They were reportedly firing after the Egg Bowl if they lost, they didn't, and let that leak.

Then the starting QB and a defensive player got into a fist-fight post-practice, which knocked the starting QB out for the bowl, which the defensive player played in with no repercussions.

Quite the turns of events from when he walked into his intro presser telling Nick Fitzgerald to make room on his shelf for the Heisman.

I was going to take up for Joe Moorhead up until I read about the fight, and I started looking at the situation in a larger context. In the AD's mind, Joe lost control of the football team, and they probably would have ignored him if he kept his job. I'm sure that Joe Moorhead is a nice guy. He seems to remind me of Ray Goff, a very nice coach we had at the University of Georgia. However, Goff didn't get the job done, and Moorhead lost control of the team. Since the AD seems to prefer disciplinarians, maybe he goes after Army's head coach?? Can't get more disciplined than a service academy coach.

This reminds me of the Ohio State team under John Cooper. Prior to their bowl with South Carolina they had offensive linemen beating the s**t out of each other. They actually had lawsuits against each other yet were still playing if I remember correctly? Cooper totally lost his team and it sounds about the same with this situation.

A poor fit from the start IMO. Moorhead was a career Northeastern-based coach with NE-roots (Penn State, Fordham, UConn, Georgetown). He had zero SEC ties and never coached or recruited in the South.

I'd guess Billy Napier will also be near the top of their wishlist.

I don’t think Billy will be going any where he signed a contract extension through 2025 yesterday, and I really think he wants the South Carolina job

Moorhead just signed a top 25 recruiting class, too. Any school would be lucky to have him as an OC. Hell, he saved James Franklin's job.

Also saw this on Twitter...Moorhead is the 3rd P5 coach to be fired this year with less than 3 years on the job. Only 6 coaches were fired in that scenario the last 30 years.

This was Chizik's problem. He was a fabulous DC. But being a coordinator is quite a different skill set from being head coach. A head coach at a big P5 school is a politician, a CEO over his staff, and has to be detail oriented with the ability to juggle team, PR events with donors, recruiting, and the press.

Moorhead jumped from being able to focus on what he was gifted to do to trying to fit a mold that didn't fit his personality. Chizik is a fabulous analyst and knows the intricacies of football, but I sincerely doubt he enjoyed any of the other facets of being a head coach.

His exposure with ESPN may have helped him adjust more to what is needed to be successful as a head coach, we'll see.

Don't put ideas like that in my head. I'm going to be so disappointed now when Leach doesn't take it!

I don't think a triple option offense would fare that well in the SEC West, though it'd be an interesting experiment for sure.

Ralph D. Russo

@ralphDrussoAP

I have to say, I thought the exact same thing. Will be interesting to see where Moorhead lands as an OC, presumably.

Some of the spots currently open:

Notre Dame
Oregon
Washington
Boston College

Should have waited a few days and tried to snatch up a former Mississippi St head coach

This is one update on Mississippi State's search for a new head football coach. An announcement is expected within a day or so.

Unlike the first two I believe this one was justified based upon the off the field issues and the way they were handled by Moorhead.
