West Virginia is a beautiful place to live. They never modernized/diversified their economy when other states/cities did, and lost too much tax base as a result.

The good side is that property is VERY affordable out there for those not reliant on metropolitan areas for business.

Link?

I lived and worked all over West By God and I disagree. It's not a shitehole like most metro areas but I'd like to see proof of your modernized/ diversified claim. The state seemed to be growing at a steady pace

You must have not spent too much time in southern WV. The state rode the extraction economy far too long, under taxed the out of state corporations that took all the real money made out of the state, and got stuck with a ton of remediation issues. Southern WV is ground zero for the opiate war because of this belief that coal was forever.

Not a shithole? It’s on par with developing countries in some areas. It’s poooooooor.

Southern West Virginia is perhaps the shittiest place in the country. Eastern wv is pretty and doesn’t look as dumpy, but it also has fewer people to junk it up. I can’t really speak to northern or western wv as I’ve never been there, but I have family all over the southern half of wv and have spent a lot of time there. It is not an area I would ever entertain living.

Santa Fe and Albuquerque are pretty nice. Much of the state is desolate, but interesting.

Virginia could give away just three counties to Maryland and become a thoroughly decent place again.

Eastern NC is flat west virginia, until you get about 10-15 miles from the coast. It's worse than Southern WV since it doesn't even have nice scenery.

Not people... politicians and government employees.

This is pretty close to spot on. ECU had to start a school of dentistry less than a decade ago because the area really had no dentists. It was crazy to think!

Hey, nothing wrong with the sweet sweet aroma of hog farms framed on all sides by fields and fields of tobacco and cotton...............

Hadn't been out that way in a while, have ya? Tobacco and cotton have largely been replaced with crops of solar panels.

Wish I had land enough to raise a fine crop of solar.

At the time I made the original post I thought WV was tossing this out there to see if they got any bites.

I didn't realize this was in response to VA state legislators discussing allowing counties to secede from the state.

It would be interesting, to say the least, to see WV comprised of 95% of what was an original colony. Would also open up the possibilities of rural counties of other states looking to realign with state governments that are more conservative.

Personally it is time to talk about redrawing state lines. The cities need to be separated from the rest of the state(s) it would save a lot of headache. Good discussion on Cam and Company today.
