UConn has P5 expenses on a “G5” (FIFY) budget since we are the only school in this conference to win a national title (multiple ones) in a revenue sport in the last 60 years that doesn’t have an asterisk attached to it. We have dumped tons of money on facilities and, unlike Memphis being neatly tucked into the center of this conference, almost every game for us in a cash burning flight of 1200-1700 miles. Mike Aresco even complained about his travel to conference schools from Providence. So, it is okay for student athletes to deal with that travel when our overpaid commissioner is whining about it?

The Big East makes geographic and competitive sense. It will help our men’s hoop team recruit (no northeast recruit wants to deal with AAC crazy travel from New England) and our women’s team may finally find a team that can beat them.

As for football, we were smart enough to realize that G5 football is a scam created by the P5. G5 schools burn crazy amounts of money to maybe play in a New Year’s bowl that still doesn’t really mean anything. There is no chance for a national title and most available AAC bowl games are pretty lame tie-ins to teams nobody cares about.

UConn knows that there are no seats left at the P5 table and there will never be an official “P6”.... ever.

As a northeastern basketball school, we did what was best for us. You just do you and we won’t judge your decisions.

just make sure the 17 million dollar check clears and good luck.

UConn has an enormous budget deficit. It is entirely UConn’s fault. UConn is nearly the worse team in football. It is entirely UConn’s fault. UConn has underachieved in basketball since their NC (even Memphis has performed better). It is entirely UConn’s fault.

Face it, your school surrendered because the AAC was too tough.

The deficit is certainly a lot of UConn’s fault. Having a football team that is terrible and can no longer draw a crowd as a result of being terrible is definitely UConn’s fault (that sport has been terribly mismanaged by our administration).

Men’s basketball is different, though. Our bread and butter was always recruiting NYC and those recruits don’t care about playing in the AAC. It is too far for a recruit’s family to see them play any road games and the tournament is now in Fort Worth (which may as well be on the moon from where we are). If you are in Memphis, Dallas, Houston, or Wichita the geographic reality is much different. Even flying in from Cincinnati is much closer.

We surrendered because it was a poor geographic fit that involved playing schools with whom we have no history. You all for the most part were in CUSA together (and for Temple and Wichita, this was a step up from the A-10 and MVC respectively). UConn’s history is the Big East and NYC. It will be nice to be “home” again up north.

UConn football about to be a dinosaur. They can solely focus on hoops. UConn basketball isn't even that great right now.

Strictly speaking the money's coming from the students, but yea - it's good the university is finally making changes from what clearly wasn't working the last several years. Status quo was death.

God you are delusional, it's done no need to defend anything here... Go to the NBE board.

How Conn runs their athletic dept, how much they invest, what the school does for marketing.

Well, even Philly doesn’t give a $hit about Temple. Philly is Villanova’s town (they are arguably a “blue blood” hoop school now). Enjoy your trips to Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, Louisiana, Florida, and Tennessee. That travel makes so much sense for a northeastern school.

You have one guy from NY. Should I be impressed? If Penny can't land at least one NY guy per year just for being Penny, he should be fired.

That said, it is harder for northeastern schools to lure up southern recruits. Y’all normally don’t move far from your families. Not that that is bad. Southern families are pretty tight and I respect that. I wish we focused on our families and didn’t get distracted by stuff that doesn’t matter nearly as much. Being tight with family beats chasing money. As the Beatles said, money can’t buy you love.

Anyway, I just went off on a speech about family and love. I should add why.

I am in a tough health period at the moment (I don’t want to prematurely give details yet). Challenges may come. I just want to thank you all for the years of conversation on here in case I go dark on here soon.

I have been crankier than normal for a few months, but that is a lot of it. Please keep that info in perspective for my sake.

Hopefully I will be back to my healthier and happier self soon. In the interim, I wish you all the best.

Philly is Villanova’s town...

Wrong. First, "Philly" is not a "town." It is a major metropolitan area with 6 million+ inhabitants.

Second, "Philly" is nobody's town, city, or metropolitan area with respect to college athletics.

Philadelphia (and its 6 million population metro area) has 6 D1 basketball programs, known as "the City Six," including the nationally recognized Big Five. There has, for nearly a century, been a rich and dynamic college (and HS) basketball culture in the city and surroundings.

Third, each of the City Six and Big Five teams has a substantial fan base, legacy, and traditions of its own.

Fourth - with occasional exceptions - there isn't a single team that dominates the college basketball scene. Although Villanova has been most successful since 2013, Penn, LaSalle, St. Joseph's, and Temple have each had outstanding seasons in which they've been in the limelight.

Sixth, many Philly-area college BB fans consider themselves to be Big Five fans, and most of us follow the ups and downs of each Big Five team, as well as the annual round-robin tournament of Big Five games and the careers of the Big Five coaches and players. There are annual honors and awards, and there is a Big Five Hall of Fame.

Seventh, there also is a sizable contingent of Penn State MBB fans in the Philadelphia area.

============================================

NCAA Appearances by other Big Five teams since 2010:

Penn (2013) (Total NCAA trips: 24)

LaSalle (2013 (sweet 16) & 2012 NIT) (Total NCAA trips: 12)

St. Joseph's (2014 & 2016 & 2012 & 2013 NIT) (Total NCAA trips: 21)

Temple (2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2016, & 2019) (Total NCAA trips: 30)

[b]Big Five Championships: 1956-2019

1) Temple: 27 Championships
2) Villanova: 26 Championships
3) St. Joseph's: 20 Championships
4) La Salle: 11 Championships
5) Pennsylvania: 14 Championships

Talk to you soon.

It's just banter between guys. No worries.

Good luck with your tests. Stay strong.

Here's a story from the same paper from about a year ago that puts a different spin on it.

https://www.courant.com/sports/uconn-hus...story.html

It's a pretty interesting read.

Face it, your school surrendered because the AAC was too tough.

That's basically it in a nutshell.

Can't compete? Quit.

Best wishes on your health and today's tests.
