I saw the final score and immediately came to this thread because I thought someone was about spot on. Pretty damn close

Got in late and didn't see the game but I did catch the end of Northeastern vs Hofstra. Hofstra pulls out the win in front of a huge crowd of about 300 and that is being generous. The CAA is not a good basketball conference and that is being generous as well.

Dodd isn't being put in a position to succeed. He's not a true post player. He'd be a great 4, if we could ever find someone other than him and Linnsen to play the 5. If you go look back at some of his highlights from high school, I always thought he reminded me of Addison Spruill on the offensive end.

Spruill was a 3 man who could guard a 4 but was not a inside guy who could finish inside. I saw him play a ton in HS and he played the 2 in HS and of course jumped center ! I saw Dood last year in the all star game at Hoggard, very athletic but not skilled. He looks better now but has a ways to go IMO.

I don't agree with the assessment he's "not skilled". He's Raw for sure, but he certainly has "skills" to go with the athleticism.

I agree with Hoops on this one. Also, I think Dodd could play the 3 on the offensive side of the ball like Spruill did under Keatts. He has the skills to face the basketball, put the ball on the floor, and score. Posting him up and having him try to muscle up against a player that's 6 inches taller than him like we were doing last night isn't going to work. He definitely has a lot of room to grow as a player, but I think his ceiling is as high as any of the 3 freshman.

What exactly are his basketball skills? Can he step out and shoot the 3 ball, handle the ball with both hands equally well and finish with either hand, post up and score, shoot free throws at 80% plus? Is he a good passer/ Break the press. I say no to all of these and its pretty obvious he has a long ways to go be skilled. Gifted for sure and plays hard but not ready for major minutes. In college basketball or any level really you are what you can guard and I don't think he is ready to guard on the perimeter against a 3 man. He's a 4 man now with limited skills.

He's actually ahead of Cacok as a freshman. But we all know Cacok made a huge jump from his freshman to sophomore year. I'm not expecting anything like that from Dodd. But I do see potential to be a decent force on the court.

I agree and I see him as a totally different player than Cacok who might step out on the court and show some skills as he gets better. Against JMU they had him playing inside vs the the 5 and the guy was huge. I don't see how that helps him at all but they are so thin in the frontcourt he has to do some of that.

Playing Dodd in the post is just as astronomical of a coaching miscue as trying to force Cacok to be a post player.
Problem is, against WM... we have no big bodies outside of Linssen to deal with Knight, and the even larger Van Vliet. If the staff keeps forcing Dodd to play in the post against other teams it's a massive problem.

Until we can, or if we do, get bigger bodies who do you suggest we play there? Even at only 6'6", he's the strongest body we have down low. And, in 18 games, he has averaged 15 minutes a game has 16 blocks.

Yeah, Dodd is playing in the post as necessity. It doesn't showcase all of his strengths as a player, which is why he's been up and down this season.

I agree that we have no other body to put there. That was my point in mentioning the "Problem is..." portion of my post.
I also realize where that topic leads... recruiting, etc.

He has played out of position some this year and it also exposed his weaknesses offensively. He has to be able to hit a 15 ft jump shot and put the ball on the floor against size,he has not shown an ability to do that. He will be an undersized 4 IMO but has a ways to go to compete at this level. He has the physical size and athleticism but needs to spend a lot of time with a ball in his hand trying to get better. A summer spent in the weight room and skills practice time could be huge for this guy.

Weight room? Sure he's going to get stronger, but this kid is stronger at his size than any freshman we have had in a long time. That was one of the things that surprised me most when i saw him in person.

He's played out of position MOST of the season. Also, when has he been put in a position to hit a 15 foot jump shot or put the ball on the floor?... When teams run zone against us, why doesn't CB try to get him the ball at the free throw line and attack the rim while facing the basket? Instead swings the ball around the 3 point line and forces it to him on the block. While I agree he has a way to go in his development, I don't think he's being used correctly. Dodd is going to be a good college basketball player, I have no doubt about that.

Easy now. The Mullet seems to want to blame everyone BUT the coaching staff for things.

I think Dodd has a real chance to be a stud but he is gonna need to put in some serious work in the off season. At 6'6 he is undersized even for the CAA and has to get better with the ball. You can't blame CB for everything but he does take the blame for the roster and the fact that Dodd has to play the post when he is clearly not big enough. He is strong but working in the weight room will only make him better able to handle more minutes. If he could step out and hit the 3 consistently he would be a beast!
