1993 NCAA game with Western Kentucky. Memphis down 1 very late. Penny gets fouled very late. Steps to the line. Misses the front end. Memphis loses.

1986. Memphis gets fouled very late up one at Louise. Win this and likely end up with 2 seed in tourney instead of 3 seed that resulted in road game at LSU. We miss. Louise Milt Wagner then gets fouled and makes his...they win

2005 DWash

2008 4 consecutive misses at the end of the title game, keeps door open.

There have been plenty of regular games where free throw misses mattered. Have been plenty of regular season wins where the opponents misses mattered. As recently as UTK, remember they missed the front end late that would have given them the lead or tied that game

Big makes. Anderson in 2007 with TX AM

Joe Jackson in 2011 at UTEP

While not a big game just last year Harris nails three at the line to send some game to overtime.

We have had our fair share of dramatic misses. Today, in what was really just a nice out of conference game, poor free throw shooting was a major factor. Practice.

As important as free throws are, I wonder who will be the first college coach to actually hire a ft shooting coach?

It's like playing baseball without a hitting instructor.

Maybe I'm over thinking it but free throws are called free throws for a reason.

There are lots of coaches that could help with this. We squander points at the line.

You never see a top 10 FTs on Sports Center. Players know they get more attention from a spectacular play or a dunk or a timely 3 pointer. They focus on these things and not on the fundamentals such as FT shooting. FTs are not flashy enough for players to spend the needed time on them.

The 2008 team shot 69% at the free throw line for the season. Before today's game the tigers were shooting 68%.

What is the worst FT shooting Memphis State/U of M team since 1957? It is a tie between the 1995-1996 (Larry Finch) team and the 2007-2008 (John Calipari) team, both shooting 61% at the line for the season.

What is the best FT shooting Memphis State/U of M team since 1957? It is a tie between the 1961-1962 (Bob Vanatta) team and the 1987-1988 (Larry Finch) team, both shooting 76% at the line for the season.

You say the 2008 team shot 69%, but then you say they were the worst at 61%. Your second number is right - and is the one I was referring to. The 08 team was historically bad at the line. ESPN stats actually show them at just under 60%.

The 2009 team was the one at 69%

To clarify, when I reference the 2008 team that shot 69%, I am referring to the 2008-2009 team. I should have made that more clear in my original post. Thanks for pointing that out.

I get my statistics from sports-reference.com. Since you used ESPN statistics, I dug a little deeper into the numbers because of the difference in the statistic I used. ESPN shows 811 free throw attempts with 483 of them made (59.5%) for 34 games. Sports-reference.com shows 991 free throw attempts with 608 of them made (61.4%) for 40 games (because they include NCAA tournament games).

Good to know about ESPN stats not including post-season. Thanks.
Usually when people mention a team from a singular year, they're talking about the calendar year that the season wrapped up (eg 2008 team = 2007-08).

You have little idea of what you are talking about. Every team practices free throws. Ja Morant throws down flashy dunks and shoots 80% from the line. Most of the NBA players that are flashy like him also shoot FT's pretty well. James Harden 86%, Lebron 74%, Steph Curry 91%, Giannis Antetokounmpo 73%.

What blows my mind more than anything is guards that can’t shoot FTs. Boogie shooting 60 percent from the line. Come on man!

Precious isn’t a guard, but as much as he gets to the line, he should really be working on free throws.
