Who Is Going to Come Back?
I was just looking at the Wikipedia page about the Sun Belt, and was astounded with the list of former conference members. Each wave of realignment changes the mix, and I would not be surprised to see some former members begging to return to the fold. Here are the former members. Which, if any do you expect to be returning to the Sun Belt?

UCF
Lamar
Texas Pan Am
(Now subsumed into UTRGV)
Jacksonville
UAB
VCU
UNO
UNC Charlotte
ODU
WKU
(lost to Central Arkansas)
FIU
UD
LaTech
NMSU
UNT
MTSU
Idaho
FAU

Like many marriages and most - if not all - athletic conference affiliations, I would expect any return to be a matter of convenience. Every once in a while, the interests of the suitor and the suitee will overlap, and the Sun Belt will have an Idaho, or even a Lamar. So I'm just asking who, if any of these schools might some day reappear in the 'Belt. 03-idea

Frankly, I only see four that, personally I would want back: MTSU, UAB, NMSU & ODU. There may a several that would probably like to come back, but who knows? I wouldn't venture to make any guesses.

I don't see any of those schools returning to the Sun Belt without substantial improvements to our media revenue streams.

RE: Who Is Going to Come Back?
I might see someone come back for an individual sport, men’s soccer, something like that. But I wouldn’t make a guess who that would be.

It's probably easier to guess who will be leaving next, versus who might be coming to, or coming back to the Sun Belt. And it's mostly a question of external factors, such as: What if the BigXII conference ever decided to actually have XII members? If they plucked Houston and Memphis out of the AA conference, that could cause lots of dominoes to start falling. It's no coincidence that the FCS Southland Conference has expanded to eleven football playing schools, so as to be prepared should SFA, McNeese, Lamar or Sam Houston get the opportunity to move up to FBS.

I'm just wondering, if the Sun Belt were to "graduate" its top two football schools, who would be waiting in the wings to repopulate the conference, and would any of those be former members.07-coffee3

RE: Who Is Going to Come Back?
Hopefully none of them come back.

Parity between conferences will be achieved in time. The top 10 or 15 programs will change little but the rest will eventually find parity. Those at the top of the bottom will eventually move one or two out of the elite creating a slight change in the landscape. Need to hit the lottery to sustain that kind of success though. It'll happen. The smaller conference wins in this new world. We have it. No one enters the Sun Belt unless it's a deal that can't be refused.

I could see UNO being welcomed back home with open arms if they were to seriously sponsor FBS.

Zero chance of that I am afraid.

Why would we hold UNO to a standard that half of the conference doesn’t live up to?

RE: Who Is Going to Come Back?
Future parity among G5 conferences is all but guaranteed as the P5 conferences continue to further separate themselves from the G5. There will be more and more discussion of regional realignment as attendance figures and TV payouts continue to declined for the G5. If the Big 12 were to ever disband and a P4 be created, utter chaos would ensue among the G5 conferences. Everything would change. I believe that day is coming, and it’s coming sooner than we think.

I like FAU (and I guess FIU along with it) in the Sun Belt. I also feel MTSU was a natural fit. ODU because.... why not?

RE: Who Is Going to Come Back?
I thought FAU and FIU didn't have good football attendance. FAU is only up temporary because of Lane Kiffin. Western Kentucky is good in football and basketball. I don't see Sunbelt adding teams for all sports unless Little Rock and Texas Arlington are no longer in the league.

This is one time we agree. Regional realignment is going to happen. Economic certainty in my mind.

Why?

I still have yet to get a single cogent reason for this.

Is it going to really help to replace trips to San Marcos, Arlington, Jonesboro, and Lafayette for Boca Raton, Miami, Huntington, Bowling Green, and Norfolk? Is it cheaper for some reason to travel large north-south distances than large east-west distances?

Also, it's incorrect to say TV money is dwindling. Maybe it is for CUSA, but it isn't for the rest of the G5.

Yeah the only coming back will be when the university presidents and the AD's finally throw in the towel and say regional conferences will be better for student athletes, fans and the budget and conference USA and the Sunbelt sit down at a big table and become two realigned conferences that will accomplish these goals. This really should happen sooner than later.

The geographical alignment argument has merit, especially for schools in the western States (Not to mention Hawaii and Mars). I would love to see a Texas G5 conference with Houston, Rice, UTSA, TxSU, UNT, SMU, and a handful of startups (UTA) and FCS bump-ups (Lamar, SFA, SHSU, ACU, Tarleton, etc.). But clearly, such a move is decades away. More likely, the P5 schools will bid up the cost of FBS by such things as paying players, and that many G5 programs will step down to FCS or lower.

Geographic alignment makes more sense more the west than it does for the east, and make more sense for CUSA than the Sun Belt. So the SBC East isn’t affected much at all, but CUSA West would benefit greatly, and the other 2 divisions would be somewhere in the middle.
