Vermont bill would ban cellphone use for anyone under 21

MONTPELIER, Vt. —
A bill seeking to ban the use of cellphones for anyone under the age of 21 was introduced by a Democratic state senator this week as legislators gathered in Montpelier for the first day of the 2020 legislative session.

GET THE LATEST: Download the MyNBC5 app

The bill, introduced to the judiciary committee by Sen. John Rodgers (Essex-Orleans), would make the possession of a cellphone punishable by up to one year in prison, a $1,000 fine, or both.

Rodgers writes within the proposal that cellphones are a large factor in teenage driving deaths and can lead to bullying and radicalization.

Thought the Democrats were trying to lower the voting age to 16.

Let's be honest though...it is Vermont...This bill would infringe on the rights of about 15 people. How many 18-21 year olds live there?

Believe this more symbolic than anything. I think I heard that the dude that introduced this said he probably wouldn't even vote for it if it ever came to that. It won't.

I actually kinda agree with it.. Maybe not 21.

I mean maybe make the age 16 or 17.

What does a 12 year old need with an iPhone 11?

Why would you care what somebody else's kid needs or doesn't need?

What does a 12 year old need with an iPhone 11?

Why would you care what somebody else's kid needs or doesn't need?

Good point.

But here's my side and you can disagree.. I find technology such as this distracting. Kids are more focused on getting the mini computer out to play Minecraft or make TikTok videos than they are on focusing on class or class work.

I saw it over Christmas with my nephew who is 14 who was more focused on watching YouTube than anything else. With my wife's niece and nephew who are under 10 wanting to play with an iPhone or iPad.. Even with my 4 year old who is mesmerized with a Fire Tablet.

The two under 10 got caught watching something that was talking about sex and didn't know what they were watching.

Maybe I'm too old fashioned and think kids should be kids and not zombies addicted to Technology. I know with our son, we only let him have his tablet once a week maybe.. He gets maybe an hour of TV a day during the week if that.. On the weekends I don't let him have his tablet and we may watch a movie or two in the evenings when it's just us.

It's more of an observation than anything else. And I'm sure there are legitimate reasons for kids that young to need phones, but we didn't (but let's be honest in that day and age the cellphones were huge, expensive, and you got charged by the minute when you made a call, it wasn't until my first or second year of college when texting was a thing or a thing in my neck of the woods).

But can we be real..

Even if this did happen, would they actually enforce this? Doubt it.

that's my take....

I'll share a li'l personal summin' about how I dealt with my daughter once it became 'an issue'....

I bought her a simple keyboard style cell when she was 8.......

why did I do that? was it to keep her busy.....was it to make her feel like she was part of the gang.....

napes....

it was to teach her the beginnings of responsibility of keeping up with property and proper usage....the mandate was 100 mins. for calls only, no texting, and if she exceeded either/or.....no phone for 1 mos.....

guess what happened.....she never visited the penalty box....

to this day when I get the rare daddy/daughter 'date', neither cell enters the building....

humility and respect in a social setting???......w/o question, most sheeple have a difficult time getting a grip on such....when they're pups, it's increasingly most important to train such....

TRAIN EM WELL OR LOSE EM FOREVER

CHOICE

as always, JMTC based on personal experience...

Remember the law maker's bill says "possession" of a mobile phone is punishable.
The law is introduced because "too" many younger people drive while texting and get bullied via social media, and there are already laws against that. The bill is the most insane thing imaginable. People use phones for dam near everything today, food order, uber driving, gps, nest, job app, etc.

it's a must when in the field.....it's scary how efficient I conduct business vs. a toll phone....

it's also not that hard to pull over to respond to critical calls....

stupid fks that pounce when their phone 'rings' is about as sick and pathetic as it gets....

'hey, look at me' is a parental training issue.....nothing more, noting less....
