Could not be more impressed with the way the team played. Tough defense, diving for balls, battling on the boards, great movement on offense including picks, backdoor cuts and mixed in some zone.

Our young team went toe to toe with a senior laden team that was picked to win the CAA.

Hofstra lives at the FT line, but we actually took more FT's, 14 to 10
UNCW with only 8 TO's to 14 for Hofstra.
UNCW with 9 steals to 3
UNCW 34-32 rebounds
UNCW 12 Off Rebs to 8
UNCW 12 second chance pts. to 8

All this with very little press.

Struggling from the 3 point line still. Gadsden is just not the deadly shooter from 3 he was last year.

Not to mention, when he interviews you know what he wants, you know what he expects, you know what he's trying to do. Night and day...night and day. We're going to win some CAA games. Bookit. And I was sure we weren't going to win another CAA game under McGrath. He's my kind of coach.

He was fired up and with good positive energy. Let's see how we continue to evolve though. The defensive rotations from the guards to get steals right at the rim were good as was the ball pressure for the most part although we did start off the half a bit flat on both ends. Our offense still needs more work with player and ball movement, but the defense was good for the most part. Overall, we looked better tonight and he did a good job motivating the team.

What we did tonight, that has not happened under McGrath, is we answered their runs. They got up 10 in the first half on a 9-0 run, and we responded with a 8-0 run. They opened the second half on an 11-2 run and went from down 4 to up 5, and we responded with a 5-0 run tie the game. After that, they never got up by more than 4. We have been allowing 2 or 3 of those runs each half. They were missing shots because our defense was stellar, while we were missing wide open shots. If we could have knocked some of those down, we'd have left with the W with that defense.

RE: Rob Burke
We had a few good looks that didn't go in, but we did struggle to get what I call good looks. Sims had a clean look for a change and didn't convert but it was a good shot. Jaylen needs to get his weight more forward on his FT right now. He got too vertical and he's far too good a shooter to miss from the line. Get that butt out a bit more son (weight more towards toes not heels) and it's back to $.

Key turning point to me was when we were up 3 and didn't get the ball inbounded then they hit a 3 to tie it up. We could have really put some serious game pressure on them there. Ty had made a nice drive too just before that and it would have been great for him to have gotten to the FT line but they called it on the floor. Tough break right there.

They have to build on this performance if they can. Sometimes it's about matchups too. The Pride isn't that huge down low so we matched up well. Hopefully the Hawks can match up against the Huskies who you know will have some serious size. They tend to have that it seems. The Hawks do have serious quicks with their guards though so they may have a shot.

RE: Rob Burke
I watched Coach Burke and all the player post game interviews today.

Really solid stuff. All the things already said about him I agree with. I'm just not ready to "live in the moment" and say yeah, he's our guy. That's not a knock against him, that's a knock against the last 2.5 years. I know the counter argument, maaaybe McGrath never listened to him etc, etc. We don't know.

Either way, the same way I gave McGrath a pass for 2.5 years before voicing any true criticisms... I want to give Coach Burke some time here. One close game against Hofstra, a team that we've consistently competed well against during the McGrath era, is NOT enough for me to say or believe this was all some master plan to out McGrath and crown the prince.

Could we get there? I'm not going to rule it out. Again, I really liked listening to him (I never enjoyed listening to McGrath, he bored me). I like his energy, his off the cuff statements about the players, taking care of them, getting them ready, and finding a way to compete for a championship THIS year. It's all very nice to hear. I wish him the best of luck, and will say if he can keep this up... it wouldn't disappoint me to see him rewarded.

Another question I'd love for a reporter either from the school or the Star News to ask is what type of player he is looking for to fill the two remaining (3 if you count the scholarship we gave a walk-on) scholarships? He mentioned those during the press conference, and it annoys me because there was such easy follow up there on the lead he dropped. "What type of player would YOU look for to fill those scholarships? What positions do YOU see as the most pressing need on the floor to fill those scholarships?" Questions targeted and tailored to HIM vs "the program", would be incredibly telling on if he should be given that HC vacancy interview.

Could he really answer that question about filling spots? That will be the decision of the new HC. Unless you are asking him hypothetically

That was the point of framing the question towards him and his opinion. You use words such as "would..." "if you could..." vs "are you..." or "have you..."

Word framing is of utmost importance and is always dependent on the type of answer or information your attempting to gather.

That's not a question he should answering in a post game presser. He needs to be worried about what he can control... That's the next 2 months. If he gets an interview, he can tell Jimmy what his plan is for the open scholarships.

While it would be great for us to know what he would fill those openings with, it's most important for him to let Bass know. And I'm thinking, if nothing else, he should definitely be on the list of candidates. He has an advantage over the other candidates. He can show first hand to Bass what abilities he has to turn this program around. It's only been one game, but I was impressed with what I saw with such a short time to implement anything.

RE: Rob Burke
I don't think the question really needed to be asked. He said we have some "holes" to fill. If we all know that means some bigs, i'm pretty sure he does to. As bad as McGrath was as a coach, and as big a mistake as it was he didn't recruit some bigs, I think even he knows how big a mistake that was sitting as home watching FloSports now.

However, i'm pretty confident I know the type of players he would recruit. He actually sounds more like a football coach than a basketball coach. I 'm pretty sure his checklist would include toughness and a physical build to play that brand of basketball. I mentioned that our team looks like a soccer team to me. If he were our coach, I doubt I could say that in four years.

No offense to soccer players....

McGrath was gone at the end of the season no matter what. I don't think there was a master plan to crown Burke. But, if there wasn't someone on the staff they thought could be a future candidate for the HC spot, it probably wouldn't have made sense to fire McGrath midseason. That's a big risk to take if you don't see the possibilty of turning the season around with an assistant. If the team continued to fail, the fallout would have been the same as if McGrath had stayed. The players would be demoralized and we'd probably see transfers whether it was McGrath or an equallly bad assistant.

I just think Jimmy saw something in Burke that made him believe he could make a huge change to this team and was willing to give him the keys to see what he was made of. And if he was right, we could potentially have our next guy in place. The upside is player retention and really good recruiting material that he turned a failing program around midseason, with the same players McGrath had. And those players would be your best recruting tool for recruits. It would also be an ideal situation to keep the whole staff, make Burke the HC, and bring on Blizzard as director of operations.

Lots of upside with little downside to bring on Burke at this time.

This is fair and I don't disagree. There's a lot of positive in retainment with him.

There's always the chance that the next HC could be NONE of the candidates we've discussed here so far and may be completely off our radar. Such was the case with Coach Keatts. He didn't really hit our radar until whispers were happening that we were in serious talks with a top assistant from a team in the Final Four. Prior to that, nobody had mentioned his name on the boards as a candidate.

I do like Burke's style though, a lot. So it's definitely a very nice and welcomed change of pace for all of us as fans, IMO.

Exactly my thoughts on this. I imagine we'll be casting a pretty wide net. We can't afford to get this hire wrong and ultimately spend about a decade wandering in the desert.

Agree with both of you. But man, if Burke turned out to be the real deal, it would be a best case scenario for UNCW basketball. Proven coach at UNCW with players who will be here awhile. Proven style of play against CAA competition. Defensive oriented style that works at the mid major level. Potential handoff to one of his assistants. Not to mention, if we did retain him it means he did a remarkable job and turned this season around.

We can dream, can't we? Plus, I like the guy.....04-cheers

Yeah I’m with you. Add on to that, he’s a lifelong North Carolina (state not school) guy and there’s be hope that he would want to stay put and build a long lasting program/legend.
