The average newspaper reader is getting days older by the hour, but those are the folks that still depend on the daily newspaper and local TV to get most of their information. They're not online and never will be. Eventually that cohort will die out and with nobody to replace them, the newspaper as we know it will follow suit. How the companies adapt to that is the key. Right now, it's very poorly.

I guess you would, you seem to spend all day looking at a computer! Although I'm sure wasting time now on one ...!

The correct way to adapt is to close shop, liquidate, and distribute the cash to the shareholders. The incorrect was is what they are doing now... burning through the cash and lines of credit to keep the shop running until it is time to file bankruptcy and there is nothing left for the shareholders.

I know this season has been disappointing but it doesn't mean we have to be jerks to each other. We're still all monarchs.

The VP has been profitable throughout this entire process of cuts.

But something is still better than nothing, which is why newspapers were so resistant to go all-in on online. They weren't making nearly as much on the print product as they used to, but print advertising is way more profitable than online. They knew their audience was dying, but better to hold on to that for as long as they could than abandon them in favor of a format that may never pay the bills, given how easy it is to find information online without having to pay for it.

Tribune stock has been doing as well as it has for the past 12 months. Their products may be suffering for it, but stockholders are not unhappy with its performance.

Exactly. They are cannibalizing themselves (or at least their newspapers) to get there, and eventually they'll squeeze that last drop of blood from the stone, but there's a reason the hedge fund is still keeping the lights on even as the office underneath gets emptier and emptier.

If you're in your 70s or 80s and you haven't been online, you're not going to start now. That's the newspaper reader of 2020. That's largely the only reason you can still have a newspaper in your hand if you so chose.

There is still value in the job that local newspapers do. There has got to be a way for good local news with a local perspective reported by good local reporters to be profitable. I feel like we just haven't gotten there because local newspapers were too arrogant for too long to make the necessary adjustments to get there.

I get it. Certainly that age bracket is technologically behind. Im assuming that is a small portion of ODUs fanbase, that that age bracket is not posting on here, and that Mac is not actually 70 years old.

You would assume wrong. Look around at the games. Predominately old folks like me. I still work so have to somewhat keep up with technology. 71 and going strong. I can post here and Twitter, but still prefer news paper and face to face

Newspaper Buys Subscribers iPads

I'm not saying that this is the way that Trib is going to save their papers but it is something they should consider. I'm 43 and subscribe to The Pilot and Washington Post. I only pick up the hard copies to put them in the recycling bin. I read both papers daily on my iPad, usually before I get out of bed. My 78-year-old dad reads The Pilot on his iPad as well. If they did go down this road I wish they would copy the Washington Post app and ditch the awful thing they recently switched to.

During my last tenure at the Pilot, they tried out a tablet-focused product called Evening Pilot. It included something like five stories that were formatted with tablets in mind, along with the normal website. Very few people bought in and it died quickly and quietly.

The idea of tablet as new newspaper has been around a while and tested in places, but a lot of people who want to read their news online don't want to read it in newspaper format. The Pilot still has an electronic version of the paper using Olive software, which is how I still read it from D.C., but how many others do is beyond me.

The way to make it profitable is to put it on the internet, get followers, likes, and/or clicks, and get people and/or companies to pay you for a shout out or an ad. Independent journalism and investigations is the wave of the future. You can make money as a one-man shop.

To me, content is the problem. Even up to a few months ago I was reading The Pilot on the web every day. Now there is basically no new content. If I go to the site everyday, I see the same 8 articles and like 2 new ones every day. The content is just terrible at this point. I can't imagine why anyone who doesn't have an interest in reading articles about a very specific thing, like ODU for me, would pay for the content that is being provided.

I wish I knew the answer. I subscribe to a few newspapers (read online LOL) and I scan through them for work related info but what Im interested in reading is content like The Athletic. Or if a quick trip to reddit gives me an update on whats happening.

Just when I thought the VP was giving ODU better coverage, their was nothing in today's paper about the men's last season game tonight.

Got my subscription renewal yesterday and the rate increased by nearly 30%. I called to cancel today and they agreed to honor the previous rate.
Also realized that they are charging an exorbitant amount for those glossy magazine inserts that come just about every month. The extra charge for those just gets applied to the account so the "3 month" subscription was coming about every 2 months. To hide the scheme, they don't show any details on the bill, just the total due. Their billing practices are unethical.

Hey, I'm 74 and have a Master's in Computer Science, so I kind of resent the comments about the "elderly" being technology challenged. My wife likes to get the sales flyers in the Pilot, so a couple of years back we converted to a combined Sunday/Wednesday and on-line subscription. It completely meets our needs at an economical cost.
