Ball State lost at least a couple of games without its starting 2G

KJ has now been out 5 games with his ankle injury. Was out four games, came back for the three games in Hawaii at very limited minutes, and now back out again tonight. It appears that when he's fully back, he will no longer be a starter, however. Coleman has effectively passed him for the starting spot.

In addition, Zach Gunn, who contributed significant minutes last year, has yet to appear this year (has been in a boot all season), so assuming he's a med red. Hazen also missed a couple of games. So it's been an interesting season injury-wise for the Cards so far this year coupled with the lack of inside depth.

Flashes fire a shot across the bow of the pre-season pundits with a dominating win at BG, 79-61.

If Kent State plays like that all conference slate they’ll have to be the favorites to win the conference.

Kent State looks really good, I think they are the favorites along with Akron right now.

Toledo is poo right now. Another year for the Northwest Ohio droughts to continue! Pick us both in last and maybe something will happen!

I just am hesitant on Akron, have to see them beat a good team before I can get on board with them.

IF BG isn't hitting their 3s, it an ugly night. Kent played really well and BG could not stop their offense.

If you're wanting to exclude Akron, what "good" teams does the MAC have? Kent? Tulane, Marshall, and UMass are all MAC caliber teams this year.

That is a good point, today's dominance over EMU was a statement game for them. Given what Akron has done against those teams combined with a sharp drop off at the top has certainly put Akron firmly in the top 4

RE: MAC play about to start, Who's No. 1 (or 2 or 3)
Below are the updated NET rankings. The number in parenthesis represents how much each team improved/declined since I posted on 12/31. A + means an improvement and a - means a decline.

Akron and Kent really distanced themselves from the rest of the MAC. I was surprised to see Ball St. fall 13 spots, meanwhile, Toledo jumped 13 despite Ball St. beating Toledo.

The MAC East still looks like the better division, namely because of Akron & Kent, but the gap between the two divisions has certainly shrunk.

51 - Akron (+23)
85 - Kent (+14)
132 - Ball St. (-13)
134 - Toledo (+13)
175 - Buffalo (-20)
178 - BGSU (-5)
197 - NIU (+14)
200 - CMU (+23)
214 - EMU (-4)
217 - Ohio (-38)
227 - Miami (-30)
239 - WMU (+12)

Figured I'd show the KenPom rankings as well. The order of the teams between this and the NET rankings is very similar. IMO I think the KenPom rankings appear to look a little more accurate. I say this because although I do think Akron and Kent are deserving of being labeled as the top 2 teams at the moment, I don't see the gap between them and the rest of the MAC being that large.

85 - Akron
96 - Kent
104 - Toledo
111 - Ball St.
136 - Buffalo
163 - BGSU
174 - NIU
190 - CMU
208 - Ohio
210 - EMU
220 - Miami
268 - WMU

Akron really has a chance to build a big conference lead and rise among the Kenpom Top 65, with their schedule. If the Zips can get past a road trip at NIU (1/14) it's tough seeing them losing before back-to-back games with UB/Kent to end the month.

Other than NIU, any other game that might be considered a challenge (Ball State, Toledo) will be an Akron home game, and that includes UB (1/28). A UB/Kent split should not be a negative while a sweep would likely lock up a 1-2 seed before February.

Every other early MAC contender (Toledo, Ball, Kent, Buffalo, BG) has a far tougher January sked than the Zips and will likely have at least two losses by Feb. 1. Indeed, Toledo, UB, BG already have one!!!

Akron has clearly established themselves as top 4 positioning, but in no way, shape , or form, do I think they have separated themselves from anyone. They still have to beat a top 4 MAC team to get that full respect imo. The MAC is one big pile of poo right now, the only team IMO that is top 100 worthy based on results on the court is Kent

Not proclaiming Akron as the best ... just saying the schedule sets up for the Zips to take advantage of their standing in the various metrics while other contenders have a tougher slate to deal with, early. Akron also has double crossovers with EMU/WMU which should be worth three wins at worst with single games vs. UT/BSU both at home. Only tricky road game is @ NIU. Can't ask for much better than that as a contender.

For comparison ... KSU plays BG, NIU, UB, Akron once and Toledo twice by the end of the month. Toledo sked just as tough, to name two.

Just saying if Zips can take advantage of their early schedule, it might be tough for another team to catch them for a 1-2 seed unless they fall flat vs. MAC East teams. At the same time Akron could possibly stay among Top 50 Kenpom or better as well.

Just something to think about ... Both Groce/Zips have enough pedigree to at least make this scenario plausible.

All I'm saying is, the Wagon Wheel looks to be a lot closer on the court than it was on the gridiron.

RE: MAC play about to start, Who's No. 1 (or 2 or 3)
Below are my picks for tonight. I'm going with all the home teams except I'm going to take Buffalo over Ball State.

WMU @ Akron
Toledo @ Kent
EMU @ Ohio
Buffalo @ Ball State
NIU @ CMU
Miami @ BGSU

RE: MAC play about to start, Who's No. 1 (or 2 or 3)
I was skeptical of all the metrics having Ball State so high as they lost to 5 mid-major opponents during OOC. That being said, they have looked good the first two games of MAC play. It should be a fun game when they come play @ Akron Friday.
