The Regional Conference
https://www.theringer.com/2019/12/20/210...university

Broderick and Wood must figure out a way to get it done. ODU, JMU, Marshall, App, UNCC, MT, WKU, UAB, Ga St, Coastal, GSU, FIU, FAU and most importantly ....... Liberty.

Soon enough, Liberty will resemble a P5 school in all that counts (ie budget). It’s the only path to be in a conference with a P5 without being in a P5.

RE: The Regional Conference
This is the number 1 issue for the entire athletic department. It’s not even close. It becomes more apparent every season. As players and parents become more knowledgeable, it’s impacting the recruiting more and more. Especially for ODU, which is on the furthest outskirts of CUSA. ODU to UTEP are further away than any conference affiliates in the entire country. This is a problem.

That has already happened. Liberty already had an FBS budget, eclipsing ODU and JMU in 2017.

Liberty's endowment is now $1.3 Billion, putting it in the top ten percent of all Colleges and Universities. That growth continues, making Liberty second in endowment growth of all Colleges and Universities, behind only Carnegie Mellon.
Their rapidly growing total assets have well surpassed Virginia Tech, and are very quickly approaching UVA.

Likely the G5 conference-with-Liberty ship sailed when CUSA and the SBC rejected their applications in 2017, especially after offering the SBC 24 million dollars, $22 million above the normal $2 million entrance fee, only to be rejected.
Liberty no longer needs a football conference.
Consider - the reasons for being in a G5 conference include:
CFB payout monies - Liberty does not need the money.
Scheduling - Liberty seems to be scheduling just fine.
Bowl consideration - Liberty made a bowl this year and won it.

My guess is that LU is trying to position itself for the end of the P5 GoRs (Conference Grants of Rights) in 2025/2026.
If Liberty does not land itself in a P5 Conference at that time, then look for Liberty to take the Notre Dame route. It already has it's own TV network, and almost unlimited resources.
Liberty will then be a de-facto P5 by it's own hand.

They need a basketball conference. Big South will not accommodate the growth they want there.

This... but it is impossible to have a regional conference with what's left given nobody is leaving the AAC. Even if we manage to cut the FUs loose, it is still far flung. It won't fix many of the problems. Only schools that help are JMU and Liberty.

Liberty is in the A-Sun now. LU is showing the way to success without being tied to a conference. CUSA passed on them when they offered 24 million (instead of 2) to join. That ship has sailed. Personally, Id love to see ODU football go independent if it meant the A10 for everything else. We get no exposure for CUSA football anyway. Very little money, and if you win 6 games you usually get a bowl game anyway as shown by LU this year.

True. Especially considering the inequity in the media payouts. Our best bet is that the AAC crumbles if/when Cincy, Memphis, Houston, Navy leave. ODU needs to be in a conference with ECU and Temple. Add in WKU, Marshall, UAB, MTSU, Charlotte, Liberty, App St, UMass and JMU. Id take GaSt too, but they may still want the belt. That gives you ECU, Marshall, App and JMU for football pedigree and Temple, ODU, WKU, UMass, UAB, MT for hoops credibility.

The Regional Conference
I'm indifferent to them as a place of higher education as I dont believe in a god. And despite how I feel about their leadership, to each their own. As an athletic partner yes they have the deep pockets and will to be the best at any cost so I say get em while you can before they're Notre Dame and leave us behind or they shutter, whichever comes first.

Not really
LU is a private institution not encumbered by by such things as state and federal guidelines as to application of funds, or the restrictions of the Cox Bill.
There are few other schools in the nation that have the virtually unlimited resources to follow the template drawn by the Flames, save for Notre Dame and BYU.
04-cheers

Indeed, what they offered the SBC was described as substantial but was undisclosed. It was CUSA that was offered the $24 million. I had the conferences reversed.

Agreed - there is a reason CUSA turned them down. They come with a ton of baggage and a heavy political tilt toward a certain individual. But, I agree, they do have deep pockets.

I mean, damn near every other school has a serious political bent, only in a different direction...screw diversity of thought, I guess, forget about universities being places where people share and debate all kinds of ideas, I guess. Wall that garden and make sure that anyone who strays from the officially sanctioned ideological standard is silenced. You don't have to agree with certain ideas to understand that this great nation was founded, and has prospered, under the idea that all ideas are worthy of being spoken, and debated, and debunked if they are ill founded.

“We will not tolerate intolerance!” (From a South Park episode.). It always amazes me how easily and loudly “enlightened” people spew hateful invectives against someone else they view as “unaccepting.” Merry Christmas to you folks. I hope you take a few minutes to actually ponder peace on earth and goodwill toward men.

At some point we have to be able to talk to one another without such hatred. You can’t have diversity without diversity of thought and opinion too. Please people, for the love of our great nation stop and think a moment before hating those that think differently from you. You might find that you have something in common. Most people are inherently good and kind. Be willing to find the goodness.

RE: The Regional Conference
The same people who preach tolerance fail time and again to realize they need to tolerate others opinions and come out yelling fascism, fearful sheep, intolerant yada yada. I don't care if you love liberty or the falwells for what ever reason. I just said i don't want to see ODU associated with some one like Liberty and the message board police came out in full force to preach tolerance. Again they have money, they have a plan to improve their athletics with that money so good for them. I just don't want ODU to be associated with them in anyway is all i am saying. Party on with the Liberty Love. Merry Christmas fellas.
