RE: Laughable Scores--College Basketball--January
Looks like Rutgers is inching toward a NCAA invitation. Nearly 30 years since their last visit.

Given the Big Ten is never good on the road in the conference season, if Rutgers can bag another two big teams at the RAC, it's going to be impossible to ignore them. NET's skewed enough that the Big Ten affiliation will prop up the numbers. Keep winning good games and not losing bad ones, they're probably a top 50 team for the rest of the season.

Big East is pretty much chaos now, too. Providence may not yet be dead if they can collect some respectable scalps.

RE: Laughable Scores--College Basketball--January
I read that this could be the first NCAA Tournament with Rutgers and without North Carolina.

Two teams who were by far the best in their mid-major conference had close home losses. Stephen F. Austin entered with a win at Duke and their only losses at Rutgers and Alabama. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi entered with 4 wins, which were 2 against Texas-Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) who has 1 Division I win, 1 against Northwestern State who has 2 Division I wins, and 1 against non-Division I St. Mary's (TX). Stephen F. Austin missed with 4 seconds left and missed a layup at the buzzer to let Texas A&M-CC win 73-72. That was in the Southland, which is 29th of 32 in the Conference NET, albeit even after the loss Stephen F. Austin is 43rd in the NET, so if they win the Southland Tournament they could get a much better seed than usual for a team from a conference that bad. Texas A&M-CC is 318th in the NET, which is about tenth percentile. 35 teams are below them, and ten percent of 353 is 35.3.

Stony Brook became the first America East team to ten Division I wins with an 81-77 win at Vermont. Stony Brook is 2-0 in the AE, and Vermont is 0-1 after having the first day off because there are 9 teams, which is an odd number. This game was important because all AE Tournament games are hosted by the better seed. After the game, Vermont is 95th in the NET and Stony Brook is 145th, with the third best as Albany in 242nd. Stony Brook went 3-0 at the Islander Invitational including beat host Texas A&M-CC, so Stony Brook can say they beat Texas A&M-CC who beat Stephen F. Austin who beat Duke with all three wins away. The game had a similar ending to Texas A&M-CC's win. Vermont missed two shots, and should have been given a shooting foul down 79-77 with about 2 seconds left. The final score was 81-77 because of Stony Brook's 2 free throws with 0.4 seconds left.

NET says their fluke was tonight. Duke more resembled their season-long play.

They actually fell to #79. NET rankings don't update in real time like KenPom. They are instead published the following morning.

Have to put in the Clemson beating UNC at UNC. Clemson was 0-59 @ UNC historically. 0-28 at the Dean Dome.

I can’t believe that held up for so long. UNC has had some “ho-hum” years sparsely sprinkled here and there, but Clemson couldn’t ever capitalize. And this isn’t even a great Clemson team, but it will now be remembered for something great.

They were helped by uncharacteristic poor coaching by Roy Williams. He should have had his players foul at the end of regulation since Clemson was down 3.

Haha Duke.
Uncharacteristically, both teams shot over 20 free throws and each made just 50%.

I don't consider the Hall beating Butler a "big" upset. SH is strong. I see both Butler and Seton Hall as Final Four material.

I do agree with you about Georgetown beating Creighton. I did not see that coming. A good win for Big Pat and the Hoyas.

#4 Auburn loses its first game, 84-63 at Alabama.

#7 San Diego State is the only remaining D-I unbeaten team.

The came out flat got out of their game (credit to Alabama for setting the tempo) and couldn't hit free throws in a game that saw a lot of them. The game remained a 3 to 12 point game until the final couple of minutes.

Ouch!

So when San Diego St loses do the '76 Hoosiers and Bob Knight break out the champagne a la the '72 Dolphins?

At the half...

FGCU 34
Kennesaw State 7

Ten minutes into the game, it was 10-1. That’s...03-puke

Kennesaw (which lost) had 44 points in the second half. A 37-point scoring differential between the first half (seven points) and second half (44 points). Could that be a record of sorts? Very unusual.
