What's happening to UVU tonight? Looks like a complete collapse.

I think Blunder Dan has taken the Lopes as far as he can. Time for GCU to open up the purse strings and find a real college coach.

I think if Dan losses to Chicago State we will see GCU canning Dan mid season and see Menzies take the reins the rest of the year

Although Aggie fans have had their complaints about Menzies in-game coaching, there is no denying he is a very good recruiter and overall probably a better head coach than Thunder Dan. I don't think he could out coach Jans but he might be able to out recruit him. Menzies did bring in some of the more memorable Aggie players... Wendell McKines, Troy Gillenwater, Chili Nephawe, Sim Bhullar, Pascal Siakam. Getting those type of players to GCU would be a Lopes fan's wet dream.

Did the CBU-CSUB game on ESPN3 the regular CSUB announcers? They didn't seem all that bad. At least they were talking about the game. The last GCU home game I watched, the announcers ignored the game completely for minutes at a time to read promotional scripts and to let Colangelo ramble.

With the season we are having, it’s entirely possible Barry and Scotty needed a break from watching the massacre and relished having a guest for a few minutes. Especially during the UNI game.

That being said they try to emulate a professional game environment. NBA style graphics, a sideline reporter, separate half time/post game color analyst from the primary two broadcasters, etc. Like the school or hate them, the quality is good and they are marketing experts who excel at shameless self promotion. Especially if you pardon Barry’s climax-esque outbursts when someone scores. Keeeeeeyontaaaaaaay Vernon!!!!!! I won’t forget those games...

Yeah, the GCU guys do have those professional announcer voices. Our UTRGV guys have day jobs, one is an Asst AD but the other is a volunteer from the liberal arts dean's office staff. At least they're both hardcore fans from way back when we were the Broncs.

I've enjoyed the UTRGV announcers. You can tell they have passion for the program, without sounding like homers at all. I think they're good.

The reason I think NMSU has good TV and radio announcers is because they are not complete homers. They favor NMSU in their broadcasts but they call the game's play-by-play fairly even. They want NMSU to win but they admit when the other team gets a bad call or missed call by the refs. That is not always the case with some of the other announcers within the WAC (and nationally as well). Many of those announcers are basically rooting for their respective team on the radio (or TV) beyond reason...HOMERS. And, that gets annoying to hear during a game broadcast by a opposing fans. It also makes them seem to be less knowledgeable in the game of basketball.

DM isn't going to lose his job at GCU. He has won 20 or more games the last four seasons. He isn't going to be fired for having one bad year.

I’m a Lopes fan but even I know the 20 win seasons should be taken with a grain of salt. Mostly from bottom tier teams in the MEAC, SWAC, and Sunbelt. Last year we didn’t have one signature win to hang our hat on. Just several really close losses. Mental victories don’t mean much anymore.

I’d rather see a few more losses and play challenging teams than have inflated records only to get disappointed in the end. We’ve done well in the Conference until this year.

Most concerning thing to me is that we can’t keep our younger straight out of high school guys on the squad. Several are leaving. Our players aren’t developing. The new guys are all transfers and they haven’t really gelled this year. It shows.

Although I tend to agree with you, most mid-major programs would not fire a coach with Majerle's record. Most ADs would look past one bad season. However, Majerle's situation really depends on how badly the Administration wants results. GCU aspires to becoming the next Gonzaga. And, there has been a lot of money put forth toward that cause. GCU has now been eligible for NCAA tournament play for three years and running. And, Majerle has now been at GCU seven seasons... and based off his current results he is no closer to getting GCU an NCAA tournament bid. The Lope fans and boosters are starting to getting restless. Majerle really needs a major infusion of talent to turn the tide next season. His leash is getting short every year... 20 wins or not. Its' about winning the WAC and going to the NCAA tourney.

Gillenwater was lazy and wouldn’t be able to play under Jans because of that. Chili was a big physical specimen but raw. I’d take Ivan over Sim. Sim was just a big presence, Ivan is a threat. Lofton was better than all these guys except Siakam. Now Menzies did hit a home run with him. Jans recruits basketball plays Menzies did not.

GCU would have been tough if they had the Fisher and Frayer kids eligible. That is what hurt them this season. Plus, this is only GCU's third year being eligible for the NCAA Tournament. But DM will be back next year and probably the year after. I don't see them firing him.

Calm down now. Wendell McKines is #2 all-time in rebounds and scored over 1,500 career points. The guy was nearly averaging 19/11 as a senior. JJ was good but he wasn't Wendell. Gillenwater was a four-star top 100 recruit, McCants is good but he will never put up the points Gillenwater scored. Menzies did recruit some good players but for the most part brought a lot of raw players that he had to develop. Wendell McKines will be in the NMSU hall of fame some day. Gillenwater would have scored over 2,000 points if he played his entire sophomore season and came back for his senior year. He averaged 12 PPG as a freshman, 14 PPG as a sophomore, and 19 PPG as a junior. He would have had a monster senior year if he came back for it.

Umm, you do realize Wendell McKines averaged 18.7 ppg and 10.7 rpg his senior year and led the WAC in scoring and rebounding. He averaged a double-double. And, that was in a WAC that had Nevada, Utah State, Hawaii, Fresno State, and Louisiana Tech in the conference. He was also the WAC tournament MVP. The reason he did not make it in the NBA was because he was undersized for the position he played but unlike Jemerio, Wendell did not have a guard type skillset (ballhandling & facilitating). McKines was truly an undersized power forward (6'6ish, 230-lbs). However, McKines could shoot the three much better than Jemerio.

As for Gillenwater, he underachieved (and yes lazy). However, he was one of the most offensively gifted power forwards NMSU has ever had. He was a big reason NMSU almost upset Michigan State. Keep in mind, Gillenwater averaged 18.9 ppg, 6.3 rpg, 74.9 FT%, made 37 threes, and had 26 block shots as a Junior. McCants is averaging 8.7 ppg, 5.3 rpg, 34.5 FT%, made 17 threes, and 9 blocks to date also as a Junior. Gillenwater was a dominant player.

As for Sim Bhullar and Chili Nephawe, they both created match up problems for opposing teams. Neither would fit in Jans system because they are too slow. But Sim and Chili could help a lot of good coaches win game in the right system.

I’ll give you that. McKines has always been one of my favorites and he will go down as one of the best Aggies to every play. Gillenwater was really gifted but was held back with attitude and laziness. Add Siakam and Menzies had 3 good recruits in a decade of recruiting. In my opinion in that long at a program that doesn’t classify as a very good recruiter.

On a side note, the WAC was a million times more better with those teams when McKines played. So I don’t get when some people try to claim that the WAC now is just as good as the Mountain West.

GCU fired Russ Pennell in favor of Dan Majerle. Since 2015, Majerle and Pennell (coaching at Central Arkansas) have the exact same number of…

NCAA Tournament Appearances (0)
Conference Tournament Championships (0)
Conference Regular Season Championships (0)
Power Conference Victories (0)
Top 25 Victories (0)
Top 25 Rankings (0)

Sure, GCU fans gotten to see more meaningless wins than Central Arkansas fans and it wasn't quite as boring a brand of basketball to watch (Russ ball is excruciatingly slow/bad), but GCU basketball is no closer to the originally stated goals than when we began. By in large, the Majerle-era has been a rocking chair: It's given everyone something to do, but we still haven't gotten anywhere.
