Mount Union head coach Vince Kehres heading to Toledo
Toledo football coach Jason Candle will be dipping back into his Mount Union background to fill an open coaching spot with the Rockets, The Blade has learned.

Candle is expected to add Mount Union head coach Vince Kehres to the Toledo staff as a defensive assistant, according to sources with knowledge of the situation.

Kehres’ role has not been finalized, but will either be linebackers coach/assistant head coach or defensive coordinator, the sources said.

It has worked out well for Buffalo, I hope it works out well for UT, but I was hoping for a coach with more experience at a higher level, say maybe FCS.

D-III is not D-I, sometimes it translates, sometimes it doesn't, only time will tell, but I think most here have seen too many D-III hires for a D-I program. Hopefully it works out, only time will tell.

Probably disappointed more than mad...
I was hoping JC would think outside the box a bit and possibly bring on someone that, like Rocket A said, has at least a proven FCS resume...
Furthermore, success at the Div. 3 or NAIA level does not always translate into a winning formula in FBS football...

Sounds good but then so did Larry Gipson.

Not that Gipson was great, but his teams did improve every year.

Or maybe working at UT or with Candle (or with salary they are to receive) is not as appealing as we may think 07-coffee3

RE: Mount Union head coach Vince Kehres heading to Toledo
Not going to comment on his capabilities until I have a chance to look at what he has accomplished. First question is whether or not he was picked to be the head coach at Mt. Union because of how good he was, or because he was the son of the prior head coach.

A couple of things I found while doing a quick look-up of his past were what are called the "Top 3 wise famous quotes and sayings by Vince Kehres". This worries me a bit, because I don't find them to be particularly wise and certainly not very famous. I didn't make these up, although it would seem that someone did just to poke fun at his expense....

1. "Sometimes when your emotions are running high, it makes it harder to execute." (Just sometimes is all?? so does that mean most of the time you let your emotions run high? Is that what he was trying to say? )
2. "I think the best coaches have their own style. That takes time to mold that"
3 "Preparing for another opponent isn't very glamorous. But it's Hollywood. You want to see the fun parts. The meeting rooms aren't super fun."

Hope he coaches a lot better than he lends to the realm of spreading his philosophy on coaching football.

RE: Mount Union head coach Vince Kehres heading to Toledo
In the end, what matters is that he is a good coach who can convey expectations to the players, drills fundamentals well, and can inspire the players to turn it all on at game time because they work hard in practice on fundamentals and a game plan. Tough to tell much by looking at the stats because they pretty much dominated their competition - most of whom I have never heard of before.

I guess I look at PJ Fleck and always thought his schtick was a little overboard. I think most thought it would never work at Big Ten Minnesota. They had a very good year, were competitive in all games and went 11-2 this year with the only losses being to Iowa and Wisconsin. And they have a young team.

I would say that Fleck's philosophy is a whole lot better than what I see in the "famous quotes".... I just hope my sense of too much "corn dog" is wrong. It was with Fleck...

Has to be better then the 2 clowns we fired. The talent pool may be a little smaller, but, it's the COACHING. Hoping it works out.

The last coaches (George, Ward) came from losing programs. The new OC/QB Coach Weiner and now Kehres are from winning programs. I love this hire as well. I'm just glad Coach Candle took his time. I can't wait until next year given these new hires, our returning players/recruits and our latest recruits. It's like new life has been breathed into our FB Team. GO ROCKETS!!

Hope you are right. I prefer to take a pessimistic view, that way I won't be surprised negatively but rather with things turning out better than I allow myself to believe they will. It never seemed to work out well the other way...

RE: Mount Union head coach Vince Kehres heading to Toledo
This is interesting. His family is pretty much royalty at MU aren't they? I assume the HC job there was assumed to be his for life. But this article:
https://www.cantonrep.com/sports/2020011...-to-toledo
says he has been interviewing for DI jobs for several years (implies they were for HC positions.) Kent, Akron and BG all mentioned. And it makes it sound like he turned down jobs, although that may not be true. Maybe looking to get out from his father's shadow and see how far he can go?

Also says that he talked to Candle about coming to UT last season, but decided that wasn't the right time. Wonder what job that would have been for ... D line, where they brought Black in instead?

I don't trust Candle's judgement one bit. Hope I am wrong on this one. I am concerned that our two hires have almost no recruiting experience. True, Kehres has to "recruit" players. but DIII gives no "true" scholarships. That gives us two assistants who have no experience recruiting DI players. It's a totally different animal.
