RE: CAA play men's basketball 2020
What we need is a commissoner, AD's and university presidents to get their heads out of their arses and think outside the box. The current setup is BAD for multiple reasons. The CAA is going BACKWARDS as a whole and JMU fans are looking to get out.

Two divisions to create better rivalries and better travel.

Home games for the top teams in the CAA tournery.

Better TV contract.

The A10 is not a good fit and frankly UNCW basketball cannot compete at that level most of the time.

Football isn't going to happen, and nor should it.

The Big South is our only shot and that door likely closed for the time being the moment they added NC A&T.

UNCW should try to beg their way into the SoCon. I agree with not having football but they do have a non football school-UNCG. Tells me it is possible but not easy.

College of Charleston would kill our admin. We wanted them out of the SoCon and in the CAA and worked hard to make it happen. Can't bail on them now.

None of the CAA schools have a brand big enough to have die hard fans that never attended the school. Because of that we will NEVER have great attendance unless some schools build that type of brand.

Us, W&M and Charleston have fans who show up with numbers at the CAA Tournament. It just so happened that all 3 schools exited early this tournament, which is not typical.

In 2017, when UNCW faced Charleston in the final, the attendance was listed at 4,708.

Hell, even when we faced Hofstra the season before in the final, it was a pretty solid 3,031.

3K in a 10K plus arena looks terrible on TV.

CAA was smart to go small arena. I could live with home court tournament like the Big South does since our footprint is so big.

But the CBS deal has us playing on Monday's and Tuesdays for the forseeable future so nothing will change.

We should join the SoCon as a package and put that league at 12 teams total, 9 with football. Would be just like the old setup they had when Davidson and Charleston were there.

That's how business works and this has to be a business decision for UNCW. The CAA is a dead end conference and pumping more money into it is not going to fix it. Mid majors have to pay attention to the overall landscape in todays college sports and if they don't they will be screwed. Football just makes no sense financially for most schools and especially for start up programs. The money for a UNCW is men's basketball and baseball to a lesser degree. Being in the CAA has made no sense for quite a while. COC is a decent rival for UNCW but only because they are close enough so that fans identify with them. If COC left the SoCon based on what UNCW wanted-they have terrible leadership.

That would be an admission of a mistake. CofC should have stayed and UNCW should have left the CAA and joined them. We did the opposite. Costly error. Elon just left the SoCon as well.

I'd prefer we kept the Elon/UNCW/CofC thing together and worked to improve the CAA. CAA schools are much more like UNCW than SoCon schools overall.

The CAA southern 5 fit pretty well together.

The CAA northern 5 fit pretty well together

The problem is they dont fit together as a 10 team league

There are no easy solutions.

The best is for the CAA to realize the messed up and build towards an 12 or even 14 team league with divisions that interact as little as possible outside of sharing an automatic bid

Need to start with replacing the commissioner with a commish with some cojones. We got more exposure in one day on CBS sports than we got on Flo sports all season.

We definitely need a different media deal if we want anything to ever happen. Our visibility is awful. NBC Sports was better than CBS Sports. Now FLO. We have gone the wrong direction at each stage.

Glad to see Hofstra take the tournament. When I was at the tournamet in Baltimore they had good fan support and really likeable supporters. First time since 2001 for the Pride and I think they have the players to get a first round W.

All it would take is ONE University President/Chancellor or AD with vision and leadership skills to change the direction of things. Check out what Dave Gavitt was able to do with the Big East back in the day.

There is no reason to think the CAA suddenly changes how they do things. UNCW can and should change.

Unless something has changed, SoCon will not take in any more schools without football.

Start the conversation with please and end it with please take us ! We are open to anything including a football research committee. The chancellor is a good business man and he has to know the CAA is a zero on the inventory.

We just spent three years quickly making our way to the bottom of the conference and staying there. Only way to get other conferences to think we are an appealing add is to win and win consistently. 82 pointed out in another thread the importance of continuity. This is another reason for that. Show competence in the ability to win consistently. Sure, UNCW historically has show the quality of our program but can we show that consistently without all the 5-10 year breaks where if we aren't winning the conference we're in darn near last place.

Maybe if we can do something like that, the SOCON or the A10 wouldn't laugh us out of the office and at least consider it. Until then... we're stuck in this dying conference thanks to previous poor decisions.
