I think they'd shut it down before it got to that point. Local news is a differentiator and really the only reason you go to your local newspaper over your national news and sports websites.

I remember (shortly before my first newspaper layoff) being told that in the end, the national and very small publications would survive and in some cases thrive, but everyone in the middle was in trouble. The Washington Post and The New York Times are doing great and have really handled the pivot to online, and there's always going to be a market for the country weekly papers filled with chicken dinner and middle school volleyball journalism. But papers like the Pilot, the DP, the Times-Dispatch, the Roanoke News and so forth, they're struggling to tread water.

I think at this point they've long gone past the point of cutting fat and are ripping into muscle. The hedge fund buying in was never going to be a good sign because they're in it to milk the last drop of blood from the stone. Once they get what they want, they'll offload it ... whatever *it* is by that point.

RE: VP/DAILY PRESS embarsement (need more proofreaders)
By the way, I just saw the exchange between Ed and the reporter on Facebook. I think there's a decent chance that when the ex-Pilot reporter asked if he was still at the paper and Ed said "nah, I came home" he was being literal, as in he was at the newspaper office but now he's at his house.

Given the timing of the buyouts, I can't say this is absolutely the case, but knowing Ed's deadpan humor, it's plausible at least. Who knows though.

They're supposed to move out of the Pilot building to somewhere downtown sometime in spring, but everything I've heard about the specifics of the when and where is off the record/rumor stuff.

VP/DAILY PRESS embarsement (need more proofreaders)
I feel like an online publication that consolidates coverage of the entire state would be something that could be successful. My problem with The Pilot at this point is the lack of content. I finish reading all the interesting content in about 10 minutes, and then there is no reason to comeback for a few days, because there is basically nothing new. AL.com does a good job in a statewide format for Alabama. I'd love to see something similar in VA.

What helps with AL.com is that Alabama Media Group owns newspapers in three of the state's four biggest metros (B'ham, Mobile, Huntsville) and the fourth is the capital, where they're going to have a presence anyway. That gives them a much easier time blanketing the state than having to start a media outlet from a blank slate.

BH Media (the former Media General) would be the best-positioned company to do something like that with publications in Richmond, Roanoke, Lynchburg, Bristol, Charlottesville and Danville, among other places. But they'd also have to expend significant capital to establish a better presence in the DC suburbs (Fredericksburg and Culpeper is as close as they get) and Tidewater (where there's nothing). And like most heritage media companies these days, they're cutting and consolidating before they're expanding. Perhaps if BH bought Tribune, or at least the Pilot and DP, but it's not like the Pilot wasn't on the block for many years.

A friend of a friend tried to start a state-focused online-only publication. Had a good idea with good reporters and writers, but I don't think it lasted much more than a year, if that. Going from a standing start in this market is tough to impossible, especially if you're unaffiliated with a larger media organization.

One more thing please.

Why the heck was there YET ANOTHER feature on William & Mary basketball on the front page of "our paper", The Virginian Pilot Sports page. I know the Pilot is "affiliated" with the DP, as in same owners, but this is beginning to be nuts. Third feature I recall on W&M.

How about Ed Miller writing something about one of "our" guys. You know, ODU is in the same town as the Virginian Pilot . Geeze.

ED, get your keyboard out and write something man.

1. One team is having a very good season, the other is not
2. The story was very well written on an interesting subject
3. The whole idea is to use limited resources for something regional, and it's a last-gasp strategy before closing. You may have noticed the reporters/editors walking the protest line yesterday because another staff gutting is coming soon. It wasn't in sports, so maybe you didn't read it.

They posted Ed's preview for the FIU game yesterday online.

Because they are not associated, but owned by the same company that owns the DP. Problem is DP was there first and they are the lead dog for this company. The days of it really being two different newspapers are for all practical purposes over.

I get the digital edition of the Pilot and the preview shows up on the far-right column of the front page, next to the big feature on the King's Fork basketball star. Did it not show up in print?

Apparently the staff was told yesterday that the sale of the building is official and that they'd be moving, but now there's no guarantee that they'll be in downtown Norfolk. Among the options are the printing plant in Virginia Beach and the DP's office in Newport News. Allegedly they had a place lined up downtown but that appears to no longer be the case. The cynic in me wonders if they're pulling back on a move because they aren't sure how much space they'll even need after this latest round of buyouts and possibly (likely) layoffs.

The funny thing is, W&M people used to complain that the DP ignored them in favor of UVA and VT. I guess that's less the case now.

Ed took the buyout

https://www.dailypress.com/business/jobs...story.html

Dave Johnson and outdoors reporter Lee Tolliver are also leaving. Not sure the timetable on their departures; I’d hope they would finish out the season but at this point who knows? Also no clue on how ANYTHING is going to get covered come fall. It’s very dire over at ... well, I was going to say 150 W. Brambleton Ave. but they’re leaving that place for parts unknown. Yeah.

This whole situation is not good for ODU at all. Is the Richmond Times having the same issues? I guess thats why ODU has hired so many of its own media people. Its going to bite the paper though. The only reason I subscribe is for "unbiased" Monarch news.

The contingent that doesn't like to see anything critical will like it. Wood Selig is loving it.

I guess we're going to have to start covering ODU sports ourselves. Anyone want to crowd source the writing for a blog?

Almost all newspapers are struggling, including the Times-Dispatch. Berkshire Hathaway sold all their papers, including the Virginia ones, to Lee Enterprises, which used to have a not-great reputation for salaries, retention and unpaid furloughs/layoffs. Not sure if that's changed but they've been busy the past 10 years or so with acquisitions. The BH (formerly Media General) papers have had their own furlough/wage freeze/layoff issues in the past few years, but that's par for the print media course.

Basically, if you're a national legacy paper (Washington Post, New York Times, Wall Street Journal) you're doing well, if you're a small daily or weekly mostly publishing notes from Ruritan and Rotary Club meetings and youth t-ball results, you're doing OK, and if you're in between, you're in trouble deep.

The Pilot used to have something like 250, 300 editorial employees. With this latest round of buyouts, they're down to the 60s, and that's counting the Daily Press employees. I'll always have a soft spot for the Pilot; I spent a long time there and got to know a lot of good people along the way. But it's bad and it's getting worse and I don't see a way to even tread water at this point, much less reverse their fortunes.

I don't see how they can survive much longer. And whatever you might think of their ODU coverage or editorial board's stances, the area will be worse off without a well-staffed daily newspaper's reporting.

I'd love it. Can't wait to hear how Aaron Carver has been our best offensive player this year. 04-cheers
