The C-USA East is the best place for Marshall.

A guaranteed annual trip to Florida and being in a division with Old Dominion, Charlotte, Western Kentucky, Middle Tennessee and the Florida twins trump anything the MAC could offer. If they really lie to play Ohio, they can set up a long H&H series.

I just do not get the resistance to even the idea of NDSU as a football-only plus a take-your-pick of South Dakota State and JMU. All of those schools would strengthen the league. NDSU in particular could provide a top 25 team some years, much the way Marshall did for the MAC 20+ years ago and recent FCS call-up App State has for the Sun Belt.

Pretty sure the resistance comes mostly from NDSU. I don't think they or their fans want to go to the MAC. The MAC division winners went to the New Mexico Bowl and the Lending Tree Bowl, I think NDSU would rather play for FCS titles than that.

Next year the #2 MAC will play in the AZ bowl against a #2/3 MW team.

Much like Montana & the WAC. I seriously doubt Montana would jump for the MWC either. It's the CFPs or nothing.

It's not like they're unfamiliar with those programs in the MAC & who does Marshall really care about playing in C-USA anyway? At least they have a real rival in Ohio. I get Florida and Texas recruiting but it seems like Marshall fielded better teams back when they were in the MAC as well. Their immediate success after leaving 1-AA reminds me of App State's recent ascension. They won the MAC 5 out of 7 years and finished ranked 3 times.

I read somewhere that MAC members spend on average close to a million less a year less on travel than other G5 conferences.
If that is true I could see the point two MAC schools have been the G5 champ or Access Bowl pick .
I would pair them with NDSU a thirteen time champ with great support.
For NDSU its a pathway to the Access Bowl vs FCS title.
A half share in TV money plus one P5 money game a year covers cost.
The MAC could add a solid basketball program for a travel partner for NIU or Buffalo helping offset cost.
So Marshal and NDSU/ Milwaukee or a program close to Buffalo.
NDSU is not a flight risk and have a good olympic sports home.
That is why football only makes sense this time and ESPN loves them.
No school has their level of success at a lower division or name recognition. Good school also so that is not a problem.
So no complaints of lowering the bar for a football factory.

The 2nd time was the best thing that ever happened to the MAC.

I thought it was a mistake like the 70s expansion which diluted the talent pool. Instead, Marshall still mostly recruiting mid-Atlantic and brought attention to the MAC.

Yep. That was the golden age for both Marshall and the MAC. As a MAC fan, I’d do anything to get the passion Marshall invoked across the league back.

I think NDSU could invoke passion similarly to what Marshall did. Like Marshall and App State, they'd be ready for FBS success from day one, and I don't see why MAC fans wouldn't be excited for such an opponent.

If the MAC could get Marshall and NDSU (football only), that would be a homerun and place the MAC solidly ahead of the SBC and CUSA in the CFP money distributions

The problem with the MAC inviting NDSU is that they'd probably run rampant over the whole league. 03-wink

It would be ideal for espn to say to cusa and the belt: “split up and become more regional. We will offer equal money and ncaa credits to both conferences.”

There would not be the same sort of passions. It wan't just the quality of the team because with many teams in the MAC and Marshal there is an enmity between them which predates Marshal's return in the 90s and was true back when Marshal was in FCS (Iaa back then) and were terrible. It may even predate the time when Marshal was booted out of the MAC for cheating too much but that I cannot say for sure.

NDSU would not have that they would be little different than when a MAC team plays anyone with a decent record that is not a P5 team that the MAC has no special connection with.

I don't think NDSU wants to move up due to being an annual FCS title contender, otherwise I'm sure they would have a long time ago.

if anything the MAC should add more Northeastern teams like bringing back UMass and getting Delaware and Stony Brook to move up.

SDSU and USD would jump through flaming hoops to join the MAC. UND would do anything short of drop hockey.

NDSU is the one the MAC would want most, though, and I think there's pretty significant resistance on the football side. Playing games on Tuesdays in November is a deal-breaker, and no school in the MAC has anything resembling a path to a national championship, which is the foundation of NDSU's success. The other sports would love it, even with the added travel of going to Ohio and Michigan every year.

No, that defeats the whole purpose of the league in the first place.

As an alumnus of a MAC school, Ohio, and as someone who has seen pretty much all of these campuses, it’s a really neat little league. The schools all fit together very well culturally and geographically. I would never change that if I were them. What the MAC has now is legitimately different than everyone else and I would never surrender that advantage. It’s a throwback to a simpler time in college athletics.

That said, when I was in college, Marshall was in the MAC and we had a great rivalry going with them. From OU’s perspective, at least when I was there, our big rivals were Marshall and Miami. Marshall was mostly a football thing while Miami was mostly a men’s basketball thing.

I’m really sorry to see that all go by the wayside and I have always wondered how it could possibly be worth it for Marshall to leave? I mean I guess I understand their thinking at the time, but that door is now officially closed and I wouldn’t be surprised to see them reconsider their MAC options if the league will still have them. Personally, I would definitely endorse their return to the MAC from an alumnus standpoint.

Ohio and Marshall are only about an hour and a half away from each other and used to fill up each other’s stadia in a way you don’t really see very often nowadays.

I think people underestimate how far away the Dakotas are from the rest of the Midwest.

The Westernmost MAC team (NIU) is more than 8 hours away from the closest Dakota school (SDSU).

NIU is actually closer to Marshall than it is to any Dakota school.

As I recall NIU to NDSU was the closest combination in this hypothetical and it was nearly as far as NIU current furthest conference foe in Bufffalo which is in a separate division so they play less whereas NDSU would be in the same division and would play more.

Effectively adding NDSU doubles the size of the conference which is a pretty bad deal for a league where a key advantage is its compact nature.
