Really looking for growth from Reese and Alfis. They are going to get opportunities now - time to cash in.
+1 Wade had a mismatch down low, posted up the smaller defender and took him to school.
Liking Reece, jury still out on Alfis. We now have a very short bench. Before the departures, I thought we were deep. Not so much now.
JJ got worked up in the 2nd half with Curry and Kalu. What's the word on Hunter, doghouse, grades?
I thought alfis looked okay. He didn't look like a deer in headlights on offense and for the most part played solid defense. As someone else said, his shots didn't go in but he was playing within the offense. His shot doesn't look bad just won't going in.

I think he looks ok - def has improved from last year...I do notice that his shot release takes FOREVER. Needs a lot of space to get it out of his hands.

I noticed that. Plus he seems to have a super high arch. Thought it was going to hit the damn ceiling.

His shot looks like a Space Shuttle launch. Wish it was more consistent. I'm thinking he needs to be a little faster, both getting shots off and defending a shooter.

Wade was great and Alfis was solid. I did think Alfis actually helped the offense flow better at times, but we had the luxury of playing 6'4" guys at the 4 last night because of the lack of size on MTSU. We got 21 points from Wade, which will not happen against everyone. This game was against a pretty bad the that we matched up exceedingly well with. I left feeling better about the team, but we will have a much better feel after Saturday.

The entire conference is hot garbage. I am predicting we finish in the top 4 again and the usual on here will be touting what a fantastic coaching job Jeff Jones did this year. Looks like La Tech is the flagship this year and we know they suck. In reality, we will be the same team that started 4-9, just playing CUSA competition and we will get a false sense of being halfway decent. We looked improved against UMES as well. And as far as Saturday... well yeah, UAB sucks too.

The teams at the top are not as good as in years past, but the teams at the bottom are better than they've been. As a conference, the league rankings are better this year than they've been.

Nope La Tech doesn't suck and Marshall has nine players over 6-7, had a ton of blocks last night. That will be a bad matchup for us.

At this point, Im hoping for a winning season and if we get really lucky, a top four CUSA finish. I figure we might be in the middle pod this year though.

Seriously, nobody's ready to anoint this the new golden age of ODU basketball but looking good for most of the game against even a poor Middle Tennessee is worthy of at least a little happiness. This *is* a team that beat CAA contender Northeastern on the road and gave at-large contenders Northern Iowa and VCU a good fight on their courts. There's signs of quality. It's OK to celebrate or even acknowledge them without having to remind everyone how right you are about how bad the program's gotten and that any victories should be dismissed out of hand. There's plenty of time for that after their next loss.

We beat LT last year by 1 point each time. If they returned everyone, thats a good thing for them bc it means they likely improved from last year.
Ever's opinion of sucking is different than a lot of peoples, obviously. LT is pushing to be a top 50 team right now. Not sure if they stay there but they had a very good win vs. Miss State and no bad loses.
FWIW, the conference is probably better this year. LT is class of the conference. WKY and UTEP are borderline top 100. NT and Marshall are right below them.

No it's not worthy of any happiness. A top 4 finish is a terrible thing. Haven't you been reading the boards?

That was my point precisely. We are probably going to whip up this craphole conference because as poorly as our OOC was, the NE win and the close losses to UNI and VCU probably land us the 2nd best resume in the conference. Hell Marshall fans are bragging all over the main board about their loss to UNI. I am just choosing to not get complacent to that point.
Looks like Wade and Oliver are a nice core to this team. Let's hope Jeff can hold onto them.

There's plenty of time for that after their next loss.
Thing is, I largely agree with you about this. It's not a great conference (though I disagree that LT sucks), and once again it's lacking in OOC scalps. I don't think anyone should be jumping up and down about how great life is either.
But consider: ODU removed two important members of the team, and there was a lot of angst and, at the very least, uncertainty about how the rest of the season was going to play out. And while, yes, UMES and Middle Tennessee at home are far from the greatest indicators of success, it's if nothing else encouraging that they look like a quality team, even if they're not playing one.
With OOC done and CUSA not providing few good-win opportunities, everyone's opinion of the team is largely baked in at this point, barring a BT-level collapse. If they win, well, look at who they beat. If they lose, well, there you go. That works the other way too, with people willing to write off the regular season for the most part because the only thing that matters is four days in a curtain-divided football stadium 40,000 miles from Norfolk.
My guess is that ODU is a lot closer to the team that beat Northeastern and hung tight with UNI and VCU than the one that got swept in the Caymans and got shithoused by W&M. But who knows?

RE: MTSU
Yeah, MTSU Sucks. But I would guess that they are better than JMU, so call it progress.
On a side note: We'd better be practicing on how to beat a 1-3-1 zone, because I have a feeling we're going to see a lot of this in the near future until we can beat it.
