We'll see. I think Shaver would have been doing just as well or better at this point in the season had they retained him. After all, several key pieces left after they fired Shaver. They might have done even better in non-conference play with Shaver still around.

I think Shaver's projected '19-'20 squad would've beaten St Joes, StF, and maybe Oklahoma but I'm not sure we'd be 4-0 in league play, especially vs the top 3 preseason teams. We'll see how well Dane and his staff recruit. Right now, we don't have a single big for next season...suspect we'll have to grab a 5th yr kid.

Pure speculation. Shaver managed to fail with some pretty good teams.

16 years as head coach. ZERO CAA championhips. 226-268 record. 124-162 conference. Great offenses, horrible defenses that never got better regardless of roster. He had one good 3 year run with 20 win seasons each year from 2013-2015 and couldn't close the deal, then fell back to 4th place finishes in the CAA. Defense wins, he never could produce a team that played defense. End of story. Going back 10 years, the best defense he had was #5. Most were bottom 3 to last.

Drexel is destroying W&M, 74-54 with 3:55 left. It's Drexel's Homecoming.

The Tribe are headed for their first CAA loss. Meanwhile the Dragons will improve to 5-2.

On a winning three by Jacob Cushing, who scored 32 this season before today.

Edit: http://warrennolan.com/basketball/2020/c...l-Athletic has predicted standings that have the 7 seed, who doesn't get a bye, closer to the 1 seed than to the 8 seed! Imagine a 7-10 game between a 10-8 team who lost a three-way tiebreaker and a 1-17 team! It predicts:

W&M 15-3
Charleston, Hofstra, and Northeastern 13-5
Delaware, Drexel, and Towson 10-8
JMU 4-14
Elon and UNCW 1-17

If those records happen, it means you beat Elon, and neither of you beats anyone else, so they could have to use the NET as the tiebreaker for the 9 and 10 seeds.

Edit Again: Those predicted standings could have been a jinx in your favor.

Congratulations to Coach Burke, his assistants, and his players for their game plans and execution last week. An amazing turn around. Hoping for continued success.

Just to keep things in perspective concerning Coach Shaver, I'm copying part of a "NJ Alum" post that summarizes Coach Shaver's results.
""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""
Over the last five years, W&M owns 96 overall victories, including 54 in CAA play. Both totals are tops in the CAA. The Tribe notched three-straight 20-win seasons in 2013-14, 2014-15 and 2015-16, marking just the second streak of three years in program history. The Green and Gold captured the CAA regular season Championship in 2015. Twice, Shaver led the program to berths in the National Invitation Tournament (NIT), only the second and third post season bids in program history.

In his 32 years as a collegiate head coach, he ranks among the active leaders in victories in college basketball. Over his career, Shaver-coached teams have won 20 or more games during 16 seasons and advanced to the post season on 13 occasions. Shaver enters 2018-19 ranked 18th among active Division I head coaches with 570 career victories. He became the 86th Division I head coach to win 500 games in 2014. His career win total ranks 63rd all-time among head coach with at least 10 years of Division I experience.

Under Shaver, the Tribe has peaked at the right time of year during the conference tournament. Prior to his arrival in 2004, W&M had just two CAA Tournament wins in 18 years as a member of the league. During Shaver’s 15 seasons, the Tribe owns 14 CAA Tournament victories and the program’s first four championship game appearances. In fact, since 2008, W&M leads all CAA programs with 13 league tournament victories. The Tribe has earned a spot in the CAA Semifinals each of the last five years, a first in W&M history.
**************************************************

Whether or not Coach Shaver is a fit at UNCW, the man is a class act and an accomplished professional.

RE: CAA play men's basketball 2020
So right now, we are one of three teams with 1 win and Delaware has four and Towson/Delaware/NU/Derexel have five wins. We would need to take the spot of a five win team to get the spot in the coveted sixth place position. We would have to go on an absolute tear and one of those four teams would have to fall apart. We'd also have to get into a position of winning any tie breakers. The only one of those four teams we've beaten is NU, so we'd really have to beat the other three on the backside to even have a chance.

We really need to beat CofC to get this ball rolling and get to 2-7. We then face Towson, JMU and Elon, so a good chance to get on a winning streak. If we ran the table there, we'd be 5-7. A tall task, but that's what needs to happen to meet this goal. We'd only have six games left facing the top of the conference and we'd have to beat Delaware and Drexel to stay even on the tie breaker. Basically, we have to win 6 of our remaining ten games to even have a chance, and a win over William and Mary would be great. That record would probably get us to that sixth spot and would probably seal the deal for Burke to be our next coach.

Three really bad teams have created a big divide that will be hard for any of them to overcome, including us. Been a long time since we've had three teams go through the first half of CAA play with only one win.

Okay y'all, I'm going to put out my picks against the spread today ( I don't bet anymore due to my beliefs). I'm 8-8 for the year thus far but just started last week (luck, I guess).

Delaware +7 over NE
Elon -1 over JMU
UNCW +13.5 over C of C
Hofstra-8 over Drexel
Tribe-5.5 over Towson
Ga. Tech-1 over NC State.

Fun to speculate about the outcomes!

Northeastern blows another 16 point 2nd half lead. Delaware goes 2-0 on the northern road trip... which is something I didn't see coming.

RE: CAA play men's basketball 2020
With Delaware's win on the road at Northeastern today, the conference is assured of having 7 teams with winning conference records in the first half of the season. Hard to imagine any way that it takes less than 8 wins to get into the top 6 now. It is entirely possible that .500 conference record team might end up in the 7 slot. Didn't the Hawks get the 6 slot one year with a losing record recently? I think that was the year you guys beat Hofstra in the quarters. Definitely a weird year so far. Northeastern has 3 home losses already. Delaware won both northern games this week, and Towson is on a roll. Good luck today against Charleston.
