If we have two guys that are equally qualified for a position, whether HC or assistant, being an alum could be tiebreaker, but I'm not interested in those guys just for sentimental purposes.

I agree with you on that. One reason I like Siddle is because I think he'd bring back some familiar faces. However, if a more qualified candidate is interested he should get the job.

What familiar faces do you think he'd bring along? Not bashing at all, just curious.

Possible names I think he'd consider bringing on his staff with prior connections to UNCW:

Casey Stanley
Thomas Carr
Travis Hackert
Hunter Henderson
Craig Ponder
Ambrose Mosley

As long as the old PA guy isn't there to stutter Ponder's name, I'm in.... haha

LOL... 5 positions on our coaching staff. I'd be willing to bet at least 4 or 5 positions would be filled by guys on that list if Siddle got the job.

But if 2 candidates are about equal and one is a UNCW guy, I’d go with him. Not being sentimental, just practical. We need a coach who will win here AND will stay a little bit. Say, 5 years. A UNCW guy might be more loyal to us than most.

I wasn't positive, but didn't think you were entirely serious. Justus scares me a little because he doesn't have HC experience, but I'm on the same page with you. The loyalty we desire could make a huge difference. Five years of success would set us up a lot better than three. That's not intended to be a slight to Keatts, but two more years of success would've been huge for recruiting, and I speculate, would've made a difference on Bass' willingness to hire one of his assistants. While we hope for someone to step in to be a lifer, that's probably not realistic, which makes 82's point about continuity all the more important.

That last part IMO is the most important. Being able to groom someone for that long makes a lot of people comfortable in a smooth transition. See, Jerry------> BB

No offense intended here but that list is not real impressive. I hope they go the exact opposite route and get a proven D1 guy with HC experience and give him a 5 year deal with support from the very top. It's a critical time for UNCW basketball and while you there are no sure things in sports I would take as gamble out of the equation as possible. Siddle might be a great one some day but I would let him prove it somewhere else.

No offense taken at all. Like I said if someone more qualified wants the job, they should get it. Don't know what really qualifies as a potential impressive staff at the mid major level. Stanley was heavily involved in the recruitment of Cacok, Carr is at NCCU under Moton now... I think under Siddle's guidance that could be a successful group.

It would be interesting to take a look at Wainwright's staff. Mike Winiecki isn't a HC, but Brownell and Terry are both doing well. It is crazy how good we had it then.

I think that's a reason why Wainwright was so great. He hired and recruited good basketball minds. The amount of coaches we have around college basketball from that era is quite impressive.

Speaking of Rodney Terry, I saw on twitter recently that he was admitted to the hospital in critical condition with anaphylactic shock caused by an allergic reaction to a meal. Looks like he's doing fine now. Not sure if this was shared on here previously.

Still think Mark Byington would be perfect. In his 7th year as a HC at a mid major he has finished 2nd, fifth, 3rd, 3rd and 2nd in the Sun Belt. Always top half finish in a conference that is probably a little better right now than the CAA.

This is almost completely in jest, but I think Byington looks too much like McGrath to be our next coach

RE: Coaching speculation
If you read some news stories about the hiring of the assistant at Wofford, the number one factor was continuity. That was the word from the AD and administration.

Not sure how old he is or his interest, but a Brownell assistant went with Earl Grant to CofC. He must have been pretty important to Brownell because Brownell hired him back and he's there now.

Not a bad idea. And a great way to open a door for Blizzard to get in the coaching arena. Keatts pretty much filled his assistant spots with former Hargrave players. Siddle played under Keatts and then joined his coaching staff there and ended up with him at UNCW.

I'm fine with either coaaching tree. They both are defensive oriented identities.

The only issue with the Wainright tree, is the rules have changed, it's harder to be physical. But, anything it better than what we had

May be, but the main emphasis was defense. Earl Grant followed in the footsteps of Brownell with a pretty physical brand of defense and seems to be doing ok. He had the same problem as Brownell. He REALLY needs a couple of drop dead offensive players to win.

Article from 2018. He is making a base salary just over $282,000. Contract is good through 2021-2022. That salary is in our ballpark but don’t know if we could afford to buy him out for two seasons.

Interesting. The better for us. Though not sure why there is a two year discrepancy in contract length. So his contract ends after this season. That is convenient if true.
