RE: My Current Thoughts on UAB Football
The entirety of the state of Alabama is SEC-centric - above all else they value the SEC. So, if a lowly SEC program offers an Alabama HS player a scholly, they will take it. There is a certain prestige among neighbors, local community, peers, and friends to receive a SEC offer. Getting 3-star players in SEC territory is a big deal as these same players could choose Vandy, Ole Miss, Miss St, Arkansas or some other lower tier SEC school or even a mid-level team from some other P5 conference and maintain the HS "rep". Once they accept the offer and "flame out" they will still not return to go to their local G5 university(Troy, USA, UAB) because they will be known as the guy that couldn't make it in the SEC/P5 conference.

I'm not saying we should give up on local or Alabama kids, just that there is a reason we have a hard time recruiting Alabama kids and why we spend a lot of time outside of the state - in the bordering states of GA, FL, and MS(a bastion of JUCOs are there). At some point or until things change there is a return on investment(ROI) aspect to recruiting. Even our local community HSs seem to have a preference for most non-local options. There are instances when players from the metro area go/have gone to FCS and lower-tier FBS schools rather than UAB - and its not because UAB didn't offer. Sometimes its because there is a real thought that they are better than the UAB level - a lack of respect for the UAB product. Even will our advances, there is still a certail stigma attached to the UAB football program. As a matter of fact in most, if not all, things UAB is more-respected and appreciated outside of the state of Alabama than inside. As UAB continues their upward trajectory I really think things will improve.

What these kids need to realize is they should go to the school that's best for them, not the school your family and friends want you to. And as for those kids who feel that can only get to the NFL via the SEC or some other P5 school, there are numerous cases, seen weekly, of NFL players who went to G5 schools. Many are even "stars" on their team. If you can play, the NFL will find you.

It's not as stupid as it might sound to you..........some coaches recruit very hard, others stay at their complex most all of the time. Ask the local HS coaches how often they see our guys around. Losing Brian Williams was not good. (same with Duwan Walker).

Landed not one local recruit from the start of fall camp til now. Clark isn’t some unknown head coach. Kids eyes would light up if he stepped foot into their coaches office to see them.

Xavier Hill and Rodney Groce at Pleasant Grove, Jayson Jones at Center Point, DeMarkus Cunningham at Bessemer City, De’Rickey Wright at Gadsden City, Cortez Eatmon(Juco) from jasper high, Ladamian Webb local guy in Juco, Xavier Morrow at Paul Bryant high, Mike Pettway at Thompson, Rishard Densmore at Bessemer city, Rontarrius Wiggins at Jacksonville, Jalen White at Daleville, Trenton Yowe at Calera, Justin Sistrunk at Munford, Eddie Watkins at Hillcrest Evergreen, Decarious Hawthorne at Center point. I could keep going on 2020 recruits.

Puts in about as much effort as Ehsan.

RE: My Current Thoughts on UAB Football
I believe there is a 3 to 4 year window, that we are finally ending, of players that had marked UAB off their list. If you were in 9th grade when the football program shutdown, you were a junior before they played another game. At that time UAB was probably written off because the product wasn't great before the shutdown and the assumption was it was going to be awful the first year back. So I could be wrong, but I kind of feel we wont know exactly how good we can recruit until we can get a hold of the post return high school kids. The ones that weren't being recruited by schools while we weren't playing. So I think we move the needle a little this upcoming recruiting class and then with the addition of the stadium and being 5 years removed from the return I think we see a big jump the following year.

Wow, its amazing that you personally know all these kids from so many different high schools and each of them has personally confirmed to you which schools and coaches have and have not visited then. How do you have time to do anything else? Have you thought of starting your own recruiting service? I hope you givr it serious thought with a network this wide and relationships this deep with so many star players across thr area.

:)

How often are these HS coaches pushing recruits our way? I don't know a ton about how we recruit, but it appears there is some distrust on both sides from the outside. If we get guys to commit early, it appears many times they try to use that as leverage to move to an SEC program.

I understand as fans we want what's best for the program, and can get frustrated when we think things can be done differently, but just suggesting local players because we are aware of them doesn't mean they fit what Clark is doing at UAB. The guy has won everywhere he's been, and I find it very hard to believe he puts no effort into recruiting.

We're getting three stars right now. Is the new stadium going to start getting us some four star recruits?

Yes and it will especially help with getting more local recruits.

Local recruits, likely. Four star recruits, highly unlikely. Until our conference affiliation changes, it will take more than a shining new stadium to get kids to want to play in CUSA. That's just a reality thing.

RE: My Current Thoughts on UAB Football
I'm sure FBHC Clark and staff are getting info from the UAB administration on how well general students from those schools are succeeding in course work at UAB since he does not want to bring in a kid and then lose him to academic failure. Some good athletes simply are not good students and could result in a wasted scholarship. Also it should be remembered that the majority of state High Schools are almost 100% dependent on state funding from the SETF and the 2019-2020 SETF budget is the first one to match the one for 2007-2008. That's over a decade of diminished funding for most state public schools - and their athletic programs.

For comparison, how many instate public school players were signed by Alabama FBS universities in the early signing period just completed?

Alabama signed more instate players than the others. Most of Auburn and Troy's came from Georgia, and South Alabama signed a lot from Mississippi.

Glad someone finally said it, we lost a lot when we lost coach Williams. All I’ve seen was Jody Wright this and that. Williams definitely was the bigger loss.

RE: My Current Thoughts on UAB Football
Football camps. Football camps. More football camps. We have had close to a half dozen of these every spring and summer.

This is where Clark gets a chance to see a lot of prospects. Heck, he has even offered scholarships to some on the spot.

Heard of Spencer Brown?

He also has great relationships with most of the high school coaches in the state. That one coach from Buckhorn can pound sand. Not even sure what position he coaches.

I know that Clark and the other coaches make it a point to have on going conversations with the high school coaches (focusing on the local ones obviously) and keep up to date on prospects.

Since Clark has a better record in his 4 years of coaching here than anyone else previously (excluding Hilyer) I think he knows what he is doing.

Want to talk about recruiting under a crappy head coach? I for one don't.

But I'm sure if you ask Coach Clark he would count the stars in your Lucky Charms.

I could not care less about where our kids come from! But since we're playing this game, lets compare us to that one program we aspire to be - Boise State.
Boise- on their entire roster- has only 13(10%) players from the state of Idaho. The vast majority of their players come from California. We have 63(48%) players from the state of Alabama on our current roster with 25(20%) coming from the Birmingham Metro. I'm sure that the current staff would love to have kids out of their own back yard but their true mandate is to recruit and sign the best players to fit their schemes.

Personally, I don't care if a kid come from Woolynuts, Alaska as long as he can play the game, doesn't embarrass my university and contributes to our success.

Fact is that if Clark was not so LAZY we would have 200% of our players from the greater Birmingham area and 178% from the rest of Alabama. It’s an OUTRAGE!!!!
