Exclamation Parental recruiting advice requested
My high school senior child is being recruited for football at a local DIII school. Is there anyone on the board that has played, or any parents of a player of college ball, that can give me any words of wisdom???

Would have loved for him to go to South, but he was injured the second game of this season and missed the rest of it. So we are happy with any attention he is getting. He has recovered, it was a foot injury.

Thanks in advance.

Right now it’s nursing, and this school does have a nursing program. I just didn’t know if there were questions we should/need to be asking.

RE: Parental recruiting advice requested
As far as I can tell DIII schools will let just about anyone play that's willing to pay tuition, particularly if its a private school.

Don't mean that as a knock on your kid, but I'd just be more generally wary of any non-scholarship offer.

TXST will play a local DIII school in basketball sometimes and they'll travel like 25 kids to the game. Late in the 2nd half some of these kids get in and you can tell they have no business playing college sports. That said, the starters are usually kids that can play. So there's certainly a big distinction at that level between the kids that play and those that are allowed on the team so they can say they're a "college athlete" just cause the school wants their tuition money.

In that case I would say it depends on what is more important to him:
Playing a sport in college, or focusing on his future career.
Sometimes, kids are lucky enough where they can have both, and get the degree for free. This does not appear to be the case for your son. One option is he could play a year or two and get his basic classes completed, and then decide if he wants to continue playing and pursue a degree offered by that school, or transfer to a school that offers his desired program.

If it's out of state it's not worth it.. I had a few friends put themselves in massive debt with nothing to show for it just to play baseball in college at a d3 school.

Many times its not. I had a chance to play baseball at an NAIA school in Arkansas. It was a good private school, that offered my degree, but I knew I would only receive minimal financial support for playing baseball, and the school was expensive. I had already been offered a full academic scholarship with a $1500-$2k stipend a year to go to stAte. So, I gave up my delusional hopes of making it to the MLB, and went to stAte.

This was at a liberal arts college in Iowa guy racked up 50K in student loan debt transferred to UL and had to start college all over again ..

I lived in Iowa for 3 years. They've got quite a few liberal arts colleges. And they're not cheap. Grinell is probably the most expensive one.

Grinnell has an insane endowment. Like $2 billion.

RE: Parental recruiting advice requested
I’ve seen the same thing. We were watching the DIII and DII championship games a few weeks ago and even my wife could see the difference in play between those two levels. I think he could have gotten some attention from a DII school had he not been injured. We live out in the country, he goes to a small high school that regularly goes 2-8 every season, so there isn’t much attention being paid to the team. Also, no athletes from last season that would have had coaches watching. He was getting attention his sophomore year, we had a few senior guys that season that had schools looking, then we had a coaching change and not sure where that attention went.

Anyway, the kid makes the grades, will be getting academic scholarship opportunities, and he wants to continue playing, at some level. He has a couple past teammates that have played DIII sports, and they had a good experience with it. He’s had other DIII schools look, that he has told he wasn’t interested in their school.

Birmingham Southern is the school now. He wanted to go to UAB for nursing, and Birmingham Southern runs their nursing program through UAB, so he’d really get the best of what he wants. And if things were to go excellently, he could always transfer to UAB in the future and play there, if there was an opportunity.(Big jump between DIII and FBS). He was happy with just being a student at UAB, already accepted into the nursing program, when BSC came calling. The school are about 3 miles apart, if that far.

Needs to decide how much he loves football ... what I mean by that, playing DIII football will put a lot of stress, wear & tear on the body but for very little to no money. If playing football in college is his passion, then great. However, looking at his future, he may be better served to attend a higher level of education at another university. He still has the ability to walk on if he so chooses, but unless you have a scholarship offer from DII or better, I would make my college choice based on the academic side of things. That's just my 2 cents

That’s the thing, even academically he can’t really go wrong with BSC. Again, if he stays with nursing he will still attend UAB, one of the best medical in the southeast. He already has academic scholarship offers in place at UAB if he decides to go there, just need to get those in place at BSC, where he hasn’t even applied to yet. Coaches at BSC seem to want him pretty bad, wonder if they have any persuasion for the academic scholarship???

Slightly different perspective. My daughter is in her senior year of BSN nursing school attending Coastal College of Georgia in Brunswick. To get a feel for the academic rigor take a look at the NCLEX success rate of graduates for the preferred college. If the number is well in to the 90s particularly high 90s beware. He will have zero time for football. Fortunately my daughter has moved along fine but over half of the original 60 students have failed to make the cut. 27 remain. I find this a bit unfortunate for those who would have a better than a 90% chance of passing the NCLEX not given the opportunity to take the test. Coastal has the highest success rate in Georgia but I wouldn't recommend anyone putting their child through what these kids are going through. BRUTAL!

The way the program works with BSC is he will attend there for 7 semesters, then transfer to UAB to complete school for a dual degree. UAB NCLEX success rate is 95.7%04-jawdrop UAB is the 13th ranked nursing school I’m the country.

Has he mentioned his choice of major to the coaches recruiting him? My brother was bring recruited by P5 schools so obviously it's different, but when he would mention that he was thinking about going the engineering route, a lot of the coaches tried to steer him away from it, which was obviously a red flag.

Yah similar. He'll be in great shape to go forward with NP or maybe nurse anesthetist but no way will he have time for football. Forget it! With incomes well into the 6 figures it'll be worth it. Good luck!

He has told the coaches about his desires to go into nursing. He does want to be anesthetist. The coaches have been encouraging for that. That may be the advantage of DIII, during the season, he does have the football schedule and work, but when football season is over, he doesn’t have the off season demands like in higher levels, so he has that time for school and studying and such.

I’ll keep you guys posted.
