New bowl tie-ins?
Has there been any news in recent weeks that I have missed regarding bowl tie-ins? Which ones are we retaining, and against which conferences? Which ones are dropping off? Which new bowls are there? (I know the Myrtle Beach Bowl will be one, but I don't know who it would be against.) Will we get a tie-in against a P5?

When is this news supposed to come out?

Myrtle Beach will be AAC and MAC and is an ESPN Event. Cure will be moving to ESPN in 2020.

Myrtle Beach has a bowl pool bid between AAC/SBC/MAC/CUSA.

From the looks of the Bowl tie ins and the Bowl results this year, I think the B12 should be looking to get some G5 ties. Maybe they'd be a little more competitive. 03-lmfao

Would really like to see us get a P5 tie in, even if it’s the 11th team from that P5 conference. The G5 has proven over the last few years that the top G5 can play with and beat middle of the pack P5 teams.

At the very least the agreements need to be re-worked. The New Orleans Bowl shouldn't be able to hog-tie a SBC team when an ESPN P5 bowl wants them. That's ridiculous.

I really don’t want our #1 playing a 6-6 P5 team.

You'd rather them play UAB?

What does it prove for them to win against a bottom P5. I’d rather them beat a top G5 team.

Cincinnati defeating Boston College 38-6 looks far more impressive than beating a 9-4 UAB team that is actually better than BC 31-17, and closing out on a 31-3 run the final 55 minutes of the game. In all seriousness, the Sun Belt is in a tight spot. The C-USA Champion got 10-2 SMU. They ended up getting 9-3 UCF. They ended up with a P5 match-up and win.

All while App ended up with their 5th best team in UAB.

I'm not sure how the economics of all of this work but the Sun Belt has put themselves in position to get some of these Florida bowl tie-ins that used to belong to C-USA. Part of the issue is the Sun Belt having 10 teams, thus having less leverage to gain access to better tie-ins.

Sounds like an ad for expansion.

The way it seems there will be two direct tie-ins

New Orleans Bowl
Mobile Bowl

and three from the following pool of bowls

Birmingham Bowl
Boca Raton Bowl
Camellia Bowl
Cure Bowl
First Responder Bowl
Frisco Bowl
Gasparilla Bowl
Myrtle Beach Bowl

I agree. The name recognition of beating P5 teams, even if they're 6-6, sounds and looks better than beating a 10-win G5 team. It also looks better to the media to beat lowly P5 than a good G5.

App State recruits are going to take notice at the wins over UNC and USC, not the wins over Georgia State and Arkansas State. The same goes for bowl games.

Honestly, I'm not sure how much those wins "help" so much as not losing big helps. App has been competitive in every P5 game since 2015 save Miami (inexplicable how unprepared the team looked that day), Georgia (31-10 against a team that lost the National Championship in OT, not bad), and Clemson (41-10, Clemson won the Natty I believe).

I would say Troy playing Clemson 37-29 would do more for them in recruiting regionally than beating a Purdue or Boston College would.

All in all, beating UNC and USC helps most because they are regional schools and App is in contact with kids who follow those programs from birth. Generally, the kids may not be recruited by those schools but it shows that even though they may not be going P5, they will compete each and every time they play.

Beating UAB helps as well in the instances where App recruits Alabama. It doesn't happen often but App has been successful when they've headed southwest.

I see your point, gonna have to change my mind on this one. I agree that college football is perception and to the normal, casual fan, beating that P5 is bigger. 04-cheers

I like that scenario a lot better. More flexibility to make more interesting bowl match-ups, and can help prevent bowl fatigue of playing at the same place multiple years in a row. Dallas, Frisco, and Birmingham are all bowl locations that fans can easily drive to.

RE: New bowl tie-ins?
With apologies to our Alabama-natives on this board, I'm not overly fond of Montgomery as a bowl destination long-term.

There are a few cities I'd love to see Sun Belt bowls in:

1. Charleston, SC.
Charlestown is a spectacular southern city with tons to do, and is centrally located for the East division teams. The only downside is the two football stadiums are on the small side. The Citadel's stadium used to hold 21,000 (Camellia Bowl only holds 25K) but capacity is being decreased. However, temporary bleachers could increase capacity for the game if needed.

Charleston was in the mix to be a Sun Belt tie-in until the NCAA moratorium on bowls several years ago. Oh what could have been. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Medal_of_Honor_Bowl

2. Atlanta, GA
Atlanta only hosts one FBS Bowl game -- the Peach Bowl. Its central location seems ideal for a G5 bowl. It is easy to fly into, and drivable for many Sun Belt fanbases.

3. Charlotte, NC
Charlotte also only hosts one Bowl game. It is a rapidly growing city with plenty to do.

Then we would have more bowls that the city doesn't really care about compared to the bigger bowl. Kind of like New Orleans.
