For the past 7 years, I have got excited when we offer a quality player, only to see them go to a lower school. It is at this time when our coaching staff goes crazy and will take anybody that says yes. Wood is the author of hiring JJ and staff. Both must go, unless we are satisfied playing weak teams and keeping a status que! In fairness to JJ, recruiting coaches may tell their recruits that JJ has health problems and his temper is out of sight.
At the time ...JJ was exactly he right hire to make. But today we have enough REAL data that says it is time to let someone else see where they can take the program.
I’m not against hiring a new b-ball coach. I think it’s a good job but not a great job. ODU has a huge fundamental issue that can’t be corrected by coaching, unfortunately. Maybe a new coach helps in the short term. But make no mistake, there is a long term fundamental problem. Sorry to beat a dead horse, but it’s true. And even if we hit a great “home run” with a young up and coming coach, Dude is gonna jump at the first chance to get to a real conference. Charter flights across country to play conference games is gonna get old real quick.
I can't wait til we are good enough to have someone steal our coach for a sport that someone cares about.

It will probably happen in women’s basketball the rate she’s going.
I know if we hire a young and upcoming assistant from a P5 school, he will be gone on 3-4 years but at least he will have good assistants around him. They could take over like VCU has done with their assistant coaches. The key is building a foundation so we will have good players for a new coach or assistant. Recruitment is the name of the game.

I agree, assuming the new hire is successful of course.

Just one problem with this topic. We aren’t hiring a new coach for years, Jones had his contract extended last year. Waste of bandwidth folks!!

We haven’t had someone steal our basketball coach in the last 25 years. That’s not the best track record. If BT had stayed sober someone would have made a run for him, but otherwise we’ve had coaches no one else wanted apparently.

Yes I know. Wood got carried away with 20 win seasons (puff cakes) and gave JJ not only a raise (which is okay) but an extension to his contract, which was not okay. If we were in the A10, I would have no problem. Nobody is looking at any of our coaches, for a head coaching job. They are looking for young coaches who are on the rise, or P5 assistants. We had one in Keates, but Wood liked a senior coach in JJ.

Pretty sure Oliver Purnell bailed after 2-3 years to go to Dayton

Which was approximately 25 years ago. Close enough to give him a pass on that one.

Wasn’t BT in the running for Utah and Wyoming at times? Maybe another Western school?

Maybe Dickens was visited by three ghosts last week and is changing his tune.
(yeah yeah yeah, Dickens wrote it, Scrooge experienced it, just let me have this)

we don't have a coach that can recruit! JJ looks for players that nobody else wants that will follow his beckoned command.

1994, I remember it well. That hurt. An ODU legend who appeared to be taking us to new heights. Not only left, but left for Dayton. I realize they paid him quite a bit more, but still. That sucked.
