Their true competition, App State moved up, it should almost be mandatory for NDSU as well at this point.

To be fair, it was more than just us.

The FCS is absolutely diluted.

Ignoring some of the other factors, the reality is less kids are playing high school ball which means a smaller talent pool. All the while more FBS teams exist since Apps 2008 FCS title, our last.

Despite the population of the country increasing, 100k less are playing high school ball in a decade of data. I imagine that number us even lower in 2019.

Since 2008, the following teams have joined FBS:

App
Charlotte
Coastal
Georgia Southern
Georgia State
Liberty
ODU
South Alabama
Texas State
UMASS
UTSA
Western Kentucky

4 of those are from scratch since 2008, so that’s 340 new FBS Scholarships.
Then we add 22 per FCS to FBS move up, so another 176.

516 additional FBS Scholarship athletes since 2008. During a time period where the talent pool dropped by almost 10%.

Another way to think of it is, there are 516 kids playing FBS football right now that would be playing FCS football in 2008. That’s over 8 teams worth of players.

NDSU joined the FCS in 2004 and won their first championship in 2011.

Could not watched the finish of this game since our local ABC station went blackout in the 3rd, and still not back on air.

It needs to happen. They could play 11 FBS games and SDSU as their FCS game each year (get a waiver to play @SDSU like Army@Yale).

Almost all from the south. Guess it shouldn't be any surprise the top teams are Big Sky and MVC with a few exceptions.

Yep. The SOCON really got stripped clean.

I still think NDSU wins a couple championships if none of us left, but it’d have been a heck of a lot more interesting.

That seems to have been the pattern - once a school establishes an FCS dynasty, they move up to FBS.

But ND State is stubborn, they ain't moving up, LOL.

21-10 .... game over.

Never understand terrible coaching that gets fooled by fake FGs and punts.

Yes, unlike most of the teams NDST has beaten in FCS title games, JMU wasn't physically overmatched, they had the talent to win the game. They just made about three critical mistakes that cost them the game.

Youngstown State (4 1-AA titles in the 90's under Tressel) never moved up, either.

I don’t see the consistent winning as a sign that teams like North Dakota St, James Madison, or even Youngstown St should move to FBS. Rather, I think Division I football needs 3 subdivisions.

There’s some real hard truth in that statement that 95% of G5 and lower tier P5 teams are unwilling to accept.

There are about 20 schools that have an actual shot at an FBS national title. They are basically professional teams moonlighting as NCAA teams. My beloved App State is not one of them.
App will never win a national championship in this current format and frankly even if the league expands to an 8 team playoff with a G5 autobid...does anyone honestly believe Memphis would have beat LSU, then the winner of Oklahoma vs Georgia, then beat another power P5 to win the title? No. It’ll never ever happen.

But could you imagine Boise, or App, or UCF, or even an Iowa/Wazzu/Syracuse/Arkansas/Colorado playing an FCS schedule? It’d be a joke.

There’s a place for Clemson and Alabama.
There’s a place for Colgate and Stony Brook.
There’s a no mans land for the rest of us.

That said I’d at least rather try to beat the varsity teams and lose as opposed to beat the **** out of pop warner teams every year.

Hopefully one day it breaks apart.

You could keep an FBS sub and still setup a G4-ish playoff using bowls like Boca Raton, Mobile, Arizona, etc. It would be more interesting to see NDSU & JMU compete for that national title and the playoff would be more fun for G fans than an ultimately meaningless bowl.

Truthfully it should be a G8-ish.

A solid half of the current “P5” teams only exist because they are in a conference with actual contenders.

You could cut the P5 down to about 20-30 teams in real divisions similar to the NFL and the rest could drop down with the current G5 teams and maybe 3-5 FCS teams.

It’ll never happen but it’s really what should.

I still say let the two highest-rated G5 conference champs play for the Access Bowl. That's about as close as you can get to having a separate subdivision while keeping the G5 within the CFP.

And it would eliminate the controversy of whether to pick an AAC team or a "G4" team with fewer losses for the NY6.
