NTR- How Close Were We For Scott Drew?
I couldn't remember. I'm watching Baylor dismantle Kansas at Kansas and was just thinking what if we had hired him. Were we close at all?

I doubt that Kansas drops 12 spots in the polls after being dismantled by a lower ranked team at home.

Very close, we had him but there were some local media that waged a very negative campaign to the powers that be and they blinked.

So far Penny got us back to the NIT and in position right now to get back to the NCAA, seeding the biggest unknown most likely
And he will then have a sophomore and junior laden team competing legitimately for the top ten next season
I am okay

Only if he can land a couple of legitimate bigs. Guard play should be really good next year but Precious will go and then what do we really have at the 4/5? Not too much.

Kansas was 3 and Baylor 4 lol. The Baylor team I saw today could win the National Championship.

Lapides killed it... said he had a bad reputation among Big 12 coaches and panned the hire on the radio. Drew, soon after, removed his name from consideration.

I always admired Lapides but he whiffed on that one.

It was a similar situation like Mike Norvell to Arkansas. No specific allegations just generalized slander “he is a bad dude” kind of stuff. Those that promoted this got their way and it stopped the process.
Drew Scott would have been a great coach at Memphis. I will say, even though it has taken several years in the wilderness, we finally have the right coach now.

RE: NTR- How Close Were We For Scott Drew?
UofM= public school.
Baptist Christianity is not the main stay of our focus. Also, we don't threaten recruits with deportation if they choose another college. #Perea.
Fortunately, Scott Drew is focused on more than merely winning games or successful seasons — he is focused on eternity. A Fox Sports article noted that after a loss in 2014, Drew told one of the team chaplains, “We may not win another game this year, and I may be a horrible coach, but if any of these guys leave without knowing Christ, that would be the real loss.”
Drew’s calling is higher than coaching. His calling is to share Christ with his own team and help develop them into great players — but also great followers of Jesus. He has worked closely with Highland Church in Waco, watched players profess faith in Christ as Savior, and witnessed their baptisms.
"I've received a lot of love," said Lual-Achuil Jr., who was baptized weeks before the beginning of the season. "Baylor definitely has helped me with my faith. Being here and being around people that follow Christ, it has helped me open up and be able to commit my life to Christ."
He also recruits abroad: https://www.baylor.edu/alumni/magazine/1...?id=939987
We have talent in our backyard..front yard and side yards.

I agree with SnowTiger. Christians should not touch a basketball or go to games.

Calkins’ article was based on info he heard from George. They had a radio show together and George influenced both Geoff and RC. George raised questions on their show and Geoff followed with his article.
In all fairness, Drew was a relatively new coach and the Big 12 coaches thought he was dirty... Rick Barnes despised him. With that in mind, we made an obvious mistake.

RE: NTR- How Close Were We For Scott Drew?
Drew's record through 2009 was not so hot. He had been at Baylor for 6 years and his best record was NIT runner up (and an appearance in the Big Dance, lost in the first round). Of course, keep in mind he had taken over for Dave Bliss (ugh).
However, in the 11 years since then, he's been really, really good. 2 Elite 8's and 2 Sweet 16's at a place that is not easy to win at.
He was 32 or so when Baylor hired him. At this point, he just might be very happy at and loyal to Baylor and thankful for the confidence they displayed when hiring him and being patient with him.
