Beat Maryland (and Georgia Tech) this year.

5-2 vs B10 teams.

He is one of the G5 founding fathers when it comes to slaying the Big Ten.

Maryland and GT were both 3-9. Temple beat Maryland the year prior when they were 5-7. He did just we he did at NIU...lost OOC to a winning G5 and P5. Won vs 2 losing P5's. Won conference play. Sound familiar? This is exactly how I described his time at NIU. And it's not an insult. It's just what he does. If his Temple bosses and fans are happy that's all that matters.

Why is Carey the only former coach we can't talk about? He was HC for several seasons and was the most recent coach before Hammock. When Carey became coach we compared him to Doeren and Kill and Novak.

Oh gawd. My apologies for my involvement of turning this into a Rod Carey vs Hammock thread.

Back to business. The incoming QB has great size, hopefully he can play if Bowers goes out for an extended period of time again. I hope the offensive line improves, so Bowers isn't scrambling for his life and I hope Eidsness doesn't call any run plays for him.

No one is upset...why are you apologizing? Pretty sure keeping this thread about the 4th string qb who is here just for practice reps isn’t going to last long. No film. No stats. I guess we can discuss his height? As long as it’s civil who cares what the topic is.

It seems lately, all we've been doing is making every topic Pro Carey or Anti Carey.

How did coach Carey seep into this thread?? Always like talking about HOT ROD, but what did he have to do with my post??...

The term getting to the "next level" implies you need to improve on the level you are currently at. That would be Carey's level.

The board needs to just deal with the fact that Carey will be a relevant part of discussions here for a season or two. If not just to learn from his mistakes or analyze his success/failures. Massive success in conference. Big struggles OOC. Why? Hammock is suggesting he will have success OOC. How? If people can put aside these little personal battles and just discuss the X's & O's of the last 5 years it may help reveal some keys to this "next level". And next level is what Hammock is promoting, not the posters here. What will change compared to the last 5 years? Recruiting? He is recruiting at the same level as Carey(3-5th in MAC). So much of the board says ratings don't matter anyway. That's a case where discussing Carey is relevant to Hammock. Same level recruits with different results....how?

Yea I mean, former coaches are never off the table as a topic.

It would be a miracle for a MAC team to get to the next level, unless you mean getting the Access Bowl which is at least possible if you have a good team. I was okay with how we were doing with Carey except I wanted to at least provide some competition in a bowl game. Hopefully we can get back to winning the MAC and getting the occasional win OOC against somebody decent.

Agreed. I’m not sure what exactly “the next level” is for a Mac team Either As there are inherent restrains. Consistently competing for the Mac championship won’t necessarily do it as we’ve seen. I believe It has to be done in tandem with A Consistent increase in student/fan involvement and attendance growth though I understand that in itself could be less likely than a return to the orange bowl. A lot of the excitement for hammock I believe came from the perception that he could drive that involvement and outreach better than his predecessor.

As a half hearted attempt to stay on topic. Welcome to NIU Andrew!

RE: QB Transfer!!!!!!!
Well stated...we were at the next level...Novack / Kill / Doreen and coach Carey brought us there. Hammock comes in promises taking us to " the next level" ...but we were out the nex level. We took a step down...I am surprised he did not embrace our past, considering he was part of it as a player. I feel it's highly unlikely with or without Hammock we will ever get back to the level we were out..truly was the golden age for Northern football..a lot of people, here took our success for granted

At the risk of being banned, just like you're entitled to your opinion, there are plenty of us who see things differently. "Golden Age" for Huskie football spanned from Novak to Kill to Doreen when NIU's bowl record was technically 4-3 as opposed to the 0-6 post-season record attributed to Carey. Those first three coaches had positive relations and respect with the media, Carey did not. Hot rod used Doreen's recruits to remain at that level. Whether or not we "ever get back to the level" we were at pre-Carey is debatable. For those of you wanting to celebrate 2019 wins over Maryland or Georgia Tech, please go to the Temple site. The victory over the Terps worth celebrating happened in 2003.

RE: QB Transfer!!!!!!!
So we added a new QB for depth under the new coach, whom we cannot name, partly because we apparently lose a QB that was brought in under the previous coach - who also shall remain nameless. Amazing how these recruits materialize out of thin air without a HC to bring them in.

You’re not gonna get banned for an opinion. The mods are not someone’s parents you call when someone is being mean to you. Pretty sure keeping things civil and troll free is their main job. Not topic selection.

Novak’s golden age fluctuated plenty. Hypothetically had Novak been the only coach the last 25 years we’d still have had a couple of 5 win seasons. We’d be slightly better off but the 10 win seasons are tougher these days having those money games. And some of that success is just catching a P5 on a down year. Our “level” is as much a reflection of the university itself as it is who is coaching. Takes a great coach to change that. And great coaches last about 2 years before they leave.

Doeren is a good coach but he inherited more than anyone. Harnish AND Lynch, Not too shabby. He brought in Hare so he did his part.

This is stupid.

Carey had more success playing the Power 5 than any coach in the history of the conference lol

2-9?

5-2 vs B1G. One loss was by 7 to #1 Ohio St. Rod Carey is the model all G5 coaches copy when pioneering Big Ten upsets.

The only P5 wins(4) I see are Iowa/Purdue(2013),
Northwestern(2014), Nebraska(2017)
Losses to FSU(2012, 2018), Arkansas(2014),
OSU(2015), BC(2015,2017), Duke(2017), Iowa(2018),
Utah(2018).
No P5 opponents in 2016.
If that is correct, Amstutz had more P5 wins with:
Minnesota(2001), Pitt(2003), Kansas(2006),
Iowa St(2007), Michigan(2008).

I assume he's including Maryland, whom Carey beat as HC of Temple.
