Very sad. The college football reporter died today, his 34th birthday, of pneumonia, apparently contracted around the time of the Ohio State - Michigan game he worked just 24 days ago.

What a cruel world.

Horrible and frightening! That has to be one nasty strain of pneumonia. I would classify it as a freakish event.

Awful. Terrible tragedy. Thoughts and prayers to his family and friends.

Reading many of the stories about him from friends and colleagues on Twitter. Sounds like the world lost a very talented, special and caring young man. Even more bizarre is that today was his birthday too.

RIP.

It's crazy that he was healthy less than a month ago. Just awful.

Seems like he got treatment fairly quickly I am surprised that the doctors could not save him.

pneumonia often can be a killer, More often it kills very young or old. Usually young adults along with Meds fight it off, but it happens more often than we would like to believe.

Yes but I wonder why? You would think that if it is bacterial and you're in the hospital they could just bombard it with antibiotics and that would kill it.

Every day is a gift, folks. And on this day, in particular, that is important to know.

Maybe his stay at the hospital killed him. People die from infections they get in the hospital or malpractice all the time, it’s actually quite common.

Odds are there was an underlying medical issue that complicated treatment, perhaps even an issue that had not been diagnosed.

It's usually that sort of thing when a young person dies from a treatable disease or infection.

Correct. It is my understanding this man also suffered from a lung condition, which would only make things more problematic for a patient like him. Pneumonia causes lung consolidation-- the air in the lungs become replaced by fluid (pus, water, blood) and sometimes solids. If you are already compromised, sometimes even a rigid course of antibiotics isn't enough to turn you around.

If you haven't already been tested for cancer, it's hard to know you have cancer. Tests also take a while to get results back in, most people assume it's quicker than it is in reality thanks to TV and movies - it sounds like it was a very rapid decline in a very advanced cancer, and that they initially thought it was just pneumonia (which he likely also had).

They probably knew a bit before she posted this to twitter for sure, but there's a chance they weren't able to properly diagnose this until after he had already died.

We had a situation like this happen to one of my county's medics. She went to the doc in a box on a Friday night with what she thought was a respiratory infection and was dead by Monday. It was determined in her autopsy that she had very advanced lymphoma. Up until the night she went to the ER she never showed any signs of the disease, and had just ran a half marathon the weekend before.

Anyone think Ed Aschoff was one of the very first coronavirus cases? I’m thinking he was very close to being patient zero in the US and the doctors had no way of knowing in December.

Other than proximity of time, what makes you believe this? What were his symptoms? Did he recently travel to China or knowingly come into contact with someone who had?

I thought he died from non-Hodgkins lymphoma.
