Sounds like an anomaly. Possibly injuries-related? He's only had 2 losing seasons out of 10 there, and 1 of them was his first season there.

All solid candidates. I'm down for any of these types of options.

His teams usually peak around the conference tournament. Great motivator and solid recuritter. He actually just offered Bronny James a scholarship for kicks. No chance in getting him, but he knows that it gets NCCU some publicity.

I feel like I gotta ask, think Tony Shaver's name would come up?

I remember you posted Soderberg a while back. He really fits the bill. Success as a D1 coach and a bunch of experience under the Bennets. He would be my favorite of the 3 you posted

We could do a lot worse. No, he didn't make an NCAA Tournament. But few coaches can do better with the academic restrictions W&M has. He'd at bare minimum get our program competitive, and likely do so very quickly.

To me, he's about as close to the Mark Scalf of College Basketball as you can get.

And I don't care about the UNC connections for Shaver. We know he's the real deal. He mostly kicked our a$$es year in and year out, regardless of who our HC was.

The administration would have to meet on Monday to discuss finances, contracts, speak to Burke, etc. before they could make a decision.

That makes sense. I guess I'm just surprised they didn't t cancel the show today if this was a possibility. For what it's worth today's show isn't online. For all the talk of not being able to afford a 2 year buyout, it seems money was no issue as we now have a 2.5 year buyout

This couldn’t have been that much of a surprise. I’d even venture to say he had been warned continually losing would get to this point. I’d even venture that’s why he left his beloved M2M defense he spent two and a half years almost being so stubborn with, and all of a sudden he has a massive defensive change of heart just because? I doubt it. If he had made that change in year one or two and just retained the style of play we were so successful with, he’d likely still be the HC. Too little too late and by then he had lost the pieces that would have kept that system successful.

But, hey. Mullet has it all figured out. Jimmy Bass is obviously the problem. You know... that horrid AD that brought us a coach who won two outright CAA championships in three years.

You make great points about McGrath's refusal to change from what he wanted to work and how it ended up costing him. I would argue that anytime you are fired midseason especially at the CAA level it's a surprise. I don't think it makes that much difference in the end when the change occurred however you don't send a guy to do his radio show when you are going to let him go in 5 hours

I would absolutely entertain the idea. The man can flat out coach the hell out of the game. He recruits solid players, team guys, and we’d see a. Ron of movement in our offense and gritty defense similar to the Brownell days.

Geez. I would actually love it. And I’m sure he’s get a kick out of being successful at UNCW with less stringent restrictions, and the chance to spurn WM at least twice a year.

He’d honestly be a slam dunk hire, IMO.

My guess is they go with a consulting firm to find a coach but I would be ok with Shaver or Byington. I doubt the chancellor will allow Bass to make a hire himself without a national search.

Hiring Shaver would sure heat up the UNCW W&M games

I wonder if they will consider him or if he is interested

NC ties (he's from High Point, NC) and CAA knowledge? Makes too much sense.

Plus he's not currently a coach anywhere right? That means he could be recruiting right now if he wanted to. Coaches not currently with a team aren't subject to NCAA rules on recruiting until they get hired. Bob Huggins used that "loophole" to his advantage at West Virginia.

The VCU guy is my pick. His entire career has been under coaches from the VCU tree. Three years under former VCU assistant Mike Jones at Radford, then went with Rhodes at Rice and followed him to VCU. Nine years under that system.

If you think CB's Defense drove you nuts......................

Of all the people discussed so far, the UVA guy is a no brainer

By the way, here is my proverbial chest thump, Called the demise of CB on the day he was hired. I was called many different things by many of you, but the only thing i should have been called was right, spot on in fact! Was really hoping i was wrong, but here we are. Now that i got that off my chest :) haha

Speaking of Mike Jones, UNCW is a better job than Radford. I wonder if he'd be interested in leaving the program he's built there.

RE: C.B. McGrath fired: Burke to serve as Interim Coach
Based on the names that have been mentioned on this thread, I like Shaver and Moton the most. There seem to be a lot of advantages to Shaver; I wonder how our current pieces fit in his system? I absolutely love Moton and I was really interested in him when we went through this exercise three years ago. Soderberg and Sutton also fit the description of what we seem to need. Just from reading bio's, I like Soderberg. I don't really have a strong opinion on Byington. Would be cool to see an alumnus succeed, but that is secondary.

Joe Ovies seemed to disagree with the move too. I don't care one bit what the talking heads in Raleigh say, especially when they mock the fact that it's UNCW making the move midseason.
