Why was Andy Kennedy fired for one bad season?
Was watching the Bama - Auburn game and he talked about his playing time at UAB. I remember there was some controversy about him having an altercation with a cab driver, but couldn’t find much about it. His coaching record was pretty incredible for a program with no history of success at basketball. Don’t understand why he was fired after one bad season. Was he ever offered the UAB job?

Mediocrity is what a friend of mine told me. My buddy is an Ole Miss grad and basketball fan. He said a lot of the alumni was tired of the same results every year despite him being the best coach in their programs history. The public intoxication/cab driver incident along with his last season there were some of the things that just helped push him out the door allowing him to "resign". He was never offered the UAB job as he was still coaching when the job came open.

RE: Why was Andy Kennedy fired for one bad season?
Kennedy went 21-13 in his one season as head coach at Cincy.

In 12 seasons at Ole Miss, he won 20 or more games in 9 seasons. In 2013, his team went 27-9 and made it to the second round of the NCAAs. They also won the conference tournament that season.

His last season at Ole Miss (2018) was bad. They went 12-20 overall and only 5-13 in conference.

But his overall record at Ole Miss was 246-160. His conference record was 103-101.

For all 13 seasons, which includes the Cincy season, his teams only went to the Big Dance twice. In 2013 they were the 12th seed, and in 2015 as the 11th seed. His NCAA Tourney record is 2-2.

His end of the season KenPom ranking was only out of the top 100 once, that last season. His teams were only ranked in the top 50 five times.

His NIT record was 11-7. They went to the NIT seven times.

AK would be an improvement but I'm not sure how big of one.

Steve Forbes at ETSU would be cheaper and prob just as good.

UAB has to be able to out-bid teams from the SoCon. If we can't then just forget moving to the AAC and accept our inevitable 2nd division status in college athletics.

**** getting off the pot. It's time UAB took a big **** and revived this once great program.

Basketball won’t get us to the AAC football will but basketball doesn’t need It to be an anchor. It’s football calling the shots and active donor base.

I think the biggest things were that Ole Miss thought they had a really good team that year and they ended up with a poor record. They had also just sunk money into the program for the arena and facilities.

Given how much people hate Bruce Pearl on this board I doubt Forbes would actually get any traction. He was also slapped with a show-cause while working under Bruce at Tennessee.

I hope we make the dance this year but if not then my list is:
1) Andy Kennedy
2) Chris Jans
3) Tony Pujol
4) Someone from Gregg Marshall's staff

The next question probably should be why hasn't anyone else hired him since?

Don't know if Kennedy wants to coach again at UAB or anywhere else, but he already lives in Hoover and he would be an upgrade over Ehsan (but so would almost anybody).

Football definitely drives the bus and we're smart to invest our resources there. I just wonder at what point does the basketball program become an anchor like you mentioned? One could conceivably say we're already there, especially if we don't make the post-season this year. While football is more important in terms of realignment, I just hope basketball isn't left to just wander in the wilderness until such a move happens or doesn't happen.

Damn right it doesn't need to be an anchor. With our history and tradition in hoops, it should be a strength that differentiates us from our competition.
