RE: MBB Commit Raheim Moss
He's also a highly rated LB, so I guess in a way, UT finally got it's LB commit?
Also, it appears UT is saving money on recruiting as now FB (Stephens), WBB (Perdue) and MBB all have commits from Springfield.

Had a hoops offer from Cincinnati and a football offer from Cincinnati. May have a track and bowling offer from Cinci as well.

RE: MBB Commit Raheim Moss
Moss is playing a Post Graduate Season at Spire Institute, located in Geneva, OH which is a massive international training facility that opened in 2009. It’s geared toward high school and post-grad boys and girls in basketball, soccer, aquatics and track and field. Spire also is a U.S. Olympic and Paralympic training site. Moss led Springfield High School in scoring (17.9) and rebounding (7.3) in the 2018-19 basketball season and was second-team All-Ohio each of the last two seasons. He was quoted in a April 12th article in the Dayton Daily New about his decision to spend a year at Spire, that "by being the middle of nowhere with no distractions, it’s going to be a good thing". He added that "it’ll help me focus on my ultimate goal and what I’m really trying to get to.”

Springfield is typically much stronger in sports than Springfield. Just as Shawnee was a powerhouse when I went to school while Shawnee and Shawnee weren’t so much. ;).
The Springfield here is much larger than the one in Holland.

I don't remember, was there ever a time when UT had a athlete that play football and basketball at the university ? Springfield high, located in Springfield Ohio became one school when Springfield north merge with Springfield south.

Back in the day it happened a fair amount. Had a guy named Phil? who Joplin brought in from the football team to eat up space and foul guys for a few minutes a game. He’s the last I recall.

In hockey, that would be called a goon, by banging the opposition into the boards.

Phil Alexander. According to this article, the last player to letter in both before that was John Saunders:

Pretty hard to see a player recruited for BB to be allowed to play football. He'd miss the whole OOC BB season, and there's the risk of injury. I can see a player recruited for football come in and provide some depth to the basketball team late in the season possibly.

Come on.....
Phil Alexander was better than that...… He played pretty good interior defense in the paint and would scrap for the offensive rebound and put backs.
He played Defensive End on the football team. He was on football scholarship and would join the BB team after Christmas break.

Yeah Phil Alexander was a beast on the field and on the hardwood...
A really good all round athlete...

#1 Don't we need a power forward?
#2 So what's with freshman 6-3 G Donavan Moore. He has played a total of 16 minutes in four games. Why has K burned his RS if he isn't going to play? Will he be another one and done?

Moss is being coached at Spire by Former Bethune-Cookman Head Basketball Coach Gravelle Craig. One of his teammate's, 6-11 Aundre Polk has an offer from Maryland along with many Mid Major Programs.

RE: MBB Commit Raheim Moss
don't know a lot about Moss. saw a video of him from Spire which is mostly an interview with some scrimmage footage. i liked how his personality came across. seemed a pretty down to earth and honest kid. talked about realizing that his academics were holding him back and how he's learning to value that part of his life. seems like his initial recruiting was a little soft with the academic issues but picked up once he got that in line. not sure if the LOI period is still open, so he might just be a verbal until spring signing period and could get flipped by a larger school. basketball wise he has really nice size for a guard. 6-3 and pretty strong for his age. got some bounce and plays under control. i like the combo of him and rollins. 2 guys who should be physically able to compete at a high level of competition.
also wonder if the plan was always to bring in 2 guards or if the play of saunders and moore pushed the staff in that direction. not sure when it happened but sometime in late November Saunders forgot how to play the game of basketball. moore hasn't played a meaningful minute even though our guard rotation is a little thin and has been inconsistent. might be some concern one or both of those guys may not reach their potential and we need to make sure we are not guard poor. then again, maybe rollins fits as the next pg and moss was simply the best available player who wanted to commit.

RE: MBB Commit Raheim Moss
The early signing period ended Nov 20th. The next signing period for Division I Basketball is April 15, 2020 - May 20, 2020.
Moss doesn't seem like a typical Kowalczyk guard. He is a post grad at Spire academy working to improve his grades and his shooting touch. He reportedly is very athletic, plays strong one on one pressure defense and all the posts from his days at Springfield say he needs to improve consistency with his outside shooting. Hopefully his grades and his shooting have both improved this year. Spire defeated Orangeville Prep from Canada (Keshaun Saunders prep school) this week at a national tourney. He was an all state outside linebacker in football and promises to be a tough tenacious defender. On offense he thrives in transition and his game has been based on using his strength and athleticism to make dazzling plays getting to the rim. In high school, as a powerful 6’4” wing, Moss was capable of scoring explosively and also leading his team in rebounding and steals.

yeah, perhaps, it's better to swing and miss on an elite athlete than a guy who has game but might not have the athleticism to handle this level of play. however, coach k's successful developmental guys tend to be skill rich and modest athletes (navigato, boothe, knapke,...although rian pearson was an exception-a great athlete who needed to learn how to shoot). we've seen some great athletes never materialize as contributers (hill, rose, etc...)
