New Mexico State literally destroyed Cal Baptist tonight. If it wasn't for AJ Harris injury and Gilyard not playing the last 7 minutes of the 1st half, NMSU would have won by 30.

Give me a break. You were losing by one at halftime. The game was in single digits with less than five minutes to go. CBU has injuries as well. It was a good win on the road, but NMSU certainly did not literally destroy CBU tonight. Maybe it is a big deal to you because you lost their last year, but it is just one game.

It was a good solid win. But it was more about CBU being sloppy with the ball (whole game) and eventually running out of steam (last 10 minutes).

Less impressed with Gilyard after watching this game start to finish. I think if he'd stayed in for more minutes your margin would have been less, not more. Your five starters are better team players.

Gilyard had to play with a lot of restraint tonight. He is normally more of an attacking guard. But since the game plan was to feed the post, making Aurrecoechea and McCants our primary scorers, he did not force the issue offensively. Additionally, AJ Harris got seriously injured during the game; injured his ankle or foot. So, Gilyard needed to play most of the 2nd half minutes without getting into too much foul trouble; which was hard since CBU's offensive runs through three attacking guards; Acquaah, Boyd, and Flavors.

In a previous post, I stated that NMSU was stronger on the perimeter this season than a year ago because of our depth and experience. However, since that post, "it appears" there was a decision to Medical RS Clayton Henry the rest of this season (who did not play tonight) and AJ Harris injury sidelined him the rest of the game. So, NMSU once again lost its' two starters from a season ago. Hopefully, Harris' injury is not too serious or Jans might need to Medical RS Harris as well; with the hope of petitioning the NCAA for a sixth year of eligibility. We will see.

Fortunately, Queen and McCants woke up in the second half to help Aurrecoechea with the scoring load. Harris was having a good game before his injury. He had 9 points, 3 steal, 2 assists in the 8 minutes he played. Keep in mind, CBU's first half run happened shortly thereafter Harris' injury. Jans needed to regroup at halftime making Gilyard our primary point guard the rest of the way.

When AJ Harris left the game with about 7 minutes left, NMSU was up by 14 points. Harris nor Gilyard played the last 7 minutes of the first half where CBU outscored us by 15 points. Gilyard played pretty much the entire second half, and we outscore CBU by 16 in the 2nd half. Like I said, had either Harris or Gilyard played the last 7 minutes, NMSU probably would have gone into the locker room with a double digit lead. Just my opinion.

New Mexico State won tonight because we were the better basketball team. We won the rebound margin, 36-26, and outscored them inside the paint 46-22. Let's also not forget we had 17 offensive rebounds tonight and shot 49% from the field. The great part of last nights is NMSU only turned it over 9 times.

Trust me, Gilyard is probably one of the best scoring point guards in the WAC. He is one of the reasons why we beat Mississippi State last month. He also played at least 16-17 minutes in the 2nd half and was part of the run that outscored CBU by 16 points. If Harris or Gilyard plays the last 7 minutes of the first half, NMSU wins by 30.

Of course the team that wins is the better team that night. Not denying that, and not denying that you're the favorite to win the season. I still think 16-0 is smack talk and what I saw last night doesn't change that. A CBU team that we now see has some serious flaws still managed (with some luck and some NMSU injuries) to win a half. Just on the odds, sometime this season another team will get luck and NMSU injuries two halves in a row and win a game.

On Gilyard - y'all are saying he helped the other players play their own roles and maybe that's true. I'm no expert. To me it looked like several times he drove in and took risky trick shots when he could/should have passed it back out.

I was at the game last night. The difference in this game and last year's game at CBU was Ivan Aurrecoechea. Last year, Aurrecoechea played nine minutes, had 0 points and two rebounds, went 0 for 7 from the floor and collected four fouls. He was horrible in that game. This year, Aurrecoechea had 20 points and 8 rebounds in 35 minutes, with only two personal fouls. You are right, they kept going inside to Aurrecoechea and CBU could not match up with him. NMSU went to the basket all night without fear of what CBU had inside defensively. This is an issue the Lancers need to address, if they can.

Otherwise, the game was very similar to last year. CBU committed more turnovers. They got beat on the boards. NMSU just shot better in this game, mainly because they went inside. Milan Acquaah may have had a better game than last year, when he scored 36 points, but had zero assists. This year he had 24 points and 8 assists. He is literally bringing the ball up court and creating offense for himself or his teammates. I think CBU will win 20 games this season if they can keep Acquaah healthy.

On the NMSU outside shooting, I was not impressed. We will have to see it improves over time. I like the ball movement on offense, the bench strength and the defense. If the shooting gets better, then maybe they have a chance at a win in the NCAA tournament. They are obviously going to win the WAC.

Terrell Brown did a good job guarding Acquaah in the second half. Acquaah didn't do much the last 20 minutes of the game.

Those shots were NOT risky, that's his game. He did that against Mississippi State including the made basket that put us up by 3 in the final minutes of that game. He doesn't need to score a lot right now because he has several guys who can score 20+ any given night. Next year, he'll probably lead the conference in scoring like Zach Lofton did for us a few years ago.

You weren’t impressed with our 16 point win in an almost sold out arena vs. team with a 7 game win streak? Interesting

I caught the last few minutes of Seattle at Chicago State. Redhawks looked impressive, but tough loss for the Cougars. However, the new announcer they have is better than a few years back when it was a single uninterested student who would go literally five minutes without a single comment. Like she was given extra credit in her communications or broadcast journalism class for being willing to spend three hours in the arena.

On the NMSU outside shooting, I was not impressed. We will have to see it improves over time. I like the ball movement on offense, the bench strength and the defense. If the shooting gets better, then maybe they have a chance at a win in the NCAA tournament. They are obviously going to win the WAC.

You weren’t impressed with our 16 point win in an almost sold out arena vs. team with a 7 game win streak? Interesting

That would be interesting if I actually said that. I said I was not impressed with their outside shooting. You read the "I was not impressed" quote only. Try fully reading everything.

Terrell Brown did a good job guarding Acquaah in the second half. Acquaah didn't do much the last 20 minutes of the game.

NMSU, throughout the game, double teamed and trapped Acquaah. The help defense was good on him. He had seven points and four assists in the 2nd half. The four assists led to 11 points. He could have had more assists if guys just hit shots.

The game plan was to wear him down. Acquaah brings the ball up court, because he is CBU's best ball handler. He is also their best passer and best scorer. Their best shooter is out with a knee injury, so he is currently their best shooter. NMSU was making it hard for him to catch the inbound pass after a basket. They were all over him. It was a smart game plan, but no one individual shut him down. Besides, he still had 24 points and 8 assists in 34 minutes.

It still doesn't change the fact that New Mexico State is better then Cal Baptist. You can make every excuse in the book, but NMSU went on the road and kicked CBU's ass. NMSU will win by 20+ in Las Cruces.

You weren’t impressed with our 16 point win in an almost sold out arena vs. team with a 7 game win streak? Interesting

That would be interesting if I actually said that. I said I was not impressed with their outside shooting. You read the "I was not impressed" quote only. Try fully reading everything.

CBU shot 30% vs NMSU on Saturday (8 of 26). It's not that CBU had a off night, the NMSU defense shut them down. CBU might rely on their shooting but NMSU relies on our defense, and rebounding. It's why we'll win the WAC Championship again. We know we aren't a good 3 pt shooting team but that is why we emphasize rebounding. It's why we got 17 offensive rebounds against you on Saturday.
