A tale of 2 coaches
Press Release from years past at Wright State.
FAIRBORN —
Wright State University paid former men’s basketball coach Billy Donlon $225,000 as part of the separation agreement both sides signed April 13 following Donlon’s firing in March.
The amount, which is being distributed in 11 monthly payments of $20,454.55, is equal to one year of base salary, even though Donlon had two years remaining on his contract. The separation agreement was obtained by the Dayton Daily News through a public records request.Donlon compiled a record of 109-94 during his six seasons as head coach, including 22-13 last year while leading the Raiders to the Horizon League tournament championship game for the third time in four seasons.
That leads me into Coach K (who I believe has more then 2 years remaining on his contract after this season) with Toledo, does OB have the guts to release him from his contract like AD Grant did to Donlon at WSU did some years ago.

Only if we go 6-12 in the league or so.
He will do what people on this board already have. A guy got hurt off-season... Wah wah. Give him another year.

Edu was a big piece of the puzzle. Take Whittington off of Kent St and they are a different team.
The Flashes are Senior team with 5 on the roster.
Rockets are young with two Seniors and 6 Fr/RsF.
Moss and Rollins, both Guards, are ready to go for next year. Not ready to give up on Coach K or the season yet. Already seeing Maranka's play start to improve.

Why did I know at least one of the two titular coaches would be from Wright State?

The Rockets start two seniors and three juniors. To date, none of the six freshmen has shown that he will be an asset. Not saying that none will, but just having young guys on the team doesn't make the future look bright.

maranka will be good. saunders could be really good or erratic and transfer in a year-who knows. etherington is good enough that they redshirted him even though we kinda need an outside shooter. acunzo was our top recruit and is a total question mark health wise and may need a year on top of that to get into good decent shape. smith has some real potential to play good defense as an upperclassman. it's not like the freshman suck. it's not like the commits for next year aren't really good as 17 year olds.
coach k will not get bought out because he restored a program that was academically unfocused, administered poorly and unethically, and god awful on the court. the reality is that coach k now runs an academically strong, ethical and organized program that is average to good on the court. he needs to keep improving as a professional. fall less often to his coaching weaknesses, have his luck with injuries turn back around. coach k was lucky with injuries in his earlier UT years and unlucky in more recent ones. as for saving the season. guys gotta start having fun playing the game or their displeasure needs to be channelled into not losing.

To be honest I don't have a whole lot of faith that UT would replace him with someone substantially better. Personally, I don't think he's bad enough to fire but not good enough to extend his contract any more unless something changes in a major way.

Why not? There are plenty of good young coaches that would take the UT job (P5 assistants/DII head coaches who consistently get to the NCAA's). We pay a good salary and our facilities are the best in the MAC.

Be careful what you wish for. The last time Mike O’Brien fired a winning basketball coach (Stan Joplin) to try to get over the NCAA Tournament hump, he hired Gene Cross. How confident are you that he would replace
TK with someone who could do significantly better than him?

It's not that there aren't good coaching prospects, UT doesn't have a history of hiring coaches based first and foremost on their performance or potential performance. MOB has a say in who gets hired but it is a committee who has chosen our b-ball coaches in the past. Committees=zebras. The men on those committees build and renovate our athletic facilities. While you and I would look at a candidate's coaching record, they look at the knot in his tie, the direction of its stripes, the part of the hair. They want someone acceptable to hang out with at the country club. Give me the fat guy with a gravy stain on his sweater who can coach the hell out of a basketball team any day.

When I speak on this subject publicly I get shshed. I stand by my post but will leave it at that. People that know what I'm talking about are probably having a chuckle or perhaps wincing.

Eck was a different era..... long before O'Brien.
Cross came from "Notre Dame" so he was a "can't miss" hire at the time...….
