The 2008 team was notoriously bad. Worse than this team? I don't know, but that team was really bad.

That team was much worse at FT's than this one.

The 2008 team shot 69% at the free throw line for the season. Before today's game the tigers were shooting 68%.

What is the worst FT shooting Memphis State/U of M team since 1957? It is a tie between the 1995-1996 (Larry Finch) team and the 2007-2008 (John Calipari) team, both shooting 61% at the line for the season.

You say the 2008 team shot 69%, but then you say they were the worst at 61%. Your second number is right - and is the one I was referring to. The 08 team was historically bad at the line. ESPN stats actually show them at just under 60%.

The 2009 team was the one at 69%

Yes the 2008 team was either last or next to last in NCAA.

While FT shooting was one of the factors it was not the only factor in the loss.

Yes, the Tigers did miss 9 FTs.

HOWEVER:

Georgia his two more baskets than the Tigers. That is 4 points there.

Georgia hit 3 more 3 point baskets which is an additional 3 points differential bring it up to 7 points.

Georgia also missed 4 FT themselves which would have accounted for an addition 4 points and bringing the differential to 11 points.

Change any of these factors and the outcome could have been different.

We also had 4 turnovers in the final 6 minutes that were killers.

I think the point is that if we scored more points than Georgia we would have won.

Elementary, not common core elementary though.

If it was common core, I think the game would have been a tie.

Hell, we might have won.

The median for modern NCAA team FT% is ~70%. As a team, if you're above this number you're a "good" FT shooting team. (BTW last night we shot 70%, so contrary to the guys calling the game, it was fine.)

I looked at stats going all the way back to Kirk's first year of 1980. In those 41 seasons, we've had only 14 teams at 70% or above.
10 of these 14 teams were between the years 1980-1992.
So since then (over the last 28 years), we've had only 4 teams at or above the NCAA benchmark median. (One of them was last year.)
The Cal years, as we know, were the worst. Our average annual team rate was 65.6%. (Something to be said for lack of correlation between FT% and winning.)
This year we're at 67.8% which is just above our team historical average, but still below the national benchmark.

Interesting to look at players who led the team in FT%. We have 5 season titles sitting on the bench in Penny, Madlock (2), and Dwight Boyd (2). Dwight was an exceptional shooter. He had one season where he averaged 89.5%. That's the 3rd best season over this span. (The best year was Slick Rick McCoy shooting over 96% one year when he only missed one FT.)

We actually could be a good FT shooting team, because we have some good shooters. Tyler is an exceptional FT shooter, to go with A-lo, LQ, DJ who are all solid. Boogie should be much better than he is. The problem is Precious is just not good - and he gets to the line A LOT. I've pointed out before that he doesn't look at the rim until the split-second before he lets go of the ball. This should be correctable.

Come on, Dwight - share those skills!

I think what stuck out last night was our misses were too many front ends. We didnt get opportunities we would have if we had hit the front ends.

It was also the second game in a row where we started out shooting a very high percentage for the first 10 or so and then absolutely tanked the last half of our free throws. 4-11 is how we ended the Georgia game. I am not sure about WSU but I believe we were 9-10 through our first 10 free throws...
