Just develop a nice mid range game

Speaking of a nice mid-range game, we need to show these kids some videos of Phillip "Doom" Haynes from the early 80's. Now he had a great mid-range game. Nobody could, then or now, bank shots off the glass from 10 to 15 feet like he did.

I thought of this when IM missed a 12ft-er that he tried to swish. Nobody uses the glass anymore. You see it more on bad 3s these days (bbal in general, not just Memphis) than you do on 10-15ft-ers.

The bank shot retired with Tim Duncan. 03-lol

As for the team I can't get down on them yet when looking the current factors. The only negative for me right now is TOs. The team, including Lomax, force too many bad passes.

Haha good point.

And as far as turnovers: Penny discusses teaching court vision and passing lanes so it's obvious they work on this. I wonder if the turnovers aren't growing pains and/or part of the process (learning to play faster.) Either way, I picture this improving as we go.

I think most of them are too selfless and it leads to make unnecessary passes. Boogie OTOH if he wants to be a PG, especially at the next level, needs to learn how to read situations better to reduce those bad shots. Precious should realize he can be a perimeter shooter without being a perimeter ball handler. I really hope he is working on his handles because what we see won't fly in the NBA.

I think Penny needs to use more sets that have IM and LT in the high/low post more instead of behind the arc. Some of the things they run are fine in the NBA, but this team doesn't have the right players to do those things IMO.

2-1 in pure road games
0-1 in a near road game, Oregon in Portland
1-0 on a neutral court with NC State

Beat USF and pure road games moves to 3-1, the only loss at a ranked team that was lying in wait. And even then, team almost accidentally stole that one being down 6 with the ball with 3 minutes left, with 2 players still clearly sick

I agree, lose at USF and we have a problem that will take several wins to remedy

And being even younger than other young teams does give our guys more room to grow, let alone they are not making talent errors, they are turning it over and missing free throws.

RE: Youngest team in NCAA
This team needs to learn what is a good shot.

Maurice and Lance, the reason you’re wide open from the 3 is because the other team is begging you to shoot. Please stop.

Lester, you’re a much better shooter off the pass than off the dribble. Find a spot on the arc and wait for Alo or Precious to kick it out.

Alex... keep doing what you’re doing

Precious... keep doing what you’re doing

Tyler... see Lester

The one on one moves and 3’s off the dribble are the same as turnovers. Lance and Maurice’s missed 3’s are just turnovers. Be a little more deliberate on offense in order to get a good shot, not a forced or bad shot. Its not rocket science.

I've never seen him so Haynes might be the best ever for all I know. But when people on a national level thought of the bank shot they thought of Duncan.

Old School Memphis fans associate the bank shot with Doom Haynes. Players are too good now to shoot mid range jumpers... it’s all 3’s all the time... even if you can’t make one.

Trust me, play for play, Doom Haynes was the best I've ever seen.

He could pull up on a dead stop on the fast break and bank it in never touching the rim. It was his shot

Plus I'm guess the 3pt line wasn't instituted yet when he played. And I agree with the latter. Basketball is probably the worst "copycat" game of all sports. Instead of sticking to what you are best at, teams copy what the best teams do even if they don't have the players for it.

Sounds like he'd be a nice 3pt shooter in today's game.

He was good but I wouldn't go that far. He seemed to be somewhat inconsistent. I think he only averaged 12 ppg for his career. It was fun to hear Doom when he shot.

We had a young team preseason when everyone was predicting sweet 16 and final four.

You can't start using that as an excuse now that things are not as bright as some thought.

Refresh my memory didn't we have a player in the preseason that isn't playing for us now.

If Wiseman is at the 5 with Precious at the 4... it wouldn’t matter how inconsistent our guard was... until we played elite teams.

Are we actually the youngest team nationally? Should be but is that officially correct?
