UNCW Mens basketball recruiting
Just took a peek at verbal commits. Maybe someone can explain why UNCW has 5 spots left for 2021 and ZERO open offers? For the sake of comparison I looked up ECU. They have 5 spots left and 10 open offers.

6'7" Melvin Edwards (2*), from Georgia, is billed as the real deal. And 2* pg Marcus Elliot, from Holly Springs, will be walking on.
So we still have a scholarship to give.

Edwards listed at 6'6 on Verbal commits, has he grown?

Edwards would really seem to fit into pressing style and looks quite athletic. I remember his video being impressive but it’s been a bit since I looked at it.

Edwards is a similar player to Boggs and Sims. I do think he's more developed physically than both of them were in high school. Supposedly he was a solid high school football player and has impressive academics. Seems like a good get for sure.

They are now saying 6'7". But you know how that goes.

6'6, 190 seems a bit on the light side for a football player

He was a WR. We have had a great history with players who also played football. i.e. Goodsberry, Wyrick, Laue. They tend to have a tougher mentality.

Defensive players tend to have a tougher mentality than offensive guys. Didn't all three of those play Linebacker?

Here's a highlight tape from his senior year football season

I take it you didn't play football. Defensive players have more opportunities to give hits. But offensive players better be tough enough to take those hits. Marshawn Lynch plays offense. And so did Steve Smith. Just a couple examples.
A good football team carries that toughness as a team.

WRs tend to be divas though. All of the guys you mention appear to have a different physical mold. He adds 20lbs, could be tough.

Agreed. Football is football regardless of the side of the ball. Any kid that plays high school football when they have multiple D1 offers in another sport is a kid I'd take. To me that shows he's a competitor and has toughness.

No doubt about it. Any football player is tougher than just about any other sports' athletes. I'm not disputing that part.

It's just that the defense is all about "seek and destroy". Hence why a lot of defensive players are lunatics. Ray Lewis, James Harrison, Mike Singletary, etc etc.

Those lunatics stuck with football. In basketball you need guys with a more controlled toughness. Plus offensive players tend to have better hands.

Exactly. Having a player with great length and great hands that may be able to contribute earlier in his career vs a player like Coombs who needed more development time is going to be essential for us. Hell, even Cacok wasn't much of a factor his freshman year... which sounds almost criminal to think about.

Our team needs size and contribution at that size ASAP.
