Seahawks Open CAA Play With Blue Hens

NEWARK, Delaware – UNCW kicks off its 36th season of men's basketball in the Colonial Athletic Association on Saturday night when C.B. McGrath's Seahawks travel to the Delmarva to take on Delaware in the league opener for both clubs at the Bob Carpenter Center.

The Seahawks, 5-8, return to the floor for a 7 p.m. tip against the 10-3 Blue Hens after wrapping up non-conference action last Saturday with an 88-73 defeat at Vanderbilt. UNCW has lost five in a row entering conference play.

Sophomore guard Jaylen Sims, a CAA honor roll selection back on Dec. 2, continues to lead the Seahawks with 14.8 points and 5.7 rebounds each contest. The Charlotte, N.C., product ranks 10th in the loop in scoring and is tied for first in three-point field goal percentage, converting 47.4 percent of his long distance attempts.

UNCW opens conference play on the road for the first time in 10 years (2010-11) and stands 13-22 in league road openers through the years. The Seahawks outlasted James Madison, 86-83, in overtime last year in their CAA debut.

The road has not been kind to the Seahawks in 2019-20. UNCW stands 1-5 away from the Port City this year, 0-4 in true road games and 1-1 in neutral site games. UNCW's lone victory away from the Port City came on Nov. 23 when the Seahawks edged FIU, 66-63, in the Battle for the Capital in Washington, D.C.

Picked to finish fifth in the CAA's preseason poll, Delaware is off to a quick start under fourth-year head coach Martin Ingelsby. The Blue Hens stormed out of the gate with nine straight victories before dropping three of their last four outings, including an 82-75 overtime decision at LIU eight days ago in Brooklyn.

In the loss to the Sharks, UD rallied from 15 points down in the final 7:30 of regulation to force overtime before being outscored, 18-11, in the extra session. Redshirt junior guard Nate Darling led UD with 20 points, while redshirt sophomore forward Justyn Mutts posted his fifth double-double of the year with 17 points and a game-high 13 rebounds. Junior guard Ryan Allen added 16 points and redshirt senior forward Collin Goss chipped in 10 points.

Four players are averaging in double figures for UD, topped by Darling's 21.4 ppg clip. The UAB transfer leads the Blue Hens in field goals, three-point field goals and free throws as the CAA campaign begins. Allen (14.1), Mutts (14.0 ppg) and junior guard Kevin Anderson (10.5) give the Blue Hens plenty of firepower.

The Blue Hens have not lost at the Bob this season, posting home victories over Bridgewater, Stony Brook, UMES and Columbia. Ingelsby's club leads the CAA in field goal percentage at 48.9 percent and ranks third in scoring offense (75.5 ppg) and scoring defense (67.0 ppg).

In the last meeting between the two teams, Anderson scored all 14 of his points in the second half to propel Delaware past UNCW, 70-66, on Feb. 9, 2019, in Newark. Allen anchored four Blue Hens in double figures with 15 points and senior forward Eric Carter had 13 rebounds for his 12th double-double of the season. Devontae Cacok racked up 19th double-double of the campaign for the Seahawks behind 11 points and 10 boards.

Saturday's contest will be carried over the air on The Breeze, 95.9 FM, with play-by-play voice Mike Vaccaro on the call. The game may be heard worldwide on the station's website, http://www.959thebreeze.com. A live video stream of the CAA lid-lifter is available for ppv on FloSports.

Seahawk Storylines

The Seahawks stand 0-4 in December following losses to Stanford, Charlotte, Mercer and Vanderbilt. UNCW has dropped 11 consecutive games in December dating back to a 101-60 romp over Greensboro College on Dec. 28, 2017, at Trask Coliseum.

The Seahawks have faced Delaware more than any other former America East member since UD, Hofstra, Towson and Drexel joined the league in 2001. UNCW holds a 22-15 advantage in the series and owns five CAA Tournament victories (2002, 2003, 2006, 2008, 2017) over the Blue Hens.

UD has won four in a row over UNCW, but the two clubs have split the last 10 meetings. The Seahawks stand 6-10 overall in Newark and have lost nine of their last 11 games on the Blue Hens' home floor, including two straight at the Bob. UNCW's last win in Newark came on Jan. 7, 2017, in a 91-81 triumph.

UNCW is facing new UD skipper Martin Ingelsby for the eighth time and is 3-4 against the former Notre Dame aide.

Seahawk skipper C.B. McGrath owns a 14-26 ledger against CAA opposition since taking over the program in 2017-18. He is 8-10 at home, 4-14 on the road and 2-2 at the CAA Tournament against CAA foes. The Seahawks have dropped seven straight conference road games since a 67-61 decision at Towson on Jan. 5, 2019.

Rebounding has been a challenge for the Seahawks this season. Opponents have outrebounded the Seahawks in nine of the 13 games so far in the campaign.

