Assistant? We look like a completely different team. Burke is a defense first, play hard coach. We're playing with some swagger. If we play like this the rest of the year, i'd hand him the keys. Love his energy!

Yeah. Assistant.

You're obvioulsy not watching the game. The change is dramatic. He has an undersized bunch of sophomores and freshmen going toe to toe with the preseason favorites loaded with seniors. He has them playing hard nosed defense, diving for balls, battling on the boards, with good movement on offense...after TWO days of practice. The difference is night and day.

No. I didn’t. And I get that his personality and energy are way higher than what we saw from McGrath. I just want to see sustained change. Was tonight a result of the guys having a ton of adrenaline from all the change? Who knows. That’s why I want to see this sustained.

If he’s the real deal, then we’ll see by season’s end and go from there. After 2.5 years of failure I’m not ready to give someone from this group the big keys yet. However, the response he seems to get from the team if we go to another coach I would certainly hope there’s be a possibility that he’d stay on staff. How often does that ever happen though?

But you were prepared to declare him just an "assistant" based on the same one game. All I was saying is we shouldn't dismiss the fact he could be a good head coach, and he has been a head coach, not just an assistant. If you read the rest of my post, I said IF he could keep up this level of play for the rest of the year. I also wanted to see a dramatic change, and the change WAS dramatic.

We'll say how it plays out, but I have the same feeling about him as I did Keatts.

Absolutely a complete shift in the demeanor of the team, and Burke looks like a guy who can at least get an interview.

But let's pump the brakes slightly. Before the game I predicted we'd see him impress because a lot of Interim coaches do that in their first few games.

Either way Burke has a bright future ahead, whether that's here or elsewhere.

Teams tend to pull together when a coach is fired midseason. I need to see 6 or 7 wins down the stretch for me to be sold on him as the HC, but I'm really starting to like the idea of Byington with Burke on staff... I really hope that's possible.

Six or seven wins with 11 games left may be a bit of a stretch, with 6 of those games against the top 4 in the conference. Burke had a really short stint to coach these guys before facing Hofstra, and now has only has one day off before playing NU, whom we haven't played yet. I'd focus on the back half of the season when he's seen every team. We still haven't played NU or CofC.

Burke has got to let them push that ball off the rebound from that free throw. We had numbers with their big trailing behind... Should've never called the timeout. Other than that, he coached a darn good game.

Thing is, I trust this guy to review film, look for positives and negatives, and then make adjustments and correct mistakes.

RE: Hofstra (Thursday - 7 PM); Northeastern (Saturday, Jan 18 - 7 PM)
I liked everything but the final play and he will learn from it. If you've got some #'s, you have to let the players decide the outcome in a scramble situation. That final play was too rigid and Sims never had a chance. We got too bunched up and they were crowding the 3 just to ensure that they didn't lose the game which is what I would have done too.

Overall, I liked Okauru's play tonight. He's becoming a beast and is finally playing up to his immense potential. Dodd was impressive tonight for sure as was Phillips. Two of our top 3 performers were freshmen IMHO.

Burke has to find a way to get them to execute against a 2/3 zone or even teams that impliment a 3/2. Our team has really struggled against the zone this year. Hawks should be getting great looks each time down. Mike did some good things along the baseline via a few nice passes from Ty G but we need a good high post look after a reversal or 2 on a more consistent basis. Need to get that touch to make the defense collapse. A good pass fake goes a long way too. Our 2 second half 3-ball makes were done via a nifty pass fake and a paint kick for example.

Once, if, we can get Ty going again along with Sims via execution, they should have a better chance, but it starts with good execution. Our post guys have to be willing to kick back out if it's not there.

All true. But let's not forget, he's only had TWO practices to work with them and our offensive movement already looks much better. The last play was just awful, and it was really the biggest mistake I saw tonight. We also had some really nice kickouts for open 3's, but our guys just aren't hitting. It's really the first game i've seen us with wide open shots. I sure hope Estime comes back. He has a really complete offensive game and could give us more firepower that we desperately need. I do have to point out that Hofstra isn't a really big team, so they couldn't exploit our lack of size like other CAA teams can.

I'm with you on that. Also, I hear you about him as a potential HC. Tonight was a good first impression... Let's see how he builds off of it.

We'll say how it plays out, but I have the same feeling about him as I did Keatts.

Looks like 82 wasn't the only one that saw a resemblance to Keatts.

7. Will this style of intensity work long term? I have no idea. But I'm glad we'll get to find out.

Man, what a difference in attitude from Burke.

Q- How are you going to replicate the energy from the players tonight this Saturday?
A- You DEMAND it from then. You don't accept anything less than what they did tonight. It's all about your intestinal fortitude.

He also KNOWS the game. Just listen to the details. "We have to be in better shape. My intensity level is going to be higher, so their conditioning has to be higher".

Damn! Love this guy!

I was impressed that he painted a vision - try to finish in 6th place, get a bye, get hot in the tournament - for a CAA championship this year. And you get the impression that he believes it, and can get his players to believe it.

Hope vs Hopelessness.

I'm starting to wonder if Bass may have realized his next head coach was potentially Burke all along. He's been an assistant to McGrath from the start. And letting go of McGrath was a chance for Burke to show what he can do. Jimmy may have set this interim gig up as an audition. You'd have thought Esleek was the natural to name as the interim, but Jimmy chose Burke for a reason. If I could pick out Burke as a casual observer, Bass saw him up close and personal for 2.5 years. Wouldn't shock me if he contacted Byington to get the low down on him.

Burke also stated plainly in this presser that he is going to be a DI head coach.

Listen to the players also. Although everyone is saying McGrath is a great person, they are all praising Burke as a COACH. Listen to Okauru. He is emphatically stating we will see a different TEAM over the next two weeks. The players are feeding off the energy and plan of Burke. It really sounds like they wanted the change.

There's an undeniable energy that hasn't been there in 2.5 years. Certain players need to be coached like that. Dodd and Okauru looked locked in last night.... That's not a coincidence

In all walks off life, people take on the attitude of their leaders, especially in a sports environment. I'm pleasantly surprised by game one, and listening to his presser i can feel the energy too. For the first time in 3 years i watched a postgame presser and didn't want to punch the coach in the face, that's something! haha

Piggybacking on your comments; you have to remember that there's a big difference between ENERGY and INTENSITY. Energy can be faked. Intensity cannot.

I think Burke is in the "high intensity" group, which is great to see.
