I think we are looking at re-tooling the room with guys with different skill sets. Other than Tre Tucker who was a freshman, there was nobody in that WR room that could consistently break ankles and make a play in space. This is the type of athlete this staff wants.

Yup. Long and short of it is that the receivers outside of Pierce weren't very good.

Trent Cloud really disappeared last year. Not sure if he was hurt, but it was thought he was going to be very involved in the past season.

Which sure doesn’t help the offense or Ridder. We need better wide outs.

Javan Hawes played in only two games last year with no receptions. Seems like a plus for both parties; Hawes might find a spot at a lower level of competition and another spot opens up for a transfer or junior college receiver who might step right in for us.

Degura sure got big time attention as a receiver with Ridder as QB.

Dude... You can get the best WR's in the business, but Ridder has hit his ceiling. Ain't nobody gonna change that.

The WR corps may not have been great, but they can only work with the quality of what's thrown to them.

Yeah, the one guy in the thread recognized as a good WR was a victim of awful deep throws. WR is an issue but QB play is worse.

Two more years of Ridder starting and producing similar stats and victories, his name will be enshrined inside Nippert. And you haters will look silly.

Yep. Assuming he stays at his current production (and odds tell me his production will actually increase) he will finish with ~8000 yards passing, 2500 yards rushing, 80 TDs passing and 20 on the ground, and not to mention 44 wins in 4 years. He would finish statistically:
#2 in passing yards (career)
#1 in passing TDs (career)
#8 in rushing yards (career— this includes RBs)
#10 in rushing TDs (career- including RBs)

In two years Des has won more career games already than Tony Pike, Zach Collaros, Brendan Kay, and Gunner. He only needs 4 more wins to match Gino Guidigli’s 4 year win total.

Sure it takes a whole team-- but you know what, other guys have had great pieces around them too and those teams did not win 22 games in two years. The QB position is different than other positions, the team goes as the QB goes.

This is definitely true with the modern NFL and College game. However, we aren't really playing that style. We are more old school, run, play solid defense, win the field position battle, win the time of possession, and wear the opposing defenses down. The quarterback is not as important in such a system, and this has been proven anecdotally in games where Des played poorly and we still won by doing the things listed above.

RE: RJ Potts in the Transfer Portal
The (healthy) Des I saw in Birmingham was pretty efficient--even dominant. He seems to have the confidence of his teammates and the coaching staff as the field general. If he stays healthy, continues to improve accuracy on the deep ball, and consistency in the short passing game, UC will have double digit winning seasons again the next two years. Upgrading wide receivers should make most any QB improve on completion percentages.

We all have high hopes and expectations for Prater and I certainly believe those could be fulfilled. Gunner was similarly heralded upon his arrival. He had some fine games but we didn't see our program elevated and he didn't finish as an All American. If anyone in the QB room can earn the starting position for 2020, have at it. Until we see that, we've just had two of the best seasons in program history with this QB.

Sure it takes a whole team-- but you know what, other guys have had great pieces around them too and those teams did not win 22 games in two years. The QB position is different than other positions, the team goes as the QB goes.

I would argue that three of those listed were victims of circumstance more than anything else. Had Pike and Collaros not been injured they likely would've gotten to heights like that (Pike definitely would've), and Kay was a victim of a coach who was fascinated with how fast a guy could run versus how good of a true QB he is. Oddly enough, that's a situation we see at the moment to some extent w/ Ridder-Bryant argument. The one commonality between all of those listed is that none of them had defenses like the ones we've had these last two years. 2009 defense was swiss cheese, defense in 2012 was average by all stretches, and Gunner needed to win in shootouts all the time. The other big thing to note...Ridder has not had to go through a coaching transition, something that Kay and Collaros both had to do.

Having said that, we HAVE won 22 games these past two seasons, which matches the most over a two year stretch we've ever had in the program, so I'm all peaches at this point.

Yeah!

Like that 46-43 win at East Carolina where #5 had 1500 yards receiving on 85 receptions.

And that 34-30 win against Ohio U when they walked up and own the field on us with little to no resistance until Wiggins had to save us at the goal line or we would have lost.

Ridder was 12-24 for 161 yards and 2 ints against ecu.

His second half against Ohio is one of the two best halves he's had as a bearcat (first half v Marshall is the other).

Anyways defense has mostly been great but yea first half against ou and that ecu game were certainly exceptions.