The Seahawks are shooting 45.8 percent from the floor - fourth best in the CAA - ith two players in the top-10 in field goal percentage:Marten Linssen (.640), Shykeim Phillips (.494). Linssen leads the circuit in field goal accuracy, making 48-of-75 shot for 64 percent from the floor.

Good write up! Hens with 4 in double figures is tough. The starters will be Phillips, Okauru, Tolafree, Sims and Linssen.
It's Phillips and Okauru at guards/wing now with Tolafree and Jenkins, all will play with Ty still out. Sims can play 3 or 4. I'd rotate the 4 bigger guys at the 4 and 5 with Sims sliding to 3 at times.

Hawks low in numbers now so everybody will play which is good for developing the bench. The 2 freshmen and Bowden will likely man the 4 and 5 with Boggs possibly sliding to 3, at times. Dodd and or Bowden will have to post defend at least some.

I'd say play hard defense, share the ball, not force things and see what happens. This will be good experience for everyone as they will be forced into action. You never know? They may come together and play better. Situations like this is how you determine what a player is about.

To me, it's not worth wearing guys out here so limiting minutes to under 33 minutes and trusting the bench is important for the longer haul. Once/if Ty gets back, the team will be better for it because guys will have more of a feel and roles with be more defined regardless of the immediate outcome. We really miss him on the court right about now.

C.B. is 0-4 against Martin Inglesby and 4-27 in true road games. Our chances at winning this first CAA matchup are quite low.

Drexel hosts Charleston in their first CAA game on Saturday prior to hosting us. There's hope of beating Drexel given that C.B. is 3-1 against Zach Spiker (1-1 on the road).

I’d say our odds vs Delaware are 10-20% and our odds vs Drexel our 25-50%.

We are 12 point dogs with the over/under at 139.5. espn gives us 11.8% chance of winning.

I saw that Proff and was wondering what was up. I guess the odds makers see that the Hawks lost their PG and that the Hens have an edge inside plus have balanced scoring and have older more experienced players.

Hope that the Hawks come out fired up and ready to play. All hands on deck and again, this is when you see which guys will compete and which guys will roll over and not fight. Ty's not suiting up so they know the deal. To compete, UNCW will have to share the ball and hit their open 3's bottom line. And, that may be what decides this game. You have to be able to score on the road and answer. Great energy works wonders along those lines.

As a side note, I watched as Craig Ponder played on a short-handed team and kept on competing hard. That kid stuck it out and ended up a CAA champion. And, he was the one guy that stood out to me and kept on competing when the chips were down. Fast forward 2 years and he was the guy that hit back to back 3's to put UNCW ahead against Hofstra to win the CAA tourney and went on to just about beat Duke in the NCAA tournament 2 years after UNCW was struggling. This is what I look for as an observer and lifer. Go Hawks!!

The Sagarin takes Delaware by 13.29 (Rating), 12.39 (Predictor), 12.98 (Golden_Mean), and 15.53 (Recent). KenPom thinks Delaware is 12.36 points better without home court. The combination of line and over/under makes 76-64. Seven Overtimes predicts 77-62 and gives you a 14.0 percent chance.

Delaware has 86.7 percent of their field goal attempts by their starters, who have been the same every game except for one game Nate Darling missed. All five shoot well. Darling, Ryan Allen, and Kevin Anderson combine to shoot threes .405. Justyn Mutts and Collin Goss combine to shoot twos 116-191 (.607). In their small amount of threes attempted, they shoot 4-25 (.160). Darling, Allen, and Mutts shoot free throws well, Anderson shoots .645, and Goss has made 4 of 11 (.364), so fouling him in the act of shooting could be good. Mutts is fourth in the CAA with 9.6 rebounds, and Goss is tenth with 6.3. 9.6 is tied for 38th among players on 353 teams. Mutts has fouled out 5 times, and nobody else in the CAA has fouled out more than 3 times. If he gets in foul trouble, it could mean more time for Villanova transfer Dylan Painter, who has averaged 9.5 points in 13.5 minutes in 2 games since he became eligible.

As a Hofstra win I'm rooting for you to give a contender an early home loss.

I plan on having it open on my laptop but all my attention will be focused on the Hurricanes game. I’ll watch during commercial breaks and the intermissions. I have no doubt we will have trouble keeping it close with a 20 point loss being my expectation. Apathy has set in for me.

Delaware is a better team than Vanderbilt. Top 2 finish for the Hens in the CAA. Better defensive team than previous years.

We have to be one of the worst D1 teams in the country. None of our losses against subpar to decent opponents are close.

Anderson, Allen and Darling (starters) are all 50% from 3 in the first half. They have two bench players that are both 1 for 1 from deep as well.

Can someone slip a sleeping pill in McGrath’s halftime drink and let an assistant take over?

They're doubling the post and that help is leaving shooters open. Phillips looked good overall, but can't get his offense going yet-just rimming out on him but good moves. Sims hasn't scored either. The effort wasn't bad to me, but we're having a tough time getting shots. Tolafree showed some driving ability late as did Philips.
