I was in person for it. It was awful.

I initially read this as you being in person for Bill's rejection from the ladies in high school.

Also of note: who would have thought that a top 5 ranked Michigan would have lost to an FCS team most people hadn't heard of. Of course now that FCS team has upgraded and is fairly well known and at the very least respected in FBS circles.

yeah.

How about how the spread has taken over football now from 20 years ago.

RE: It's the year 2020
2000 was the year of my first CFB game: #1 Nebraska @ #25 Notre Dame. I remember people on the bus wearing corn stalks on their head. I remember the stadium being 2/3 red. Pretty sure Gameday was there.

Nebraska won in OT. We left early and walking out of the stadium, people were watching the game on these “walkie” things with an antenna that would air OTA channels.

In a few years, those things were extinct. Within 10 years, people could watch the game on a smart phone. And the program college football revolved around back then hasn’t been to a bowl in 4 years today.

The rivalry issue is exaggerated, and not entirely that recent.

The Big 12 let the Nebraska-Oklahoma rivalry die in the 1990s after OU said, "We don't want to play Nebraska every year; our real rival is Texas."

Utah still plays BYU almost every year, TCU still plays SMU, WVU could still play Pitt any year if both teams wanted to, and very very few people ever cared about any football "rivalries" that Rutgers, Maryland, or Missouri ever had. Well, maybe Rutgers-Princeton. 07-coffee3

Not quite incredible -- NDSU won 5 national titles in D-II before moving to D-I FCS, and like their current run, won those titles with 3 different head coaches.

Kansas-Missouri rivalry?

Gonzaga is number and no one bats an eye at it. You can barely say you saw it coming at the turn of the century.

RE: It's the year 2020
2525 was released in 1968 and reached #1 in the summer of 69 at the time of the Apollo 11 landing. 1969 was the 100th year of college football. Texas won the national title with a win over Arkansas in the Big Shootout attended by President Nixon and then with a win over Notre Dame in the Cotton Bowl, Notre Dame's first bowl appearance in 50 years. Texas was the last all white national champ.

On the Minnesota thread, I noted that Minnesota last won the Big 10 52 years ago in 1967, tying with Indiana and Purdue. Indiana went to the Rose Bowl. Wyoming went to the Sugar Bowl. Oregon St. was also top 10. Much different from today.

I was looking at the polls for those years and was struck that the longevity of coaches was different too. Top 20 coaches in 1969-Darrell Royal Texas, Joe Paterno Penn St., John McKay USC, Woody Hayes Ohio St., Ara Parseghian Notre Dame, Dan Devine Missouri, Frank Broyles Arkansas, Jonny Vaught Ole Miss, Bo SChembechler Michigan, Charlie McClendon LSU, Bob Devaney Nebraska, Bill Yeoman Houston, Tommy Prothro UCLA, Ray Graves Florida, Doug Dickey Tennessee, Eddie Crowder Colorado, Jim Carlen W. Virginia, Jack Mollenkopf Purdue, John Ralston Standford, Shug Jordan Auburn. At least a dozen of those are legends at their schools and at least half are among the top college coaches of all time.

1968 poll included Hayden Fry at SMU, Pepper Rodgers at Kansas, Chuck Fairbanks at Oklahoma, Vince Dooley at Georgia and Bear Bryant at Alabama.

One school, at least as of 2002, we thought we'd be talking more about was Fresno State. What happened?

Not a big name in 2000 or even 2002. Fresno got years of hype for an excellent half season against a tough schedule for a full decade.
