Unofficial WBB Thread
Some talk of the EMU women arose, so why not have an EMU WBB thread?

Couple of thoughts of mine:

1). Their last four games have been quite good. Margins of 24, 9, 14 and 17 against D-I teams. That's usually a positive.

https://emueagles.com/sports/womens-basketball/schedule

2). This team is a very young team. I see no seniors on it:

https://emueagles.com/sports/womens-basketball/roster

3). Combs has played only 6 games and is averaging over 20 PPG. She has had games of 29 and 32 points in her short EMU career.

https://emueagles.com/sports/womens-bask...ombs/12422

I suggest the team WITH Combs is very, very different than the team without her.

This is a team to watch...

BTW, talking about 'watching': Someone, I think Combs (or Stanley???) made two behind the back pass assists in the 4th quarter Saturday. Never saw it before in a women's game. 04-cheers

RE: Unofficial WBB Thread
Hey! Thanks Steve!

I feel like I'm one of the few who tries to watch as many WBB games as I can too.

-Like I mentioned in the other thread... I take the last four with a grain of salt. Those teams have a combined record of 14-43... with half of those wins being Bowling Greens. They let all four of them hang around too long, and ultimately there will be teams that pull out wins when the competition gets better.

-The team is not only young, but they're missing a few really good pieces. From what I recall, Abiola was freshman of the year from wherever she transferred from, but has had injury issues. Hopefully she's back.

-Combs is the real deal. She's like watching a more efficient Danielle Minot from the last few seasons.

With Combs leading the charge I think we are a MUCH better team, but we still have a lot to prove. After the next five MAC games (Kent, Ball State, Miami, Buffalo & CMU) we will know what we are made of.

Thanks,

The one thing I wish our center had better conditioning (I'm trying to be polite on a public forum).

If she was in tip top shape, she could be a force around the basket and her speed and quicks would be much better.

She has the height to be a force.

I get it.

More realistically I wish we could get steady production out of the three centers we use. The problem becomes we get an A+ game from one, a B- game from another, and a non-existent game from the third.

Tonight was the first win I’m allowing myself to get excited about. Kent State has beaten us with less talent each of the last few seasons, and getting them at their places is no small feat.

Areanna Combs is even better than I could have imagined. She is a game changer and a legitimate MAC Player of the Year candidate.

I have not seen the women play this season. Could someone describe their style of play?

Do they run or play a balanced tempo?
Do they have a structured offensive strategy?
Do they play man to man defense, zone or both??

-They are much better when they get out and run. Better at executing sets than running an offense.
-Offensive strategy is much improved with Combs in the thick of things. She's a go-to playmaker that makes everyone else around her better. Without her we struggle to find consistency on the offensive end of the floor.
-Defense is a mixed bag. We will pressure and drop back to zone, we will half court pressure in man-to-man. When going right (like last night) it is fun to watch.

My biggest concern is we make a lot of little mistakes. Against Kent State and Bowling Green it doesn't hurt us. But against the likes of Central, Ohio and Buffalo those will cost us.

EMU women are playing hard, rebounding like tigers, but shooting... not too good.

They should be running BSU out of their arena. Leading by 6. Combs got into foul trouble hurting the offense.

EMU shooting 24% at the half. Poor shooting seems to be an EMU thing...

RE: Unofficial WBB Thread
We continue to be the second-smartest team on the court no matter what, and ultimately it haunts us.

It isn't just the fact that we have a tendency to foul... We make horrible decisions and foul 70 feet from the basket, and then get frustrated the call was made on us.

That said: the end of the Ball State game had a couple of REALLY tough calls go against us. The offensive foul call on Stanley, in particular, changed the game. The BSU player was in the restricted area when Stanley went up for the layup. Contact was made outside of the area, but in my mind that can't be an offensive foul: the defensive player slid in under the offensive player.

EMU is absolutely killing MIA. MIA means Miami missing in action.

My first women's game of the season was last night. Very impressed. Maybe the men's team need to take some pointers from the women in regards to unselfish play and shooting.

Last night's game was a joy to watch.

This was the most complete game they had all season. No drop off whatsoever, and kept the pedal to the metal until the final buzzer.
I'll echo what I said before: Combs is a legitimate Player of the Year candidate.

When we play like we did last night, we will have an upper-level MAC team.

Now... can we do it on the road at Buffalo this weekend?

And even more so... this team deserves our attention! Next Wednesday they play the Chips and we need to get as many people in the Convo as possible!

RE: Unofficial WBB Thread
I don't think most EMU fans realize how good EMU WBB can be next year. Consider these two facts:

1). There are no seniors on this year's team,

2). EMU has TWO impact transfers sitting out, Abiola and Skanes. Both were very successful at their previous universities before transterring. Abiola is sitting out injured and Skanes is a transfer sitout.

https://emueagles.com/sports/womens-basketball/roster

Our last FB/BB champion was 2011/12 WBB. The next champion will be WBB and it could be 2020/21.

I hope so. MAC is a great WBB conference though. Consistently is a multi-bid Tourney conference. Would love to see them make it!
