Pulled the 2 deep from the NC game notes and added how many of each position returning on our current roster. I feel really good about our OL and after looking at how many DL we have on roster, I feel pretty good about it since we already have the interior set. WR will definitely miss Polk, but I'm optimistic with the overall experience of the group. LB and CB stick out as the most unproven with the least depth.

As for defense, I think the D-line will be just fine. But the strength will be on the inside this year. Greene and Atariwa are already great players and could be a dangerous force on the inside that could help the DE's get pressure.
LB is a position I'm concerned about.
If Cignetti feels like we need any help at a position I'm sure we'll find that out based on any future incoming transfers.

Is Adams already enrolled? If not I can't see him competing this fall.
from what I've read and heard, these are the early enrollee's
DL
Mikall Kamara Freshman
Abi N-Okonji Minnesota Transfer

DB
Antonio Webb Freshman
Sammy Malignaggi Freshman
Joseph Norwood UMass Transfer

OL
Charles Hubbard UConn Transfer

WR
Antwane Wells Freshman

If true then I see almost no way that Adams could start as a true freshman. If he is our starter week 1 I would say he is either unbelievable or Gage or Cole are really bad.

Obviously looking at the roster, the 2 inside LB spots are the thinnest position. 4 losses, I only see 5 guys returning, with no signed freshmen or transfer announced as of yet.

I totally forgot about Kris Thornton! Makes me feel a little better about the WR position.

RE: 2020 Depth Chart
I am hoping Ravenel can be a good one. He has not red shirted so he is still somewhat young. He made a big catch on 4th down in the first playoff game and just looks the part.

Cornerback is my biggest concern. We seem deep at safety.

A lot of QBs in the transfer portal undecided... you would have to think a few will go to FCS schools.

Believe Fishpaw isn't using his redshirt Senior year, as well.

Thanks 4010. I now see he isn’t on the 2020 roster. Updated.

RE: 2020 Depth Chart
3 transfers so far at
-OL (was slated to be 2020 UConn starting OC)
-DB (was 2 deep/started some games at safety for UMass).
-DL (listed at 270 Minnesota, but probably DE).

As of now slated to be 1 less (FBS transfer) on the 2020 roster than 2019 (graduated 4: Dinucci, Polk, Carter, Word). Still have Hamilton, Davis, Colclough.

-Looks like possible remaining needs at LB, corner & getting a big possession WR.
-Then of course the great QB debate: should and does JMU take a transfer?.

Our returning LBs who got rotational playing time this past season are literally thin, relatively speaking, for the position.

When you play a "spur", you're already sacrificing a bit of size for greater speed & versatility. Throw in Tucker-Dorsey (5'10"-213) and Azanama (5'11"-214) and that might be our smallest LB corp since the 70s. I know those two can play, but wouldn't mind a LB with size to come our way.

True. But Jackson and Ayamel (as a true Fr) are both listed at 230, and Jones (as a true Fr) at 213. You have to figure Ayamel and Jones put on some pounds from their true Fr to rFr seasons..

Right.....and Hollway (best LB and tackler) was listed at 6'2", 217.......damn think how good he could have been were he not so thin.....give me a break. Also Mike Cobb listed at 6'2", 215 and Landon Word at 6'5", 225.

Seems to me that our returning LBs will be right in line with what we had this past season.

OK sure....maybe if they are playing LB for Alabama OR Clemson. But the sizes are right in line with most LBs in FCS and at JMU over the last few years. No acid here just pointing out the fact that the guys remaining on the roster are right in line with those that were seniors. Sorry if you did not like the narrative being debunked with regard to returning LBs size.

The LBs at the FCS level are typically 6'2" and under b/c that is sorta the cut off......if they were taller would probably not be playing for JMU as the offers would be different. As sad as it is, a lot of the recruiting and 'stars' is determined by measureables (height/weight/wing span/etc...) and camps with no pads on as compared to actual friday night game play.

That's right, it seems to YOU. …"give me a break". Bottle the acid Shady. They are both short and light for the position, it seems to ME

No narrative was debunked.

Our 2 leading LB tacklers for our championship game era , each year from 2016-2019 averaged 6'2", 228 lbs

The FCS All American 1st thru 3rd teams last season had 15 LBs listed. They averaged 6'1.5", 233 lbs.

Tucker-Dorsey and Azanama average 5'10.5" and 214 lbs. To me that is significant.

I do believe both those guys can play. We've all seen it at various times through this past season. And as you say, a lot of the recruiting hype is not based on what they are doing on the field. But there is a reason the power schools chose the taller, heavier players if everything else like skill, smarts and speed are equal. Will be curious to see how this plays out next season if they shoulder the load as a pair.

I would expect those two to gain 5-10 lbs in the offseason.
