Here's to a New Year, a new decade and hope springs eternal. Let's put 2019 in the rear view mirror, hire some good coordinators and watch our beloved Rockets win. That's about as philosophical as I get....

In my younger days before kids I used to have a open house on New Years that toasted each new year around the world starting in Moscow at 4pm. Really it was a test of moderation.
As the kids grew older it became a geography lesson. Now I tend to embarrass the kids handing out sheets that have all of the New Years locations and times to everyone I see.
I wish you all a happy new year and provide a link to the list of locations and times. Now we celebrate Iran and then Moscow at 4

Cool tradition. About 12-13 years ago my daughter and I did the NYC Times Square thing. Was bitter cold and we stood in one place for about 12 hours. One of the coldest New Years Eve ever from what we were told. The fun thing was that we were right up against the very front barrier, a million people behind us, looking up at the ball (NYC sets up "pens" of metal barricades in echelon for crowd control, and to keep people from being crushed). We had eaten lunch at the Times Square Hard Rock and walked outside just as the barricades were opened up. We decided "what the hell". Once you were in you couldn't leave your pen or you gave up your spot and had to move on. A lot of people gave up throughout the afternoon and evening. No bathroom, no food, no drinks -- just a bitter cold wind blowing through the side streets into the square. Talk about bladder control... especially having to watch the frequent Budweiser videos up on the multi-story Times Square LED screen showing a beer being poured (over and over). The only thing to keep you motivated was counting down New Year's somewhere around the world every hour. It got pretty crazy the last 2-3 hours. My daughter still stays in touch with some Canadian college students that she met that night. The NYC cops were fun to talk to on the other side of the barrier. It took about two minutes after midnight to clear the place out and find ourselves racing to the subway station. Definitely a once in a lifetime, bucket list item. If I had to do it again I'd wear a Depends and just piss my pants. As it was we didn't get to a bathroom until about 2:00 am at Fort Hamilton in Brooklyn. After the bathroom break we got into the car and drove a few hours before stopping at a rest stop. Grabbed a couple of hours sleep before getting back to Toledo on New Year's day.
