RE: Football 2020 Schedule
We really need to convince AR St it is in their best interest to play us at Memphis every year (or UAB or USM) . We don't need to be going to Jonesboro. We sure don't need to be going to Mobile, Monroe or San Antonio. I'd rather play Boise or San Diego St home & home or a low level P5 like Vandy, Northwestern, or one of the ACC schools than these Sunbelt schools H/H.

And before I get the recruiting retort, there was no one at Mobile or Monroe. Hard to impress a recruit with that sort of atmosphere. Does more harm than good.

I think the primary reason is a personal (selfish?) one. Fans want to see the "name" opponent.

I believe the argument is that we go into those areas and can combine a recruiting trip with a game weekend. We allow local recruits AND COACHES & FAMILIES to come see us in their own backyard.

I don't really know how effective it is, but Norvell is a believer in it.

That's what I thought, but that's not the angle. The angle is, you convince a prospect you are looking at that "we will play a game in San Antonio so your mamma can drive to at least one game in her lifetime and see you play."

RE: Football 2020 Schedule
Recruiting is absolutely the reason. We had dozens of recruits lined up for GA State before it was canceled. We have had quite a few at each of those road games according to people that were there.

While I would trade games with some teams for those, they are invaluable in recruiting.

here's a perfect chance to upgrade the 2021 schedule but are we willing to swap a FCS home game for a buy game with USC?

It would definitely be worth pursuing. But, would USC have the gonads to play Memphis right now? Probably not if they talk to their cross town rival. Maybe they are hoping more for an easier G5 team.

I would think our old OC Clay Helton would like the chance to replace a FCS team with Memphis.

plus, if they want to avoid doing a 'buy game' they could always make it a home-home with the game in Memphis being played in either 2024 or 2026 when they have an opening.

It's crazy to think that a coach on a hot seat would rather play a 12-2 Memphis team rather than playing an FCS buy game. I know they only have 3 OOC games in the PAC 12, so I highly doubt they would want to spend one on us.

(01-12-2020 06:56 PM)MvETigers Wrote:  I won't quote, but that post is BS. Everyone in the AAC might have "bought it" but how did it help us?! We went 1-8 in those games. It killed Houston's season to the point they folded. While you are looking up previous records, just how many AAC Champions have played two P5 teams with winning records in the year they won the AAC?!!

Regardless of your facts, the AAC is one of only two conferences to have FIVE 10 win teams. Memphis played FIVE 10 win teams this season, we went 4-1. Yes, they can say that previous years, our wins came against non-winning teams, NOT this year! That's why it is the best season Memphis has ever had. 12 wins, but 4 against 10 win teams, beat multiple ranked teams including 4 Playoff ranked wins!

Why people want to degrade our team and conference blows my mind. If we got paid 5x what we make each year, I wonder how much better the team and conference for that matter could be.

The AAC was ranked as the 5th best conference this season, ahead of the ACC. You can quote previous year numbers all you want. Everything points to this season as our team being very good, our conference being very good and next year looks to be the same. Cincy will be good, so will UCF. Houston could rebound. Navy will likely be Navy. Not sure if SMU will slip or not, but Memphis will be right back in that mix.

You’re absolutely correct!! We played a good schedule with good teams and had the best year in school history!

Just for the record, I am a graduate of Memphis State and have been a game attending fan since Crump Stadium.

I have been happy as a lark with our football program these past few years. So much excitement for a change.

I am friends with some former players and we get a big kick out of bragging that we are now a football school.

My comments are in regards to our weak OOC football and basketball scheduling philosophies over the past several years. I am a proponent of stronger OOC games and don't mind saying so. That has zip to do with degrading our team.

As for our conference, it is what it is. I'm glad we had such good results in the overall conference this past season. I hope we can sustain that.

I also despise UT, but I have no qualms about giving their conference props for being strong.

In CUSA and the first couple of years of the AAC you could argue about the benefits of scheduling tougher OOC. Now you really can't. IF there was a spot up for grabs in a NY6 bowl and another in the next 4 highest ranked bowl games, our entire philosophy changes.

With one spot, you can't really afford to play a top 10 team OOC, especially on the road, the way that Cincinnati did. If you lose that game and one more you will lose the bid to a 1 loss AAC team, and even possibly a 1 loss Boise team that doesn't play anyone, or an undefeated Appalachian State type.

With two spots available then you absolutely go for it and play a top 5-10 P5 team if you can get it scheduled. Win that game early in the season and you are in the playoff conversation until you lose. If you lose that game and one more, you still get to play in a high profile bowl with a high payout.

So with 1 spot available, you play a weak OOC but the conference schedule is tough. There are at least 5-6 teams that will be really good, that can beat anyone on any given day.

Looking at the absolute best case scenario for next season; we beat a couple of top 20 teams in the conference and then go up against an undefeated top 10 UCF or Cincinnati in the season finale.

It probably won't be good enough to make the playoff, but after the AAC Championship game you are going to be in the top 6-8 of the rankings.

Stammers, Most of what you say actually makes a bit of sense.

However, the odds are long for us to continue to make a bowl like the one we just had. And if you don't, the list of AAC affiliated bowls is less than attractive.

In a perfect world, I would wish for us to play a "challenge bowl" early in the season against any top team that would play us. That would offer prestige and big time competition.

Of course, that's a long shot but so is the Cotton Bowl.

Just need a wheeler dealer to set it up!

I don't think that is true at all. A lot of the talking heads were saying that a 2 loss Cincinnati team deserved the bid ahead of 1 loss Boise.

In the good old days (a couple of years ago) there would often only be 1 non P5 team ranked at the beginning of the season. Because us and Cincinnati along with Boise have shown continuity with results and recruiting, it's a different game now.

I would think that us, Cincinnati and UCF deserve to be ranked to start next season. We ended the season with more teams ranked than the ACC, PAC12 and Big 12.

Times are changing.

Here's my scheduling philosophy. Look at the schedule when it's released, decide which games I can travel to attend, and then pull for the Tigers in all of them.

Nooker 2000,
I wish u hadn't posted the longterm schedule, this might be the weakest in the country
I thought there might be some improvement over the next couple of yrs in the OOC
Hopefully the new A.D. can work some magic and drop a few CUPCAKES and add a couple of decent teams.
A call to Norvell and Fuente would be in order. Please Tiger Nation complain about this B.S. every chance u get
Looks like the tommy west model. Maybe we could ask Ripp to put a decent schedule together for us, at least see if he'd be so kind to give us a couple of games at ucla

In light of the AAC Championship and trip to the Cotton Bowl, this might be the dumbest thing I have read on the internet today... and I read a Pelosi speech.

Our schedule improves by over 14 wins next season... and we played 4 teams with 10 wins or more last year.

When we scheduled Missouri, the were winning the East. When we scheduled Miss State they were the third team in the West. Troy had been on a five year streak of 9+ wins. Arkansas keeps the streak of P5 teams, plus we will likely try to add a second on more than one of those years.

Somebody at least put a call in to Clay Helton,
U never know, he might say yes and forget about the home and home
Go to L.A. have a nice time and bring a role of dalla Bill's for the homeless or hand out Tiger T Shirts
Blue could take over the city, just tell them here's two bucks, but u gotta wear this shirt to get it, they will immediately put on the shirt and they normally leave them on till they fall off.
TIGER NATION takes over L.A., win the game, all the Tiger Blue.what a recruiting tool
