Fire McGrath - Official Thread

The program is actually in disarray and hopefully Bass makes a change after the season. I know it is on a much larger scale but people said the same thing about UNC football and the huge buyout. The donations and ticket sales have more than made up for paying a guy to stay that you know is not capable of doing the job and I have reached that conclusion on CB.

Agree. I think if somehow, however unlikely, we are able to land another Keatts type star that can quickly turn things around... it would be financially worth it to end this disastrous tenure.

Sitting here watching the Delaware game.

1. They are better than we are at every position.

2. They set up isolation by moving three and four players to one side of the court every posession. Their offensiive movement creates open shots where ours rarely does.

3. Our idiot coach hasn't yet figured out we are a far better team when we press full court hard. Saving it for when we are down 20+ game after game proves just how inept he really is. Playing close in second halves is useless, but that's when we press, and you'd think he'd use it the whole game at some point.

While I obviously agree with the coaching assessment, I do think we should still refrain from such denigrating descriptions.

Phillips is a star in the making however but yes they had serious talent. We need a big or 2 that has size and can defend. To me,that forced our hand. We stopped doubling in the 2nd half and played better. Unless you’re a UVA, it’s tougher when you double and they made us pay. And,the Cavaliers have size usually too.

RE: Fire McGrath - Official Thread
I did not see the Delaware game so I can't comment on that at all but I've seen them play 4 times this year and I have to say I like the talent level with the guards. I am not ready to jump off a bridge at this point and if CB signs two good bigs I could see it turning around really quick next year.
I watched UNCG get smoked for 4 years under Wes Miller and all the fans wanted him fired there-same deal as here. Not saying for a minute that it will turnout that way at UNCW but I would like to see him get a shot at it. CB is more than likely here this season and next so I don't think asking for him to be fired is helpful in any way.

He won't get fired this year or next year. But, next year will determine whether he stays. Four straight years of failure and all excuses are gone. His biggets problem with signing two "good bigs", is they will have to be able to play immediately next year. That means a really good freshman big or transfers who can play immediately. But, why would they come here?

Miller became successful when he adopted the press...period. Which is what I wonder about with McGrath. We play really well when we press, but we only press when the game is out of hand and we're down 20+. Seems he'd get a hint.

Players want to play first and always and they all want to win of course. Why not play at UNCW and put your mark on the program is how I think they should see it. There is an opportunity here to get on the court and play big minutes with some really good backcourt players right now. Miller has adapted to the roster he has and I think he gets a big time job at some point.

Can someone explain how we made it work to payout Buzz's contract, but now we can't do it for McGrath if Jimmy deemed it necessary. I don't know anything about what goes into it but the article above makes it seem possible as it states we owed Buzz nearly 900k.

You mentioning the transfer portal made me look up what the guys from last years team who transferred are up to.

Jeantal Cylla might have been better off staying at UNCW in hindsight as he only averages 9.6 minutes per game, along with averaging 1.5 points per game. Jeantal did not see the floor in today’s Arkansas win over Indiana.

Jeff Gary is averaging 31.5 minutes per game in the 4 games he has played for Mercer since his return from sitting out due to transferring. Gary is averaging 10.5 points a game while shooting 47% from the field.

Jacque Brown is playing at D2 Oklahoma Baptist and is averaging 22.4 minutes per game. Brown is also averaging 7.2 ppg while shooting 35.8% from the field.

Matt Elmore is averaging 17.9 minutes per game at D2 Barton College. Elmore is also averaging 4.3 ppg.

Ty Taylor is averaging 30.9 minutes per game at Eastern Kentucky while shooting 35.9% from the field and averaging 13.2 ppg.

Jaylen Fornes has not played yet for Nicholls State due to the NCAA transfer requirements.

From what I understand (and I could be misinformed), the chancellor arranged for some manner of "loan" from another university source to pay buzz off. If so, I would think a second "trip to the same well" might not be likely. But who knows -

Hi guys- just checking in from the called this from day 1 camp. Sorry had too.

Mullet- signing a big or two would help get a few more Ws but cannot offset his terrible lack of ability to coach. Sorry, this isn’t UNC where a roster full of McDonalds all Americans can make up for lack of coaching

Gotcha, now that makes sense. My guess would be that it's going to have to get really bad for them to go to that well after this season. I sure hope we're competitive for 40 minutes tonight against Drexel.

How was this never discussed before? That makes good sense. My sense is that the money was probably paid back quickly thanks to the rapid success we had soon after the buyout. Which would make one wonder that perhaps another school would be open to agreeing to such a loan?

You have to think that Bass is at least exploring these options right now?

I believe what Proff meant was another source within the university. With all the campus expansion going on, any source like that may be dried up for now.

Got to be some options. Get creative as others have mentioned. If I know my current project at work is the most important ever to get done but I don’t have the resources I’m going to find s way to get it done

Just calling it like I see it....Now, as well as 3 years ago. Sorry some want to continually shoot the messenger instead of changing the message. My message has ALWAYS been delivered in a civil manner here.Hopefully this horrid hire is something the program can bounce back from. Every year it continues will make it that much more difficult however. It sucks that it would be such a financial strain to cut ties after this season, but sometimes it's best to bite the bullet and move on before catastrophic damage is done.

Another slap at UNC coaching is just stupid dude. What the hell is with you and Carolina ? Coach Williams has won 3 NCAA titles and that tells me all I need to knw about him. I am not a Carolina fan but the constant bashing is petty at best.
CB has to get at one big for next season who is ready to play.
