LSU-OU has got to be affected by the lopsided score.

Auburn / Minnesota would have been more highly rated but it was going head to head with Michigan / Alabama which admittedly was a much more compelling match up. That's the problem with viewing numbers in the noon slot on New Year's day. Right now 3 bowls are played in that time slot.

ND/Iowa State went up against Memphis/Penn State as well, I believe.

Yes, the Cotton Bowl and Camping Bowl were both on at 1 PM EST. The Camping Bowl was on ABC, the Cotton Bowl on ESPN.

It has been that way in the past, with the Outback, Citrus, and Gator Bowls being played at essentially the same time on NYD, but not this year. There were two games played at that time this NYD - the Outback and Citrus Bowls. The Gator Bowl was shifted to January 2nd.

Yes, CFP games have seemingly been very sensitive to that. E.g., even last year's title game, featuring titanic blue chip 14-0 teams in Alabama and Clemson, drew a low number because Clemson won easily.

Seems like casual viewers drop out quick when they see a CFP blowout developing.

To me New Year's day is an extremely frustrating and mismanaged day. You are coming off of two weeks worth of lesser bowl games strung out to tease their way to New Year's day with every bowl carefully spaced not to overlap and when you get to the day where the match ups involve better teams and the bowls still have a semblance of consequence to them you get 3 key games at once, an overlap of the Rose with the Sugar. Quite frankly that pisses me off! I know none of them want to give up New Year's day, but it seems to me if they actually made those games more accessible that all of their ratings would go up and that should make them more profitable. But 3 key games year after year at the same time is just stupid.

Personally, I like the NYD congestion, really the congestion of the days leading up to it. It creates a festive feeling of a "day of college football" to me. And with multiple screens, it's no problem to see all the games.

Plus, this year at least there wasn't much NYD congestion - just four games, and spaced out very well - Citrus and Outback at 1, Rose Bowl at 5, Sugar Bowl at 9. If the Rose and Sugar ended up overlapping it wasn't for very long.

There were actually more bowl games on December 27 and New Year's Even than on NYD.

For a very long time, the Orange and Sugar Bowls were both played at night on New Year's Day. I think it was only with the start of the CFP that the Sugar Bowl got the Orange Bowl kicked out of that time slot.

And, IMO... why not play all those games on NYD. It's the day for bowl games. Switch back and forth, have a few TVs going, whatever. Who cares which game has the best Nielsen rating.

Well the biggest money is to get exclusive time slots. However, with only 4 games, I felt like there was something missing NYD. There were 7 on 12/21, 5 on 12/ 27, 5 on 12/31 and only 4 on the 28th and 1/1. The Orange was 1 of 4 on Monday the 30th. Surprised there were so many on the 31st. That felt more like NYD than NYE.

Yes, my sense is that the CFP has done a better job of spacing out the NY6 bowls and giving them their own time slots than was done in previous eras.

IIRC, this year, the only NY6 that shared a time slot with any other bowl was the Cotton Bowl. The other five all had their own slots. And it's harder to do that with 6 major bowls than it was with 4 in the past.

It'll be interesting what happens if there's quarterfinals on NYD. Rose requires 5pm exclusivity. Sugar requires 9pm exclusivity. That really only leaves two options.

Orange 10e/10e
Cotton 130e/1230c
Rose 5e/2p
Sugar 9e/8c

Orange 1e/1e
Cotton 1e/1e
Rose 5e/2p

I'm sure that the Rose and Sugar have it in their contracts with ESPN that there won't be other games in the same time slot, but why not at least start NYD with 3 games in the morning window.

ESPN chose to have almost all the games on ESPN. There was only one ESPN2 (Frisco Bowl Friday 12/20 PM-USU-Kent) and 4 ABC games (Citrus 1/1, Las Vegas Sat 12/21, Camping World Sat 12/28, Boca Raton Sat 12/21).

Other than that, there was one CBS (Sun), one Fox (San Francisco-Cal-Illinois), one FS1 (Holiday-IA-USC) and 2 CBSSN.

Gotta say I'm really disappointed in the numbers for App State's bowl game with the great season they had. Losing by three points to Ga. Southern and otherwise winning twelve games entering bowl season, they were thisclose to the Cotton Bowl.

I don't think it's possible unless the Rose and Sugar become more flexible.

Well, a game's appeal depends on other factors. One is "it takes two to tango". E.g., Notre Dame vs Iowa State drew a lot fewer viewers than Michigan vs Alabama in part because Notre Dame's partner, Iowa State, is a low-brand team. App State was saddled with playing UAB, which is about the absolute bottom in terms of FBS profile.

Also, App State themselves is a low-brand entity. No offense, that's just the way it is. So e.g. the SMU vs FAU game played the same day drew more viewers because everyone who watches college football knows SMU.

FWIW, attendance at the New Orleans Bowl reached a 14-year low as well, probably because you have two teams with no ties to the area (no 'local anchor') and App State had been in the game the year before.

It was just a bad situation and matchup for an App team that deserved a much better bowl game all around.

RE: Bowl TV ratings
SMU was a thing back in the Pony Express Days and they are trending in the right direction. But how many younger fans know about SMU outside of Texas and their conference? The sad thing about App State is that most people only know about that win vs Michigan year ago and not about the success they have had. Totally agree about UAB.

It would be interesting to know, but my perception of bowl game viewership is that mostly older folks watch them. So thus SMU would be relevent.

App just needs to keep winning. The recognition will follow. The past two seasons have helped separate us a bit from “that little school that beat Michigan”. But we’ve got a long way to go.

The only thing that would do that frankly is making a NY6 bowl... Or pull off a huge upset early in the season. Beat Wisconsin next year.

Yes, you need a signature win over a top P5 program combined with general winning. Neither is enough, if you get the former without the latter it is regarded as a fluke or just a one-off and if the latter but not the former nobody is impressed by beating a bunch of other G5 nobodies 10 times.
