong (entirely possible), I read where the AAC said they would only consider BSU for football only. Couple that with the fact the MWC has already said it won’t accept OLY only, the options are limited. That said, I still put the likeliness of this happening as really low. I just feel that the WAC leadership owes it to the constituents to kick the tires on this (which I would guess they already are doing).
