no Monken thread....lmmfao...
I'm pretty certain it was someone on this board that called me a FK'N IDIOT thinkin' he would be fired after the season (comment was mid-season going into their weak schedule)....

I'm also still confident, had he stayed for year 4, thingys would be a tad diffy for todd....

talk about wasting an op to make bank.....

disclaimer: I'd have jumped on him STAT if I was AD!

Considering he is an OC (instead of HC somewhere), he may be available for hire once we crash and burn next year. Sure, would prob be a pay cut, but one can wish.

Would we really want to hire a guy who left us a week before signing day? I’d say he’s burnt that bridge.

I agree...I'm almost certain he wouldn't come back if offered (which I don't believe would happen either)....

I just like talking smack about where I believe he would be today if he would've chosen to stay for year 4....IMO, he would be HC at a major making 4.5mm/yr...

I easily believe both sides would be in a better position today had he stayed....

he went after the dough......it's tough to argue against 'bird in the hand' vs. having to deal with the leadership in place at the time and our fickle fan base....

there weren't many that had faith in him those first two years.....yeah, I remember all the bs I absorbed defending him over that time frame...

that one is plausible as a rehire....he was on the 'ins' with the car dealers and most fans....I could see fedhat going after another high profile job via the southern miss chow train....

unfortunately, like Bennett, it appears we're stuck with hop-A-long for another year at this point....

I can't fault Monken... Wasn't like he was out there interviewing or showing interest, an opportunity fell into his lap and it was his dream job. Hate it didn't pan out, but I'd welcome him back. He was a class act as a coach minus the leaving, but again I don't fault him.

I would be tickled mauve if our current head coach would leave tomorrow to go be a secondary coach for more $$$ sonewhere else. Maybe his alma mater will scoop him up.

RE: no Monken thread....lmmfao...
We are stuck with Hopson. It sucks, but that is where we’re at. The administration likes Hopson a lot... they know he isn’t going to leave, he runs a clean program, and he can manage to scrounge up 7 wins usually.

The administration does not care if we regularly win C-USA. They do not care if we make it in the top 25. They only care about the financial bottom line and running a clean program. They showed this when they hired Hopson. There were so many better candidates to help us be more competitive. But they knew they could pay Hopson peanuts (in comparison to other coaches) and he wouldn’t leave.

We might can afford to get rid of Hopson, but we don’t have enough money to hire a new coach.

This is the reality of Southern Miss in the new decade. C-USA is a disaster. Southern Miss is now an also-ran in the race to be in a bigger and better conference. Doom and gloom... I know... but it is reality.

With how many long term season ticket holders I hear are dropping, I don’t think he’ll be back after next year.

True. We’re not even going to be able to pay Hopson if we can’t sell any tickets.

That bowl game is gonna end up hurting ticket sales more than 0-12 did. At least people knew 0-12 wouldn’t stand and things were gonna change the next season. We just gave up 30 unanswered points to Tulane and can only expect more of the same. Nobody wants to pay to watch this crap.

not just 30 unanswered points but going 0-3 down the stretch when we controlled our own destiny - losing by an average score of 31-13

It's even worse than that...

not just 30 unanswered points to a 6-6 Tulane team but going 0-3 down the stretch when we controlled our own destiny - losing by an average score of 31-13

Monken making $1.1 Mill as OC at Ga.
B. Faulkner took a pay cut to go to Ga ($250k as OC to $150k at Ga).
Fedora to Baylor as OC (prob $750k or so but maybe on the cheap if on UNCs payroll).

We still have Flopson for $500k

Hopson is simultaneously one of the lowest paid and the most overpaid head coach in the country.

CUSA TV money isn't there. Ticket sales aren't there due to non familiar matchups. The hoops profile isn't good enough to win you an at large bid.

...why not Indy again? Call up the AAC West and set some series together so that the fans have the matchups against Memphis and Houston back. Fill gaps with Tulane, SMU, and ECU.

Sell some road SEC games and use the money to buy 1 or 2 wins. The cash difference outstrips the CUSA media deal... ...so why not? USM can be back to 9-3 under the right circumstances. Your AD needs to use the leverage he has and get creative....

I think you overestimate how many teams want to schedule a series with us, especially in the middle of conference season. There’d also be no bowl tie ins and we’d have to find another conference for other sports.
