I don't love Liberty or the Falwells. I am not a fan of a lot of the things they do or say, to be honest. I also am not a fan of things that Cal Berkeley, Harvard, and many other universities do. But I wouldn't let loose an explative laced tirade at the very thought of ODU being associated with them. The sooner we can respect the fact that different folks may have different ways of going about life, the sooner we can have real diversity and tolerance in this country.

I don’t buy it. For starters, a lot of well established athletic programs aren’t considered P5 and won’t be until they get an invite from a P5 conference.

BYU is the closest analogue to Liberty but it’s much further along. Even so, BYU isn’t considered a P5 program where it counts the most (media and bowl deals). Norte Dame is the only independent to meet that standard. Liberty is planets away from it. It certainly won’t get there in the next few years.

When it comes to P5, it really is about the company you keep. If Liberty was that kind of attractive, the Flames be in an FBS conference and the rest of their sports would be in something better than the Atlantic Sun.

Whatever rows your boat i guess. Again i am not tolerant so don't go preaching that crap to me. Looks like we have too many ODU faithful excited to be in company with liberty. If it is true so be it.

Agreed - there is a reason CUSA turned them down. They come with a ton of baggage and a heavy political tilt toward a certain individual. But, I agree, they do have deep pockets.
I mean, damn near every other school has a serious political bent, only in a different direction...screw diversity of thought, I guess, forget about universities being places where people share and debate all kinds of ideas, I guess. Wall that garden and make sure that anyone who strays from the officially sanctioned ideological standard is silenced. You don't have to agree with certain ideas to understand that this great nation was founded, and has prospered, under the idea that all ideas are worthy of being spoken, and debated, and debunked if they are ill founded.

I didn’t want to unpack their baggage, but let’s unpack one box and go to Jerry Falwell Jr’s twitter - the nepotistic president of the university. His support of a particular candidate is unique and troubling - as are some of the university’s past dealings. But those are boxes I’m not going to unpack.

Liberty is not a garden I’m trying to wall off. I’m all for diversity of thought and cogent discussion.

Broderick and Wood must figure out a way to get it done. ODU, JMU, Marshall, App, UNCC, MT, WKU, UAB, Ga St, Coastal, GSU, FIU, FAU and most importantly ....... Liberty.

Soon enough, Liberty will resemble a P5 school in all that counts (ie budget). It’s the only path to be in a conference with a P5 without being in a P5.

I created this post to spur some discussion on the unique and rare opportunities that could present themselves by being affiliated with Liberty. Add to that the emotionally competitive environment (aka the CAA at its peak) that a regional conference can create, I just think it’s our best route if our leaders have the ability to get it done.

Didn't want to start a thread for this, just felt like pointing out that since we beat Eastern Michigan in 2016 bpwl game, they have been to a bowl game every year since and are curretly playing Pitt.

Man, talk about a tale of two different programs! They are historically a very weak program in a lousy stadium next door to a BIG school. They get zero publicity, and yet here they are, significantly ahead of us ( for the time being)

Liberty doesn't share or debate anything. It is as closed off as any institution can be. Be a conservative evangelical or don't come.

Are you still talking about Liberty? Their stadium is way better than ours and they are more well known too. Maybe for controversial stuff sometimes, but it’s still publicity. And you can’t ask for a more engaged student body. The kids that go there have bought in and believe in building the “Protestant Notre Dame”. Too bad it seems ODU has given up on being a VT on the coast. Being in a conference w LU would be fine. It’s just sports. They won’t convert you if you don’t want to be.

Not given up, but instead the Cox legislation made any thought of that virtually impossible before it could get any traction.
Not discussed, but just as problematic is how the Cox Bill negatively affects our ability to provide competitive compensation for MBB as well.

I like Liberty. If CUSA had to choose a replacement for ODU, Liberty should be chosen over a Sun Belt school.

Yes, it's FCS, but if ODU wants to land in an eastern conference, this is as real as it's going to get.

I know there are posters on here that really would like to see ODU competing on this level but count me in with the many donors that post less and stay offline who interested in something that could be more program-respected over time. After watching La Tech completely zero out a P5 offense last night in a bowl game (meaningless to some here or not), I'm still on board with ODU needs to step up and compete harder to win like La Tech is and several others are CUSA.

To think that after all the fundraising over the years that ODU would end up in a league like the list above would make me barf. It would affect my athletics giving for sure.

We should disband ODU athletics and fund the education/research side rather than being in that conference.

That is like saying I don't want ODU to be associated with UVA due to their left wing ideology.

As for endowments, check out Harvard, Yale and the Ivy league. They just don't spend their money on sports. If Harvard decided to go to big time football, they would be able to compete at the P5 level.
